They hand off to the Feds to bypass state law on asset forfeiture, the Feds take 20% for their *trouble* then give the 80% back to the agency that handed off the cash to the Feds. Buried in this article -

I read the article and found where you said it was buried, and it was. Very telling, and the pieces of the puzzle come together. Good find, Midnight. Bump this topic up to the top.

Towing vehicles. From a LE viewpoint, that vehicle has to be inventoried and written up. But, who inventories it? The cop doing the tow.

Think about that for a minute. There's plenty of way to skim off the top with valuables found and reported. They preach a lot of ethics in LE to new recruits, but I wonder how much of that stick over time.
