They basically want digital control systems through the financial system, through the health system and government systems to implement control. That control is delivered one person at a time. You have extraordinary surveillance systems that have been built steadily for decades that are basically tracking everyone. . . . That’s why the ‘vaccine passports’ and ‘central bank digital currencies’ (CBDC) are so dangerous. It’s important to understand what they are trying to do. They are trying to create complete transaction control. If they don’t want you going five miles from your home, your electric car will not work more than five miles from your home. . . . If they don’t want you to buy pizza, your credit card will not allow you to buy pizza. They are talking about putting in extraordinary digital control systems and literally turning your car and your home into a digital concentration camp.”
How do you fight back to this digital tyranny? CAF explains, “You fight back by saying No. Do not comply. What we are seeing around the world is that the places where people refuse to comply, it’s not working. The mandates are not working, and the passports are not working where people say no. You are not going to control me. You are not going to tell me where I can and cannot go. I am not going along. You have to massively not comply.”
One good way to not comply is to use good old fashion cash for every transaction you can. CAF says, “You need to hold onto your cash because once the system goes all digital, that’s when you can convert to the digital concentration camps. If the system stays cash and more and more people use cash, the perfect system is part cash and part digital because cash can’t be controlled. . . . What we are looking for is decentralization, and decentralization comes with cash and it comes with coin.”
As far as the CV19 “plandemic,” CAF says, “I don’t think depopulation is the only goal, and that is certainly what has been happening. The proof that that is happening is when the data started coming in about how bad the deaths and injuries were–they didn’t stop it or change it. They continued to double down on more and more effort on mandating when they knew the adverse events and deaths are very, very significant.”
CAF says there are many ways to fight back, and she talks about those strategies in the interview that is nearly 48 min. long.

I've also been visiting Unz a lot lately, and doing much more reading of Anglin.

Since falls of this magnitude have not been seen for more than three generations, the shockwaves will be calamitous.

The reasons for a reduction of world population are obvious: Economic collapse, misery, famine, disease and wars.

I decided to write about something new so that my readers would not get bored or too saddened by the recent birth rate news. So, I logged onto the World Economic Forum’s website, hoping to wade through their articles for a while in search of some random crazy idea to write about.
It turned out that the very first article WAS a crazy idea!

Make us stop eating meat: “Decreasing the amount of land devoted to livestock will reduce methane emissions”
Plant genetically engineered crops in place of pastures, that would capture carbon. “By using a molecule found in avocado and cantaloupe skins, these engineered roots can better resist decomposition, minimizing carbon escape.”

So, after we stop eating meat, they plan on liquidating pastures and planting those genetically engineered “carbon-capturing” plants on the pasture land.
The plants would have genetically altered polymer roots (https://www.salk.edu/science/power-of-plants/) (archive (https://archive.ph/IvxEH)) that will not decompose. Think of these roots, for the purposes of discussing decomposition, as being made of plastic polymers, like plastic fibers or ropes.

Thus, the WEF plan goes, these GM plants would grow in former pastures, grow polymer roots, and die every year, BUT THE ROOTS WILL NOT DECOMPOSE. Since the roots do not decompose, the soil will gradually become firmly permeated by a thickening tangle of never-disappearing polymer roots. Those roots would hold CO2 forever.
Great right? Except that I have some questions:


Will this pasture soil be basically permanently condemned to hosting these genetically modified plants, since no other plants could penetrate the tangles of plastic-like polymer roots until the jammed soil no longer supports any growth at all?
What will happen to the diversity of native pasture plants that never evolved to grow on soil which is blockaded by these genetically modified, never-rotting plants?
What will happen to insects such as bees, living off native pasture plants and their pollen?
What will happen to worms, no longer able to move through the soil?
What will happen to the birds, who eat those insects and worms?
What will happen to burrowing animals, who no longer would be able to burrow in the tangles?
What if, like Sars-Cov-2, these soil-clogging, never-rotting plants escape and outcompete wild plants everywhere else? Before you dismiss that, please realize that these plants have to outcompete natural pasture plants to take root in the former pastures.

Such uncontrolled occupation of a new ecosystem happened with rabbits in Australia, for example. The rabbits were brought in without much forethought and outcompeted other wild animals and became a threat to Australia's ecosystem. Those rabbits also ate all plants they could eat, leaving barren soil, before dying off en masse after that but never relinquishing their ecosystem dominance. Thankfully, the Australian rabbits were not designed to never decompose.

And, lastly, the biggest concern: What if these plants become so successful and widespread beyond pastures, that they remove TOO MUCH carbon from the atmosphere, turn out all soil into an endless tangle of dead plastic-like root material, and leave no other carbon dioxide to feed normal plants and plankton?
Remember that all plants need CO2 to grow: they capture it via photosynthesis and convert it into plant material. No plants can live without CO2!

If not controlled, the lab-designed “carbon capturing plants” could suck CO2 out of the atmosphere and make soil logged with non-decomposing polymer fibers, and end our plant life which depends on CO2.
We are having a problem with Sars-Cov-2, which science was able to design, but isn’t able to stop. What if the genetically modified plants spread beyond pastures, into fields and wild forests?
What if this ends with the Earth being a frozen (due to too much CO2 removed), barren (due to polymer roots preventing normal growth and too little CO2 to support plant and aquatic plant development), grey planet with no room for any other plant life?
I doubt that any WEF dreamer is asking these questions. Or are they? Is there anyone not on their payroll who is looking at this with the absolutely highest degree of skepticism? Or are WEF’s paid acolytes purposely dismissing such reasonable concerns as “conspiracy theories” using paid “fact checkers”?
I understand that there is money to be made from buying pastures and converting them to polymer-rooted plants and capturing “carbon credits” and making profits. I am pro-business. At the same time, I want my planet to have a future for my kids and (hopefully) future grandchildren.
These people are working on outlandish projects, using billions in dark funding, with essentially no adult supervision or questioning allowed. This reminds me of “virologists”, messing around creating chimeric viruses, without effective oversight. We know how that ended.

Lab-Designed GMO "Carbon Capture Plants" to Replace Pastures

I decided to write about something new so that my readers would not get bored or too saddened by the recent birth rate news. So, I logged onto the World Economic Forum’s website, hoping to wade through their articles for a while in search of some random crazy idea to write about.
It turned out that the very first article WAS a crazy idea!

Their plan (per article) is as follows:


Make us stop eating meat: “Decreasing the amount of land devoted to livestock will reduce methane emissions”
Plant genetically engineered crops in place of pastures, that would capture carbon. “By using a molecule found in avocado and cantaloupe skins, these engineered roots can better resist decomposition, minimizing carbon escape.”

So, after we stop eating meat, they plan on liquidating pastures and planting those genetically engineered “carbon-capturing” plants on the pasture land.
The plants would have genetically altered polymer roots (https://www.salk.edu/science/power-of-plants/) (archive (https://archive.ph/IvxEH)) that will not decompose. Think of these roots, for the purposes of discussing decomposition, as being made of plastic polymers, like plastic fibers or ropes.

Thus, the WEF plan goes, these GM plants would grow in former pastures, grow polymer roots, and die every year, BUT THE ROOTS WILL NOT DECOMPOSE. Since the roots do not decompose, the soil will gradually become firmly permeated by a thickening tangle of never-disappearing polymer roots. Those roots would hold CO2 forever.
Great right? Except that I have some questions:


Will this pasture soil be basically permanently condemned to hosting these genetically modified plants, since no other plants could penetrate the tangles of plastic-like polymer roots until the jammed soil no longer supports any growth at all?
What will happen to the diversity of native pasture plants that never evolved to grow on soil which is blockaded by these genetically modified, never-rotting plants?
What will happen to insects such as bees, living off native pasture plants and their pollen?
What will happen to worms, no longer able to move through the soil?
What will happen to the birds, who eat those insects and worms?
What will happen to burrowing animals, who no longer would be able to burrow in the tangles?
What if, like Sars-Cov-2, these soil-clogging, never-rotting plants escape and outcompete wild plants everywhere else? Before you dismiss that, please realize that these plants have to outcompete natural pasture plants to take root in the former pastures.

Such uncontrolled occupation of a new ecosystem happened with rabbits in Australia, for example. The rabbits were brought in without much forethought and outcompeted other wild animals and became a threat to Australia's ecosystem. Those rabbits also ate all plants they could eat, leaving barren soil, before dying off en masse after that but never relinquishing their ecosystem dominance. Thankfully, the Australian rabbits were not designed to never decompose.

And, lastly, the biggest concern: What if these plants become so successful and widespread beyond pastures, that they remove TOO MUCH carbon from the atmosphere, turn out all soil into an endless tangle of dead plastic-like root material, and leave no other carbon dioxide to feed normal plants and plankton?
Remember that all plants need CO2 to grow: they capture it via photosynthesis and convert it into plant material. No plants can live without CO2!

If not controlled, the lab-designed “carbon capturing plants” could suck CO2 out of the atmosphere and make soil logged with non-decomposing polymer fibers, and end our plant life which depends on CO2.
We are having a problem with Sars-Cov-2, which science was able to design, but isn’t able to stop. What if the genetically modified plants spread beyond pastures, into fields and wild forests?
What if this ends with the Earth being a frozen (due to too much CO2 removed), barren (due to polymer roots preventing normal growth and too little CO2 to support plant and aquatic plant development), grey planet with no room for any other plant life?
I doubt that any WEF dreamer is asking these questions. Or are they? Is there anyone not on their payroll who is looking at this with the absolutely highest degree of skepticism? Or are WEF’s paid acolytes purposely dismissing such reasonable concerns as “conspiracy theories” using paid “fact checkers”?
I understand that there is money to be made from buying pastures and converting them to polymer-rooted plants and capturing “carbon credits” and making profits. I am pro-business. At the same time, I want my planet to have a future for my kids and (hopefully) future grandchildren.
These people are working on outlandish projects, using billions in dark funding, with essentially no adult supervision or questioning allowed. This reminds me of “virologists”, messing around creating chimeric viruses, without effective oversight. We know how that ended.
Would you plant those plants in your garden to help capture CO2? There is an old saying, "Don't fool with Mother Nature" Actually I think it was "you can't fool Mother Nature" in the end God wins, Satan loses.

Since COVID hysteria first emerged, skeptics have been proven correct time and time again with their forecasts of initiatives that the declared state of emergency which followed the viruses spread would advance. Digital IDs perhaps stand at the forefront of that plethora of phantasmagorical schemes.
Like pandemic simulation exercises which preceded COVID-19, ample evidence existed which displayed the underlying agenda to implement digital IDs, namely evidenced through the Bill Gates led ID2020 (https://id2020.org/digital-identity) alliance. However, launching such an over-arching initiative which would recalibrate how the levers of society operate has proven to be easier said than done. Nearly two years ago, the first iteration of legislation aimed this agenda named the Improving Digital Identity Act of 2020 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/8215/all-actions?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22improving+digita l+identity+act+of+2020%22%2C%22improving%22%2C%22d igital%22%2C%22identity%22%2C%22act%22%2C%22of%22% 2C%222020%22%5D%7D&s=2&r=1) entered into the fold after being introduced by Illinois Democrat Bill Foster, Rhode Island Democrat Jim Langevin, Georgia Republican Barry Loudermilk and New York Republican John Katko under the guise of helping improve existing databases and information technology systems. Coincidentally, the proposed legislation was introduced into the House of Representatives on September 11th, 2020 of all days before being referred to the House Committees on Oversight and Reform, as well as Science, Space, and Technology, and lastly Ways and Means. Foster spoke on his drafted legislation during a webinar held by ID2020 (https://www.biometricupdate.com/202011/author-of-us-digital-id-bill-discusses-central-role-of-biometrics-in-id2020-webinar) itself just two months after the bill's introduction to the house.
Though the bill would languish in committee before ultimately dying out, Foster introduced another iteration of it the following year, titled the Improving Digital Identity Act of 2021 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/4258/all-actions?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Improving+Digita l+Identity+Act+of%22%2C%22Improving%22%2C%22Digita l%22%2C%22Identity%22%2C%22Act%22%2C%22of%22%5D%7D&s=5&r=1) which like its predecessor was referred to relevant House Committees. Unlike the 2020 incarnation of the bill, the 2021 edition (https://foster.house.gov/sites/foster.house.gov/files/FOSTER_046_xml.pdf) has advanced through committee hearings since its introduction to the house on June 30th, 2021. On July 14th, 2022, the proposed legislation took its most recent step toward being actualized when the House Committee on Oversight and Reform held a hearing for consideration of and mark-ups to the bill. Latching onto that momentum, New York Congressional Representative and Chair of the House Oversight Committee Carolyn Maloney (https://www.zerohedge.com/political/science-dem-rep-says-its-not-only-women-can-have-babies) introduced an amendment (https://docs.house.gov/meetings/GO/GO00/20220714/115007/BILLS-117-HR4258-M000087-Amdt-1.pdf) to the act, signifying the stake the committee she leads has taken on ultimately achieving its passage. Just a day before the House Oversight Committee's last hearing on Foster's 2021 bill, Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced her intent to push a similar bill in the Senate (https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/4528/text), conveying a multi-faceted strategy to finally implement a digital ID sanctioned by the federal government.

While efforts have stalled since the first real attempts to create a digital ID system in the US, the global landscape of this endeavor has seen more traction. In her State of the Union Address in September of 2020, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen declared:
“Every time an App or website asks us to create a new digital identity or to easily log on via a big platform, we have no idea what happens to our data in reality. That is why the Commission will propose a secure European e-identity. One that we trust and that any citizen can use anywhere in Europe to do anything from paying your taxes to renting a bicycle. A technology where we can control ourselves what data is used and how."

In June of 2021, the European Commission formally (https://www.politico.eu/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/03/amdening-regulation.pdf) announced its intent to implement a bloc-wide digital ID (https://ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/european-digital-identity_en). While the EU effort to implement this agenda has yet to introduced an official ID, its clear intent conveys that it is simply a matter of time. On the whole European governments, have passed much more restrictive measures veiled as pandemic response efforts showing the political climate is much more conducive to the introduction of digital IDs throughout and beyond the EU.
One application of digital ID that highlights how the technology could be used against citizens is highlighted in the EU's recently passed Digital Services Act (https://ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/digital-services-act-ensuring-safe-and-accountable-online-environment_en). The landmark law is aimed at regulating online content and sets a framework for unique content IDs which can be linked to users' digital IDs which in turn would be prerequisite to signing up for everything from social media to e-commerce accounts. The invasive application of digital ID linked to content online appears to be a red flag for advocates of free speech concerned that the practice could be weaponized against dissent and would further restrictive laws designating political wrong-think as hate speech. Ultimately, the dawn of digital ID could serve as what brings the days of anonymity online to an end.
State-side, lawmakers view their latest proposed legislation much more auspiciously. In an attempt to assuage any concerns about digital IDs serving as an all-encompassing means of government surveillance over its citizens, proponents of the Improving Digital Identity Act of 2021 have assured citizens that the bill would prohibit the creation of a “unilateral central national identification registry relating to digital identity verification.” Instead, the bill would focuses on creating a standardization of existing digital IDs through efforts fledged by the US Department of Homeland Security and the National Institute for Standards and Technology, the bureaucracy that lost most Americans favor when it took longer than a decade to reach its official conclusions on the collapse of WTC Building 7, which was starkly omitted from the 9/11 Commission Report released in 2004.
While the narrative tailored in favor of the bill highlights existing cyber security issues to digital IDs already implemented across different agencies of the federal government, the underlying skepticism that has built over the last few years sees those assurances are taken with a grain of salt. Concurrently, the build up of the Federal Reserve toward developing and ultimately launching a Central Bank Digital Currency (https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/central-bank-digital-currencies-are-coming-what-will-consequences-be?EdNo=224) perhaps best highlights the inevitable emergence of a uniform national digital ID that politicians deliberating in Congress swear is not their aim. The enforcement mechanism CBDC would provide in tandem to its adjacent digital IDs has been a profound concern of vocal critics of both initiatives.
The deaf stance rejecting Americans opposition to digital ID shows how little the decline in trust of government resonates with Congress, simultaneously showing that the will of the people if the furthest thing from what directs their actions. As things stand, the Improving Digital Identity Act of 2021 proves that the Congress intends to get the digital ID it desires by any means necessary, regardless of their constituents opinion on the issue.

New York University's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice has issued a chilling warning about the potential dangers to human rights posed by the push for digital identity.

In mid-June, the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (https://chrgj.org/), a "hub for human rights study" at New York University (NYU) School of Law, issued a 100-page report detailing the growing dangers of a reliance on digital identity around the world. The report, titled Paving a Digital Road to Hell? (https://chrgj.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Report_Paving-a-Digital-Road-to-Hell.pdf), examines the role of the world bank and other international networks which have been promoting the use if digital ID in recent years.




The report notes that the World Bank has been "energetically promoting biometric and other digital ID systems that are increasingly linked to large-scale human rights violations, especially in the Global South". The researchers warn that digital identity schemes "promoted in the name of development and inclusion, might be achieving neither". Despite ostensible good intentions on the part of some promoting these systems, they "may well be paving a digital road to hell."

"Governments around the world have been investing heavily in digital identification systems, often with biometric components (digital ID). The rapid proliferation of such systems is driven by a new development consensus, packaged and promoted by key global actors like the World Bank, but also by governments, foundations, vendors and consulting firms." The report states that many of the digital identity schemes are taking inspiration from the Aadhaar system in India. This specific digital ID model has prioritized digital ID as an "economic identity", according to the report. "The goal of such systems is primarily to establish 'uniqueness' of individuals, commonly with the help of biometric technologies," the release states. This in turn allows for bringing in impoverished people from the "informal" or "counter-economy" to the formal economy. This also has the effect of "unlocking" their behavioral data that can then be used by governments and other parties.

The report also notes that the Executive Chairman of the influential ID4Africa, a platform where African governments and major companies in the digital ID market meet, noted at the 2022 Annual Meeting in June (https://www.biometricupdate.com/202206/id-is-no-longer-just-about-identity-day-1-of-id4africa-2022) that digital ID is no longer about identity alone but,

"enables and interacts with authentication platforms, payments systems, digital signatures, data sharing, KYC systems, consent management and sectoral delivery platforms." The report details how the promoters of the new digital/economic identity model often evade "difficult questions" about the legal status and rights of those being registered. Despite promises of inclusion and flourishing digital economies, digital ID systems have "consistently failed to deliver on these promises in real world situations, especially for the most marginalized". The Aadhaar system itself has been criticized for severe and large-scale human rights violations.

In fact, the report finds that the evidence indicates it is the small group of companies and governments who stand to benefit most from these systems.
"After all, where digital ID systems have tended to excel is in generating lucrative contracts for biometrics companies and enhancing the surveillance and migration-control capabilities of governments." Who is Driving the Push to Digital Identity?

The authors of the report also call for a "more clearly developed notion of 'who' are the most relevant actors driving this agenda and 'what' are the key concepts that should be contested and reimagined". They say that much can be learned by focusing on the actions of the World Bank Group, and, "more specifically its ID4D Initiative (https://www.biometricupdate.com/202202/id4d-report-2022-to-see-significant-progress-towards-paradigm-shift-in-digital-id), as a central node in a more extensive global network of digital ID promotion."

In 2014, the World Bank launched the Identification for Development (ID4D) program (https://id4d.worldbank.org/) with the aim of solving the problem of a lack of identity for much of the so-called "developing world". The World Bank is funding digital biometric ID programs in Mexico (https://projects.worldbank.org/en/projects-operations/project-detail/P172647), pushing digital ID in poorer countries with the ostensible goal of providing legal identity to the 1.1 billion people who do not currently have one.

This program was started with a "catalytic investment" from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Omidyar Network, as well as various governments. The report notes:

"We have noted that the World Bank and its ID4D Initiative do not stand alone in pursuing the digital ID agenda. They exist within a global network of organizations and individuals. This includes donor governments like the United Kingdom, the United States and France; global foundations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and Omidyar Network; tech-savvy governments such as in India and Estonia; the UN system, including the members of the UN-Legal Identity Agenda Task Force; regional development banks, including the Asian Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank; private biometrics corporations like Idemia, Thales, and Gemalto; card companies such as MasterCard; new networks such as the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and ID4Africa; and numerous other global organizations" Many of the governments and companies listed above are also partners with the World Economic Forum, the proponents of "The Great Reset (https://www.thelastamericanvagabond.com/covid19-great-reset-new-normal/)". The Gates Foundation is likely more well known to regular readers, but the Omidyar Network should also raise red flags. The Omidyar Network was set up by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and Pam Omidyar. Interestingly, the NYU report states that proponents of this digital identity future have "cloaked this new paradigm in the language of human rights and inclusion, arguing that such systems will help to achieve multiple Sustainable Development Goals".

As I reported in my previous investigation, Exposing the "Digital ID is a Human Right" Scam (https://www.thelastamericanvagabond.com/exposing-digital-id-human-right-scam/), the push towards a digital identity has its roots in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked objectives adopted by the United Nations in 2015 with the ostensible goal of ending poverty, protecting the planet, and spreading peace and prosperity to all people by 2030.

The SDGs were part of a larger resolution known as the 2030 Agenda, or Agenda 2030, with the stated purpose of fighting climate change. While the United Nations SDGs and Agenda 2030 are often touted as a tool for establishing healthy multilateral relationships between nations, in truth, they are based in a deeper agenda to monitor, control, and direct all life on the planet.

The UN and the World Economic Forum have regularly promoted the idea of a digital identity as a necessity for life in the 2020's.

It's clear that this effort to strong-arm the world into accepting digital identity programs is part of a larger push towards biometrics, a track and trace society, and, eventually, tools like Central Bank Digital Currencies.

While the NYU report is the latest to warn about the dangers of the quickly approaching digital world, this is not the first warning. In April 2021, the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice published a skeptical piece titled "Everyone Counts! Ensuring that the human rights of all are respected in digital ID systems (https://chrgj.org/2021/04/06/everyone-counts-ensuring-that-the-human-rights-of-all-are-respected-in-digital-id-systems/)." This article looked at some of the ways marginalized populations are further marginalized by digital systems. They warn of the "need for the human rights movement to engage in discussions about digital transformation so that fundamental rights are not lost in the rush to build a 'modern, digital state'."

In January 2020 — prior to the COVID-19 crisis and the increase in biometrics and vaccine passports — forty organizations signed a letter (https://themindunleashed.com/2020/01/40-privacy-groups-warn-that-facial-recognition-is-threatening-democracy.html) calling on an independent government watchdog to recommend a ban on U.S. government use of facial recognition technology. The organizations challenged the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) to "examine the more significant public concerns about the use of facial recognition in public spaces." They also called on the board to address concerns that facial recognition software can be used by "authoritarian governments to control minority populations and limit dissent" and that this "could spread quickly to democratic societies."

What is clear at this pressing moment is that it will take a combination of the people standing up and pushing back against these systems, and academics and think tanks like the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, to force a much needed debate about these technologies. The CHRGJ outlines the need for an "equally global effort by the entire human rights ecosystem" to counter the influence of the global network of digital identity advocates.

We teeter on the cusp of a cultural, technological and societal revolution the likes of which have never been seen before.
While the political Left and Right continue to make abortion the face of the debate over the right to privacy (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/27/abortion-ruling-could-scramble-data-privacy-talks/) in America, the government and its corporate partners, aided by rapidly advancing technology, are reshaping the world into one in which there is no privacy at all.
Nothing that was once private is protected.
We have not even begun to register the fallout from the tsunami bearing down upon us in the form of AI (artificial intelligence) surveillance, and yet it is already re-orienting our world into one in which freedom is almost unrecognizable.
AI surveillance harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and widespread surveillance technology to do what the police state lacks the manpower and resources to do efficiently or effectively (https://carnegieendowment.org/2019/09/17/global-expansion-of-ai-surveillance-pub-79847): be everywhere, watch everyone and everything, monitor, identify, catalogue, cross-check, cross-reference, and collude.
Everything that was once private is now up for grabs to the right buyer.
Governments and corporations alike have heedlessly adopted AI surveillance technologies without any care or concern for their long-term impact on the rights of the citizenry.
As a special report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace warns, “A growing number of states are deploying advanced AI surveillance tools to monitor, track, and surveil citizens to accomplish a range of policy objectives—some lawful, others that violate human rights, and many of which fall into a murky middle ground (https://carnegieendowment.org/2019/09/17/global-expansion-of-ai-surveillance-pub-79847).”
Indeed, with every new AI surveillance technology that is adopted and deployed without any regard for privacy, Fourth Amendment rights and due process, the rights of the citizenry are being marginalized, undermined and eviscerated.
Cue the rise of digital authoritarianism.
Digital authoritarianism (https://www.csis.org/analysis/promote-and-build-strategic-approach-digital-authoritarianism), as the Center for Strategic and International Studies cautions, involves the use of information technology to surveil, repress, and manipulate the populace, endangering human rights and civil liberties, and co-opting and corrupting the foundational principles of democratic and open societies, “including freedom of movement, the right to speak freely and express political dissent, and the right to personal privacy, online and off.”
The seeds of digital authoritarianism were planted in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, with the passage of the USA Patriot Act. A massive 342-page wish list of expanded powers for the FBI and CIA, the Patriot Act justified broader domestic surveillance, the logic being that if government agents knew more about each American, they could distinguish the terrorists from law-abiding citizens.
It sounded the death knell for the freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, especially the Fourth Amendment, and normalized the government’s mass surveillance powers.
Writing for the New York Times, Jeffrey Rosen observed that “before Sept. 11, the idea that Americans would voluntarily agree to live their lives under the gaze of a network of biometric surveillance cameras, peering at them in government buildings, shopping malls, subways and stadiums, would have seemed unthinkable (https://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/07/magazine/a-watchful-state.html), a dystopian fantasy of a society that had surrendered privacy and anonymity.”
Who could have predicted that 50 years after George Orwell typed the final words to his dystopian novel 1984, “He loved Big Brother,” we would come to love Big Brother.
Yet that is exactly what has come to pass.
After 9/11, Rosen found that “people were happy to give up privacy without experiencing a corresponding increase in security (https://books.google.com/books?id=u_BRLMNvjGQC&pg=PA34). More concerned about feeling safe than actually being safe, they demanded the construction of vast technological architectures of surveillance even though the most empirical studies suggested that the proliferation of surveillance cameras had ‘no effect on violent crime’ or terrorism.”
In the decades following 9/11, a massive security-industrial complex arose that was fixated on militarization, surveillance, and repression.
Surveillance is the key.
We’re being watched everywhere we go. Speed cameras. Red light cameras. Police body cameras. Cameras on public transportation. Cameras in stores. Cameras on public utility poles. Cameras in cars. Cameras in hospitals and schools. Cameras in airports.
We’re being recorded at least 50 times a day (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8774151/Most-Americans-recorded-238-TIMES-week-security-cameras-study-reveals.html).
It’s estimated that there are upwards of 85 million surveillance cameras in the U.S. alone, second only to China (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9271857/US-second-surveilled-country-China-one-camera-five-people-big-cities.html).
On any given day, the average American going about his daily business is monitored, surveilled, spied on and tracked in more than 20 different ways by both government and corporate eyes and ears.
Beware of what you say, what you read, what you write, where you go, and with whom you communicate, because it will all be recorded, stored and used against you eventually, at a time and place of the government’s choosing.
Yet it’s not just what we say, where we go and what we buy that is being tracked.
We’re being surveilled right down to our genes (https://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/07/magazine/a-watchful-state.html), thanks to a potent combination of hardware, software and data collection that scans our biometrics (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/surveillance-technology-biometrics)—our faces, irises, voices, genetics, microbiomes, scent, gait, heartbeat, breathing, behaviors—runs them through computer programs that can break the data down into unique “identifiers,” and then offers them up to the government and its corporate allies for their respective uses.
As one AI surveillance advocate proclaimed, “Surveillance is no longer only a watchful eye, but a predictive one as well (https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2022/02/03/ai-surveillance/).” For instance, Emotion AI, an emerging technology that is gaining in popularity, uses facial recognition technology “to analyze expressions based on a person’s faceprint (https://venturebeat.com/2022/07/17/emotion-ai-a-possible-path-to-thought-policing/) to detect their internal emotions or feelings, motivations and attitudes.” China claims its AI surveillance can already read facial expressions and brain waves in order to determine the extent to which members of the public are grateful, obedient and willing to comply with the Communist Party (https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/china-uses-mind-reading-ai-to-test-loyalty-of-communist-party-members/ar-AAZbrxV).

This is the slippery slope that leads to the thought police.
The technology is already being used “by border guards to detect threats at border checkpoints, as an aid for detection and diagnosis of patients for mood disorders, to monitor classrooms for boredom or disruption (https://venturebeat.com/2022/07/17/emotion-ai-a-possible-path-to-thought-policing/), and to monitor human behavior during video calls.”
For all intents and purposes, we now have a fourth branch of government: the surveillance state.
This fourth branch came into being without any electoral mandate or constitutional referendum, and yet it possesses superpowers, above and beyond those of any other government agency save the military. It is all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful. It operates beyond the reach of the president, Congress and the courts, and it marches in lockstep with the corporate elite who really call the shots in Washington, DC.

The government’s “technotyranny” surveillance apparatus has become so entrenched and entangled with its police state apparatus that it’s hard to know anymore where law enforcement ends and surveillance begins.
The short answer: they have become one and the same entity. The police state has passed the baton to the surveillance state, which has shifted into high gear with the help of artificial intelligence technologies. The COVID-19 pandemic helped to further centralize digital power in the hands of the government (https://www.csis.org/analysis/promote-and-build-strategic-approach-digital-authoritarianism) at the expense of the citizenry’s privacy rights.

“From cameras that identify the faces of passersby to algorithms that keep tabs on public sentiment online, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools are opening new frontiers in state surveillance around the world (https://www.ned.org/global-struggle-over-ai-surveillance-emerging-trends-democratic-responses/).” So begins the Carnegie Endowment’s report on AI surveillance note.

“Law enforcement, national security, criminal justice, and border management organizations in every region are relying on these technologies—which use statistical pattern recognition, machine learning, and big data analytics—to monitor citizens.”

In the hands of tyrants and benevolent dictators alike, AI surveillance is the ultimate means of repression and control, especially through the use of smart city/safe city platforms, facial recognition systems, and predictive policing (https://carnegieendowment.org/2019/09/17/global-expansion-of-ai-surveillance-pub-79847). These technologies are also being used by violent extremist groups, as well as sex, child, drug, and arms traffickers (https://www.csis.org/analysis/promote-and-build-strategic-approach-digital-authoritarianism) for their own nefarious purposes.

China, the role model for our dystopian future, has been a major force in deploying AI surveillance on its own citizens, especially by way of its social credit systems, which it employs to identify, track and segregate its “good” citizens from the “bad.”
Social media credit scores assigned to Chinese individuals and businesses categorize them on whether or not they are worthy of being part of society. A real-name system—which requires people to use government-issued ID cards to buy mobile sims, obtain social media accounts, take a train, board a plane, or even buy groceries (https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/03/china-ai-big-data-combat-coronavirus-outbreak-200301063901951.html)—coupled with social media credit scores ensures that those blacklisted as “unworthy” are banned from accessing financial markets, buying real estate or travelling by air or train (https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/2186606/chinas-social-credit-system-shows-its-teeth-banning-millions). Among the activities that can get you labeled unworthy are taking reserved seats on trains or causing trouble in hospitals.
In much the same way that Chinese products have infiltrated almost every market worldwide and altered consumer dynamics, China is now exporting its “authoritarian tech” to governments worldwide (https://www.foreign.senate.gov/download/2020-sfrc-minority-report_-the-new-big-brother---china-and-digital-authoritarianism) ostensibly in an effort to spread its brand of totalitarianism worldwide. In fact, both China and the United States have led the way in supplying the rest of the world with AI surveillance (https://carnegieendowment.org/2019/09/17/global-expansion-of-ai-surveillance-pub-79847), sometimes at a subsidized rate.
This is how totalitarianism conquers the world.
While countries with authoritarian regimes have been eager to adopt AI surveillance, as the Carnegie Endowment’s research makes clear, liberal democracies are also “aggressively using AI tools to police borders, apprehend potential criminals, monitor citizens for bad behavior (https://carnegieendowment.org/2019/09/17/global-expansion-of-ai-surveillance-pub-79847), and pull out suspected terrorists from crowds.”

Moreover, it’s easy to see how the China model for internet control has been integrated into the American police state’s efforts to flush out so-called anti-government, domestic extremists.

According to journalist Adrian Shahbaz’s in-depth report, there are nine elements to the Chinese model of digital authoritarianism (https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-net/2018/rise-digital-authoritarianism) when it comes to censoring speech and targeting activists: 1) dissidents suffer from persistent cyber attacks and phishing; 2) social media, websites, and messaging apps are blocked; 3) posts that criticize government officials are removed; 4) mobile and internet access are revoked as punishment for activism; 5) paid commentators drown out government criticism; 6) new laws tighten regulations on online media; 7) citizens’ behavior monitored via AI and surveillance tools; 9) individuals regularly arrested for posts critical of the government; and 9) online activists are made to disappear.

You don’t even have to be a critic of the government to get snared in the web of digital censorship and AI surveillance.

The danger posed by the surveillance state applies equally to all of us: lawbreaker and law-abider alike.

When the government sees all and knows all and has an abundance of laws to render even the most seemingly upstanding citizen a criminal and lawbreaker, then the old adage that you’ve got nothing to worry about if you’ve got nothing to hide no longer applies.

As Orwell wrote in 1984, “You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.”
In an age of too many laws, too many prisons, too many government spies, and too many corporations eager to make a fast buck at the expense of the American taxpayer, we are all guilty of some transgression or other.
No one is spared.
As Elise Thomas writes for Wired: “New surveillance tech means you'll never be anonymous again (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/surveillance-technology-biometrics).”

It won’t be long before we find ourselves looking back on the past with longing, back to an age where we could speak to whomever we wanted, buy whatever we wanted, think whatever we wanted, go wherever we wanted, feel whatever we wanted without those thoughts, words and activities being tracked, processed and stored by corporate giants, sold to government agencies, and used against us by militarized police with their army of futuristic technologies.

Tread cautiously: as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People (https://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-America-War-American-People/dp/1590795229/) and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries (https://www.amazon.com/Erik-Blair-Diaries-Battlefield-Dead/dp/1954968027/), 1984 has become an operation manual for the omnipresent, modern-day AI surveillance state.
Without constitutional protections in place to guard against encroachments on our rights when power, AI technology and militaristic governance converge, it won’t be long before Philip K. Dick’s rules for survival become our governing reality: “If, as it seems, we are in the process of becoming a totalitarian society in which the state apparatus is all-powerful, the ethics most important for the survival of the true, free, human individual would be: cheat, lie, evade, fake it, be elsewhere, forge documents, build improved electronic gadgets in your garage that’ll outwit the gadgets used by the authorities (https://philipdick.com/resources/articles/canada-gains-a-noted-science-fiction-writer/).”
