Just heard from someone else familiar with this issue. Honda and other Jap car makers (and apparently American car makers as well) are now using vegetable oil based material for the hoses in their cars, so essentially they're putting a food source for rodents in their cars. The most recent report I got was a guy showing me how rodents had recently chewed up the hoses in his late model GM diesel pickup (it had sat in one spot not more than a handful of days). He also advised me that a judge just throw out a class action suit against Honda for this. This fellow found a cyan pepper tape used to wrap these vulnerable lines which he as now applied to the vulnerable lines under the hood of his truck.

Ford also uses soy rather than petroleum for wire insulation.

A friend of mine just sent her Focus over to the dealer to get the rat-chewed wiring repaired. They live in a critter-filled area and let the car sit for a couple of weeks... insurance is covering it. She asked me if I wanted to replace the wiring harness for her... LOL... NO.

After having a mouse die up under the dash of my Jeep, I now periodically splash a few drops of peppermint oil in the cabs of my vehicles to keep rodents out. I know they will eat dried chili peppers like it's going out of style, so I have my doubts about pepper deterrents. Maybe mothballs under the hood.

Mothballs are very corrosive. If mint works stick with it.
