Necessities is a very subjective term
You can eat for the month a family of four for less than 100 dollars if you catch a halfway decent sale at the supermarket
Not alot of frills but all that is required is meat, rice and vegetables
You only need 2 pairs of Jean's
You biggest expense should be keeping your car on the road

Necessities is a very subjective term
True this, I remember reading some celebrity (Gweneth Paltrow I think), who took the average weekly food stamp money and tried to show the world how impossible it was to buy the necessities. Of course, her shopping cart was filled with organic (higher cost) produce, pre-cooked protein dishes, and a variety of exotic spices and garnishes. No wonder they couldn't feed themselves for a week like that. Someone pointed out that the same amount of money could be used to buy whole raw chickens which you process yourself, a sack of beans, a sack of rice, a loaf of bread and peanut butter, and you can eat for a week easy.
