An internet feud between pro-Trump conservative Charlie Kirk and far-right white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes has moved from Twitter onto the main stage.

The reason for the dispute, according to white nationalists, is that Kirk’s conservative organization, Turning Point USA (TP USA), has weak positions on what far-right white nationalists consider to be true conservatism.

It’s a schism among young right-wingers that reveal the ideological fault lines within Trump’s Republican party.

During an episode of America First this week, white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes instructed his followers on how to troll conservatives at speaking events.

Followers of a 21-year-old white nationalist have been trolling Republicans at speaking events for three weeks after rallying together through the charismatic leader’s popular YouTube channel, podcast and presence on other corners of the Internet.

As a result of Big If True’s reporting, Apple Podcasts has removed Nicholas Fuentes’ show, America First, and Reddit banned a group (https://www.reddit.com/r/AFwithNJF/) devoted to Fuentes and the show. Fuentes is a Holocaust denier who claims to support Christian values, while promoting fervently racist and homophobic views.

For an idea of where Fuentes lies on the political spectrum, look no further than an episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeF-BnvzpOM) of his show from this week, where he described fellow white nationalist Richard Spencer as “essentially a liberal.”

In response to a request for comment, a member of the press team for Google, YouTube’s parent company, asked for a URL of the video mentioned earlier so they could “look into” it. Google didn’t respond to several additional follow-up emails seeking comment, and his show is still available on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsJ86N5n7fcEC_Ds8dYJKzA)

Apple, which distributes Fuentes’ show through Apple Podcasts, didn’t respond to several emails seeking comment on why the show is appropriate for the platform. As of Friday, the show was no longer available on Apple Podcasts.

New terms, same message

Fuentes’ online following has grown since June, when The Daily Dot reported (https://www.dailydot.com/layer8/white-nationalist-youtube-war-maga-star/) that he had 44,000 Twitter followers. Now he has about 63,300.

Fuentes’ supporters call themselves Nickers and Groypers, a term that originated in 2015 (https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/groyper) on 4chan and is connected to the Pepe the Frog meme appropriated by white nationalists (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/08/pepe-the-frog-creator-kills-off-internet-meme-co-opted-by-white-supremacists) in recent years.

Reddit banned a group (https://www.reddit.com/r/NickerNation) called Nicker Nation for posting violent content in August, the same month when a subreddit called AFwithNJF (https://www.reddit.com/r/AFwithNJF/)(America First with Nicholas J. Fuentes) appeared on the site.

On Thursday, Big If True requested an interview with Reddit on whether or not the subreddit meets the site’s community standards, as well as clarification on Reddit’s policies on white supremacist content.

Reddit did not respond to that email or others seeking comment, but by Friday, AFwithNJF was also banned.

According to the site, the subreddit broke a rule barring groups from “creating or repurposing a sub to reconstitute or serve the same objective as a previously banned or quarantined subreddit.”

IRL trolling

For about three weeks, Fuentes has encouraged his followers to attend speaking events for Republicans they’ve labeled “Conservative Inc.,” and invade question-and-answer sessions with comments that are absurd, confrontational, racist, anti-Semitic and anti-LGBT.

These performances, dubbed the “Groyper Wars,” have received support from other white nationalists, like Patrick Casey of Identity Evropa and Andrew Anglin, who wrote in The Daily Stormer, (https://dailystormer.name/groyper-war-battle-of-osu-bloodbath-as-groypers-commit-brutal-war-crimes-against-charlie-kirk/)“All of the energy from 2015-16 is coming back around to us, as we are once again at war with the conservative establishment.”

During an event (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFNrrrK0i5I) with Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk and conservative Rob Smith, a handful of Fuentes supporters, including Casey, asked a series of racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic questions. One commenter told Kirk to Google “dancing Israelis,” a reference to an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

Fuentes uses his show as a call to action. During an episode first streamed on Monday, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeF-BnvzpOM)Fuentes spoke for a solid two and a half hours, pausing once, only briefly, to try to remember the name of a Kanye West song.

During the episode, which also appeared on Apple Podcasts, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/groyper-wars-weekend-leaks-and-the-dan-crenshaw-setup/id1455274246?i=1000456044201)Fuentes urged his audience to attend events for Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), Kirk, conservative writer Matt Walsh and others. The host described the approach as “a sincere inquiry into Conservative Inc. and their ruling principles.”

The episode was partly an instructional video on what to ask, how to ask it and how to handle responses at these events. He encouraged his followers to stream the incidents online, to cause a scene if they are not allowed to attend or ask questions, and to refuse to move if asked.

“Make them bring the police over,” Fuentes said. “Make them bring a security person over.”

Fuentes has particular enthusiasm for targeting Kirk, who he claimed wasn’t conservative, patriotic or Christian. He criticized Kirk’s views on immigration and the LGBT community, and later suggested, with no evidence whatsoever, that Turning Point covered up a sexual scandal and supports pedophilia.
During the episode, Fuentes expressed racist and anti-Semitic ideas, with a peppering of gay slurs.

Casey, Fuentes and others have also criticized Turning Point USA for firing “brand ambassador” Ashley St. Clair (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/turning-point-usa-brand-ambassador-dumped-after-photo-with-white-nationalists-and-anti-semites) for taking a group photo with Fuentes.

Splinter from Spencer and alt-right white nationalism

Fuentes’ views are a mass of contradictions. Although he claims to be of Mexican descent, he is fervently against immigration and anyone who isn’t white. A Catholic, Fuentes considers his movement a Christian one, yet he continuously espouses views that directly contradict the tenets of the religion.

While attending high school in La Grange Park, a Chicago suburb, Fuentes participated in speech, model UN and started his first show, (https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/western-springs/ct-dlg-lt-grad-death-threats-tl-0824-20170818-story.html) which aired a handful of times at Lyons Township High School.

While attending Boston University, Fuentes started a show on the Right Side Broadcasting Network, a pro-Trump media company. In 2017, he used the platform to call for CNN employees (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/nick-fuentes-kill-globalists-at-cnn_n_58fe7e95e4b00fa7de16ed9e) to be deported or hanged, in addition to sharing anti-Muslim comments. His show eventually left the Right Side network, migrating to YouTube and Apple Podcasts.

Fuentes attended the Unite the Right rally, a gathering of white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017. The event ended with the death of Heather Heyer and dozens of injuries after a Nazi sympathizer drove a car into a crowd of counter-protesters.

He left Boston University and returned to La Grange Park, according to The Chicago Tribune. This week, far-right figure Milo Yiannopoulos posted audio of Spencer making hostile, racist and anti-Semitic comments after the rally. In response to the tape, Fuentes claimed Spencer hates Christianity and the United States, is irrelevant, toxic and “essentially a liberal.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeF-BnvzpOM)

William Nardi, a New York-based conservative writer for National Review, encountered Fuentes while attending college at nearby University of Massachusetts in Boston. In a piece for Vice (https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/d3wkvj/college-conservativism-and-the-alt-right) last year, Nardi mentioned a leaked video from 2017 that showed Fuentes making racist comments about interracial relationships. Instead of slowing Fuentes, the video caused his following to quadruple, Nardi wrote.

Nardi, who compared Fuentes’ charismatic personality to that of Adolf Hitler, told Big If True he believes Fuentes “should be de-platformed in every possible way,” including removal from YouTube.

“What Nick Fuentes is trying to do with the Groyper Wars … is he’s trying to pull Turning Point USA into what he thinks is a more authentic direction for conservatism, which is getting to racism and just bigotry in general,” Nardi said. “And then the crazy thing is the gaslighting that he does to try and make it sound like these ideas that he’s accepted so vigorously are not racist or they’re not inherently anti-Semitic.”

Over the past month, the far-Right’s troll culture turned against Conservatism, Inc., by haranguing the establishment’s “youth outreach” guy, Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA (TPUSA). TPUSA is a large and well-funded youth movement, but it is starting to lose its audience because many are asking what exactly TPUSA aims to conserve?
The answers they are getting are unclear.



Although Kirk makes some modest concessions to the nationalist Right in his essay (https://amgreatness.com/2019/11/21/clearing-the-air-on-the-right/), for the most part he has been pushing the old and failed conservative strategy (https://amgreatness.com/2018/03/20/pennsylvania-and-populism-lessons-missed/) of sticking to “free-market principles,” while being “liberal on social issues.” This is why he confuses conservatism, which is really a disposition and set of instincts, with a laundry list of positions that he labels “dogma.”


While decrying identity politics, he and his guests have often pursued a type of conservative identity politics, which aims to reach out to minorities in explicitly racial terms (https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/10/06/trump-black-young-conservatives-summit-229435). At the same time, Kirk and TPUSA deny the legitimacy of any form of white American identity.

While TPUSA’s signature event this year is called Culture War (https://www.tpusa.com/culturewar/), it aims not so much to fight one as to have those on the Right surrender to the dominant leftist culture. Kirk suggests his critics from the nationalist Right are engaging in purity tests, but has little bad to say about the losing conservatism that prevailed before Trump came on the scene—the “conservatism” of the proposed Bush amnesty and National Review’s defenses of transgenderism (https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/05/transgenderism-compromise-necessary-to-preserve-social-order/) and same-sex marriage (https://www.nationalreview.com/2015/05/yes-same-sex-marriage-about-equality-courts-should-not-decide/). His article projects weak energy and carries with it a tone of resignation to the forces to his Right, rather than suggesting that he is its vanguard.

TPUSA’s Fake Culture War

Unlike Pat Buchanan, whose invocation of a culture war in 1992 (https://voicesofdemocracy.umd.edu/buchanan-culture-war-speech-speech-text/) was powerful, genuine, and ahead of its time, Charlie Kirk appears AWOL on the culture war. Young conservatives can be forgiven if they believe that for him, it’s just a marketing gimmick. Doing so no doubt will cross the Chamber of Commerce and may invite fresh smears from the SPLC, but why should they get to set the terms of respectability?


Instead of rejecting the Left and striking a blow for a right-wing counterculture, Kirk has used much of his time on stage to attack critics to his right using the patois of the Left. He has spent much time and in many venues going after those he considers bigoted, racist, and anti-semitic. He has mocked them as loser basement dwellers, as if such ill fortunes are not due, at least in part, from obstacles like the H1B visa program, affirmative action, or declining social capital in a land of increasing diversity (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-9477.2007.00176.x). It is telling that he reaches for words popular on the Left like “xenophobia” and “racism,” seemingly unaware of how they have lost their punch, as they’re invoked so promiscuously to silence anyone to the right of Paul Ryan.

For many years, the Republican Party and the official organs of conservatism have channeled their supporters’ energy into policies that work chiefly to increase the wealth of corporations and the donor class. This was the “established dogma of the Bush-McCain-Romney years,” including low taxes, high immigration, and indifference to off-shoring. Not only are these policies destructive of family life and stable communities, but corporations have not returned the favor, instead becoming eager enforcers of leftism (https://www.newgeography.com/content/006354-the-dangerous-rise-of-the-woke-corporation) through draconian HR departments (https://www.hrdive.com/news/google-fires-engineer-who-criticized-tech-giants-politically-correct-mono/448866/) and widespread censorship (https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-ceo-zuckerberg-says-hate-speech-stumps-ai-2018-4) in social media. Fighting a culture war means distinguishing between friends and enemies. In the realm of politics, it means exposing the areas of bipartisan consensus—on trade, on immigration (https://twitter.com/ColumbiaBugle/status/1186894812353462272?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5 Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1186894812353462272&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.informationliberation.co m%2F%3Fid%3D60851), on social issues (https://twitter.com/Zoomer_mite/status/1187179437453742081), and even sometimes on Israel (https://www.informationliberation.com/?id=60851), for that matter—as often inimical to the interests of the American people.

The Right’s Netroots

Things have not been going according to plan. Instead of facing blue-haired Antifa weirdos, Kirk is finding that increasingly he is being harassed by an army of “Groypers (https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/groyper).” A variation of Pepe the Frog and the Clown, the Groyper avatars are ubiquitous among young right-wing activists on Twitter. Belying the myth they’re losers stuck in mom’s basement, these mostly well-spoken young men have shown up at TPUSA events “irl (https://www.grammarly.com/blog/irl-meaning/),” asking tough questions of Kirk about changing demographics, the nature of America’s relationship with Israel, and whether surrendering to the LGBTQ+ agenda actually advances the Right in the culture war.


Kirk and TPUSA’s frustration is clearly rising. America First activist Nicholas Fuentes has now been banned (https://71republic.com/2019/10/29/charlie-kirk-fuentes/) from Culture War events—ostensibly for being disruptive, but mostly because he is the self-proclaimed leader of the far-right troll army. I doubt this conflation of this movement with one man reflects reality. The dissident Right is dispersed, and their rejection of Conservatism, Inc. is spontaneous. Focusing on one very young man with an outsized internet presence and who is, thereby, bound to make some rhetorical missteps as the symbol or “leader” of right wing nationalism is just a means of discrediting it, by allowing critics to focus on unfortunate things a single person might have said years ago. The ideas animating the movement, not the individual personalities, are what really matter.

Kirk and his guests have often responded to questioners the way the Left usually does: with sputtering and ad hominem insults (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/11/1/1896408/-Alt-right-trolls-make-life-miserable-for-Charlie-Kirk-and-his-Turning-Point-USA-Culture-War-tour). This is just weak. Groypers have not been rioting or even heckling at TPUSA’s events; rather, a slew of pointed questions have exposed TPUSA as purveyors of the same thin gruel cooked up by Conservatism, Inc.

Trump’s election did not dissipate the meme army of 2016, which even now Kirk does not really understand. He, and many others in the Republican establishment, just wanted a good establishment conservative, like Cruz or Rubio. The civil war within the Republican Party was a rejection of that form of “good conservative,” not least because of their penchant for foreign wars and their hand-in-glove relationship with big business and woke capital.

Since Trump’s victory, Kirk and others in Conservatism, Inc. have made formal peace with Trump and his nationalist core supporters, but their words and actions show a long-term goal of redirecting their energy into approved directions, just as the Tea Party was co-opted and defanged (https://www.columbian.com/news/2011/oct/25/letter-tea-party-message-was-co-opted/).

These young right-wingers are still angry, energetic, irreverent, and alienated. Admittedly, they’re also disorganized, diverse, and a little dangerous in their views. This comes not least from their youth but also because they’re autodidacts, seeking answers to forbidden questions where answers can only be found in old books and various anonymous corners of the internet. They’re as likely to take their cue from Russell Kirk as from Alex Jones.

They would benefit from a genuine liberal education and an introduction to the grand tradition of conservative thought (https://amgreatness.com/2018/11/20/the-radicalism-of-conservatism-inc/), of course, but so would Kirk himself. Conservatism is not a checklist (https://amgreatness.com/2016/10/04/checklist-conservatism-failed-america/) of particular positions, an “established dogma” or set of “doctrines.” It is a disposition, a love of what already is, and is in danger of being lost.

The Left depends on indoctrination and is threatened by genuine critical thinking. It requires a great deal of propaganda because it goes against our nature, including the love of our own people and the familiar. Conservatism, Inc. masquerades as an intellectual movement to give voice to conservative sentiments. But it has turned out to be just as unthinking, beholden to its donors, and comfortable with censorship and the destruction of traditional life as the Left which, supposedly, it is opposing.

To be clear, I don’t endorse everything Kirk’s critics say, nor do I always approve of how they say it. Nor do I doubt he is a Trump supporter (when it’s safe and useful to be one). But support for Trump the man should be secondary, far secondary, to supporting what Trump represented: a break with the “doctrines” of Conservatism, Inc.

Trump’s earlier supporters recognized that the Left and Conservatism, Inc. functioned together to narrow the range of acceptable discourse, to secure the Left’s victories of yesteryear, and to habituate conservative voters into accepting that their job is to lose.

A Taste of Victory

Nothing impresses the mind like success. The 2016 election was a time of unbridled energy. Instead of “losing with honor,” the Right finally won. The victory came not from embracing watered down “compassionate conservatism” or better explanations of conservative “doctrine”; instead, Trump won by explicitly embracing right-wing nationalism. He willingly dropped certain false mandates from Conservatism Inc., such as “pure free trade.” And he won in spite of the gatekeepers and the resistance of official conservatism.

Back then, Trump got help from Frogtwitter, various underground podcasters, and local activists, who together made mincemeat of Trump’s opponents in the primary and general elections. Among other tactics, they did it with memes and with trolling. This asymmetrical, uncoordinated, and unpaid activism hurt Hillary so badly that she gave an entire speech (https://www.theverge.com/2016/9/15/12926976/hillary-clinton-trump-pepe-the-frog-alt-right-explainer) condemning the right’s online youth culture. Fittingly, someone shouted out “Pepe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_9f-4Koivc)” during the event.

Young right-wingers’ energy is mostly a positive thing—and, at the very least, it is certainly a powerful thing. It won’t be channeled into healthier directions through invoking the shopworn talking points of Conservatism Inc.—points made no more persuasive when they are adorned with glitzy marketing and guilt trips.

Coastal elites have projected their own preferences onto the young—social liberalism and free-market orthodoxy—but it turned out that young people want something more vital and meaningful. They grew up not particularly concerned about socialism—something that, however dangerous, is a boomer cultural touchstone and holdover from the Cold War.

Instead, what moves and alarms them is the very real and oppressive political correctness they experience directly at work and in school. They have seen tolerance for gays morph into “bake the cake, bigot (https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2017/10/20/bake_this_particular_cake_bigot_135310.html)” and “drag queen story hour (https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2019/october/librarys-drag-queen-story-hour-strip-show-goes-viral).” In school, they experienced the dangers of diversity (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_King_assault_case) worship. They face joblessness (https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2018/02/20/481055.htm) for stepping out of line. They have had enough.

These young people will not settle for legacy “sit-down-and-shut-up”-style conservatism. They are wary of Kirk’s formulae praising “legal immigration” or “American exceptionalism” or that Israel is always and in all cases “our greatest ally.” To their well-tuned ears, this sounds like propaganda in support of demographic replacement, a nation loosened from any historical identity, and endless wars in the Middle East.

The source of their passion is not only their life experience, but also young people’s natural hostility to authority. Trump’s love of trolling (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1190383074632257536) only amplified their identification with him. The young right’s facility with memes is reminiscent of the joking resistance (https://qz.com/913167/a-trove-of-anti-soviet-jokes-recently-declassified-by-the-cia-offers-a-glimpse-of-cold-war-humor/) among Soviet dissidents. Then, as now, a brittle and humorless establishment found its rhetoric diverging more and more from reality. Such a system is always vulnerable to a good joke.

The young men of the Right want real change. They want their country back. They want to fight a real culture war, not a facsimile of one. And they’re having a lot of fun trolling the repackaged messages of Conservatism, Inc.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The young man in the smiley face baseball hat and the Teddy Spaghetti T-shirt had a question for Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, a pro-Trump youth movement. It was about an incident that long predated both of their births, and Kirk knew just what to say.

“Why do you deny the attack on the USS Liberty which is well documented by both US and Israeli sources and which resulted in the deaths and injuries of over 200 Americans?” the man asked Kirk at an October event at the University of New Hampshire organized by Turning Point USA.

“I deny that it was a deliberate attack by the Israeli government,” Kirk replied coolly.

US and Israeli officials long ago concluded that the attack on the Liberty was a tragic mistake. In the midst of the 1967 Six Day War, Israel mistakenly identified the ship as Egyptian or Soviet and launched an airstrike, killing 34 crewmen. Israel apologized for the attack and paid damages to the United States and the families of the victims, but the incident has nonetheless been embraced by conspiracy theorists as a code for Israeli nefariousness.

It has also been embraced as part of a strategy by the far-right to publicly confront mainstream Republicans and insinuate their ideas into establishment conservatism. Led by Nick Fuentes, a 22-year-old YouTube personality, the so-called “groyper army” has regularly and publicly challenged mainstream conservatives for their views on the USS Liberty as part of a broader effort to paint them as subservient to Israel and unworthy heirs of US President Donald Trump’s “America first” agenda.

“RT if you think that Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA are not for America First,” Fuentes says in a tweet pinned to the top of his Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/NickJFuentes/status/1198100290257461248).

At events around the country, groypers have heckled mainstream conservatives and asked provocative questions — often about Israel, immigration and LGBTQ rights — in an effort to unmask them as “fake” conservatives (https://twitter.com/NickJFuentes/status/1189386064177324033) and “frauds.” Named for a more grotesque version (https://slate.com/technology/2017/12/groyper-the-far-right-s-new-meme-is-a-more-racist-version-of-pepe-the-frog.html) of the cartoon Pepe the Frog, (https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/pepe-the-frog) which has been coopted by white nationalists, the goal appears to be to move conservatism closer to white nationalism, according to Marilyn Mayo, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism.

“What they’re trying to do, there’s this whole grouping who refer to themselves as the dissident right, they want to move the Overton window (https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/02/25/overton-window-explained-definition-meaning-217010),” said Mayo, using a term that refers to the spectrum of acceptable political discourse. “They want to make racism and anti-Semitism mainstream.”

Turning Point is a particularly ripe target for that effort because of its emergence as the vanguard of Trump’s following among young adults. Last month, young people disrupted a Turning Point appearance by rising GOP star, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, at Arizona State University. Days later they made headlines when they drove Donald Trump Jr. off the stage at an event the group organized at UCLA.

“What a HUGE victory today,” Fuentes posted on Telegram, a secure messaging app favored by white nationalists, according to The Daily Beast. (https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-donald-trump-jr-landed-smack-in-the-middle-of-a-right-wing-civil-war) “Cannot be understated what an incredible win we saw at UCLA.”

Groypers carefully couch their views in code and irony. Provocative questions about race are often wrapped in anodyne terms like “identity” and “demographics.” And at a recent Turning Point USA event in Ohio, a questioner asked Kirk if there were “any awesome, fun dance parties” at a recent speaking engagement in Israel, an apparent reference to the myth that Israelis were caught on video dancing after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In an interview last year (https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/nick-fuentes-denies-being-a-white-nationalist-by-explaining-that-hes-a-white-nationalist/), Fuentes said he avoids the term “white nationalist” for purely tactical reasons.

“The reason I wouldn’t call myself a white nationalist — it’s not because I don’t see the necessity for white people to have a homeland and for white people to have a country,” Fuentes said. “It’s because I think that kind of terminology is used almost exclusively by the left to defame and I think the terminology and the labels that we use — I don’t think that we can look at them outside of the context of their connotations in America.”

The strategy appears to be bearing some fruit. In April, Ann Coulter retweeted (https://twitter.com/anncoulter/status/1113325906389389312?lang=en) a Fuentes tweet on immigration. Michelle Malkin, a Fox News regular, criticized (https://twitter.com/michellemalkin/status/1196152045285175296) efforts to silence groypers, who she described as “truth-tellers.”

“They’ve been trying to figure out since Charlottesville what new tactics can we do to recruit more people and get the attention of the media,” said Mayo. “What we’re really seeing is that some of the views that these white supremacists present at these Q&As are views that some people who are considered mainstream have adopted.”

There has been some skilled pushback from mainstream conservatives. When a heckler in Arizona shouted that Crenshaw is “pro-sodomy,” the congressman capably parried.

“Bring it out guys,” Crenshaw said. “Let everybody know who you are.”

Ben Shapiro, the Jewish conservative pundit, last month called out the groypers at an event of the Young American Foundation, another conservative youth movement that has denounced Fuentes. Shapiro noted that despite his best efforts, Fuentes was not always successful at maintaining an ironic distance from his bigotry.

“You also happen to have the unfortunate habit of saying really disgusting things when you think other people aren’t listening,” Shapiro said, recounting an incident in which Fuentes questioned the number of Jews murdered during the Holocaust by considering whether Cookie Monster could have baked six million cookies in five years. Shapiro then quoted a Nazi official describing how Jews were murdered.

“But maybe he was just being ironic, bro,” Shapiro said.

Howard Graves, a senior researcher at the Southern Poverty Law Center, who tracks the extreme right, said he saw in the groypers a new iteration of the 2016 election, when Trump pushed the Republican party rightward on issues like immigration.

“It is recapturing that spirit of the 2016 election where there is this kind of no-holds-barred insurgent campaign against conservatism,” he said.

The anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate (https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/) dismissed Mappin’s flag stunt at Camelot and said that his Turning Point UK – which recently unveiled a range of merchandise celebrating Boris Johnson’s election victory – was increasingly peripheral. “Mappin is an eccentric figure, considered outlandish even by his fringe rightwing peers. This childish ploy is a weak attempt at getting attention for himself and his marginal Turning Point UK organisation, and is better off being ignored,” it said in a statement.

The QAnon conspiracy theory is based on posts made by a user on the 4chan and 8chan websites. Its advocates believe that Trump is locked in a battle with elements of the “deep state”, including individuals such as Hillary Clinton.

Some also believe that Trump is on their side: he pointed out a “beautiful baby” (https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/qbaby-qanon-conspiracy-theory-trump-rally-860526/) whose jumpsuit was adorned with the “Q” symbol at a US rally last year and retweeted an account that promoted QAnon.

However, Hope Not Hate said that despite attempts by figures such as Mappin, the conspiracy theory has yet to gain traction within the UK. “The QAnon conspiracy theories feed into the wider paranoia and distrust of the American far right but have little traction in the UK outside of a few peripheral circles,” it added.

Among dozens of addled tweets from the commander-in-chief over the past few days, one in particular deserves pausing over, because it demonstrates not just his weak-mindedness, but also the way his leadership is sabotaging conservatism.

Trump retweeted (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1261626674686447621) an “America First” post featuring disgraced columnist Michelle Malkin complaining about conservatives being silenced on social media. Trump has retweeted (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/03/trump-white-nationalist-accounts-suspended-retweets.html) unsavory characters before, but in this case, he added an endorsement: “The radical left is in total command & control of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google. The administration is working to remedy this illegal situation. Stay tuned, and send names & events. Thank you Michelle!”

In the name of standing up for aggrieved conservatives, Trump soils the brand. First, a detail. The “radical left” is not in control of those outlets, and even if it were, they are private entities, and therefore perfectly free to make their own judgements about content. There is nothing “illegal” about it. If the administration were working to “remedy” the situation, that would be illegal. Another detail: Trump has 19.7 million followers on Instagram, 26.7 million on Facebook, and 80 million on Twitter. Perhaps what keeps him so popular is his audience’s inexhaustible appetite for whining.

The woman Trump thanked is a columnist and social media entrepreneur who was a respected member of the conservative commentariat – emphasis on the past tense. Her books were published by Regnery, she was a featured speaker for the Young America’s Foundation and at CPAC, she was a regular on Fox & Friends – the full fandango. In the past two years though, she has been pretty well shunned by respectable conservative outlets, or what passes for such nowadays. She is no longer welcome at CPAC. The Young America’s Foundation has dropped (https://thebulwark.com/a-good-start/) her, and the Daily Wire and National Review discontinued (https://thebulwark.com/michelle-malkin-mother-of-groypers/) her syndicated column.

The occasion for the deplatforming was Malkin’s swan dive into the right-wing fever swamps. Who can say whether the rise of Trump emboldened her to consort with racists and Holocaust deniers? Something like those tendencies were in evidence long ago. In 2004, she published a book titled In Defense of Internment: The Case for Racial Profiling in World War II and The War on Terror. That was a tell, but the real nutbaggery didn’t set in until about 2017, when she endorsed (https://www.facebook.com/therightmichellemalkin/posts/paul-nehlen-takes-it-right-to-paul-ryans-private-border-wall-and-slams-corporate/10157159315230084/) alt-right candidate Paul Nehlen (“Paul Nehlen slams . . . corporate open-borders elites!”), and contributed to the VDARE website which frequently hosts white nationalists, racists, and anti-Semites.

Her most grotesque relationship though, and the one that got her booted from the Young America’s Foundation, was with a group calling themselves “groypers,” led by a 21-year-old YouTube host named Nick Fuentes. To get a sense of just how loathsome this figure is, have a look at this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgN4ipYosPs) in which he wonders, grinning, about whether 6 million “cookies” could really be baked in ovens and how the “math doesn’t add up.”

Holocaust jokes. How droll.

Fuentes, you will not be shocked to learn, is one of the “very fine people” who marched with neo-Nazis at the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Remember Pepe the Frog? He’s their mascot. He described the mass murder in an El Paso Walmart as an “act of desperation.” Turning Point USA is too tame for his tastes, and his group has lately been heckling speakers like Ben Shapiro, Dan Crenshaw, and even Donald Trump, Jr.

In other words, if anything is beyond the pale for a civilized country, the “groypers” are it. Yet Michelle Malkin has declared herself the “mother of groypers (https://thebulwark.com/michelle-malkin-mother-of-groypers/)” and called them “good kids.” When she was rebuked by mainstream conservatives, she declared her allegiances proudly (https://arcdigital.media/the-indecency-of-michelle-malkin-efe7574d8cb4):


They want me to disavow Nick Fuentes and VDARE and Peter Brimelow and Faith Goldy and Gavin McInnes and the Proud Boys and Steve King and Laura Loomer and on and on. They want to do to me what they’ve done to brilliant academics who’ve told the truth — Amy Wax at the University of Pennsylvania and Darren Beattie and Jason Richwine and Steve Sailer.



“They” did want that, or at least some mainstream conservatives were willing to draw a line (the grosser MAGA-types like Mike Cernovich and Jim Hoft were (https://thebulwark.com/a-good-start/) not). But now Trump has vitiated that work by praising Malkin. The thing Trump retweeted was not actually a Malkin post, but a tweet of Malkin speaking to a Fuentes event. “America First Clips” is a feed for one of Fuentes’s outlets. Naturally, Fuentes is gloating (https://www.jpost.com/american-politics/trump-retweets-video-by-conservative-shunned-for-supporting-antisemite-628519).

Trump defenders will no doubt protest that Trump knew nothing of Malkin’s descent into neo-Nazi land; that he was merely endorsing her complaint about discrimination against conservative voices. Or they may object that Trump was taken in by the title “America First Clips,” assuming that a group using his tagline must be okay.

But that’s no excuse at all. In fact, Trump probably did not know much about those he praised, either Malkin or, by extension, Fuentes. But he has a duty to know. Yes, he’s an indolent ignoramus, but guess what, the taxpayers are paying for a huge staff. He has people who can check. He doesn’t use them because he doesn’t care. His moral reasoning is primitive. If you are pro-Trump, no matter what else you are (a murderous dictator, a racist troll), you’re fine in his book. A bunch of loutish protesters (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/05/trump-cheers-supporters-harassed-reporter-lockdown-protest-great-people.html) harass a TV journalist using the F words (“fake news” and the other one), and Trump proclaims them “great people.” He has no objective moral standards. Everything is about him. On a scale of moral reasoning, he is subzero.

But the world of conservative opinion shapers does still attempt, however weakly, to maintain some guard rails. With every passing day of Donald Trump’s leadership, those standards crumble a bit more.
