Hinesburg, Vt - Students at Champlain Valley Union High School area are now flying a Black Lives Matter flag. It’s something the school’s Racial Alliance Committee has been pushing for, for the past two years.
"We wanted to bring race to our school's consciousness,” said Prince Yodishembo, a senior at CVU. “Race was something we never touched on in class, it just didn't seem important."
Yodishembo and his peers created the Racial Alliance Committee. The group has been pushing for permission to fly the flag by presenting at school board meetings and garnering hundreds of signatures in support.
"The raising of this flag means not only am I seen but I am heard," one student told the crowd.
Students say it’s already fostered more inclusiveness and equity.
"Raising this flag and the process to raising this flag has brought forward so much conversation, so much learning, and so much progress for our entire school regarding the matter of race,” Yodishembo said.
Students say this is just the beginning and hope other students feel empowered to make change.
"Keep talking, keep learning, keep asking questions, even when it's most uncomfortable."
The flag will fly at CVU for the next 30 days.
