I had a rental car after my my car was in the body shop from being re-ended by someone who wasn't paying attention. On the way home from the rental place I ended up getting a flat tire. I called the rental company, they said they could have someone come out in a couple of hours. I asked the woman on the phone, is it alright if I just change the tire and put the spare on and return the car for a different one? She got silent for a couple seconds, and says I never had anyone ask that before. Then she asks if I know how to change a tire. I laugh, and say yes I know how to change a tire, I'll bring the car back in a half hour.
Half hour later I show up back at the rental place, drop of the keys to exchange it for a different rental, and the guy (early 20's) said not many people know how to change a tire anymore.
I said sadly you are correct, personal responsibility and the ability to solve problems is severely lacking in todays population.

I'm very surprised you were not told changing your own tire was a violation of corporate policy, and would incur a "damage" fee" if you did it anyway.

I figured that is what they would tell me, and why I asked if I could change it before I did. :)
