Food banks and pantries across the country are facing a steep drop-off in the bread and butter of their operations: food donated by supermarkets and farms.

In an average month, Brian Barks, the CEO of Food Bank for the Heartland, spends about $73,000 buying food to distribute to people in need across Nebraska and western Iowa.

Last month, as the coronavirus was spreading across the U.S., he spent $675,000.

That's a nearly tenfold increase, because Food Bank for the Heartland, like food banks and pantries across the country, is facing a steep drop-off in the bread and butter of its operations: food donated by supermarkets and farms.

"The grocery stores, as we've seen across the country, the shelves are getting bare," Barks said. "They don't have extra to hand out to food banks. And what we're anticipating is that those donations will drop to zero."

When the national nonprofit Feeding America surveyed its affiliated food banks in mid-March, 92 percent said they were seeing increased need, while 64 percent said food donations had declined.

As a result, Barks and other food bank directors are facing a dual challenge in the era of COVID-19: drastically overhaul the way they do business — with fewer volunteers and less person-to-person contact — while trying to feed a surge of Americans newly facing food insecurity because of the virus.

At times, the two goals can seem diametrically opposed.

"One of the huge concerns that we have here," Barks said, "is that many of the pantries that receive food from food banks are operated by seniors. And when those seniors say, 'You know what? I'm not going to risk it anymore,' those pantries close. Then what do you do? That is where approximately 70 percent of our food goes, through a network of pantries."

To provide food in the age of social distancing, many food banks and pantries have pivoted to low-contact, drive-thru food distribution.

At Feeding San Diego's emergency drive-thru distribution Saturday, vehicles lined up 14 deep in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot for boxes filled with produce and nonperishable food. About 1,200 vehicles were served until the food bank ran out in just under an hour.

"We're seeing as much as a 40 percent to 50 percent increase in demand at individual distribution locations," CEO Vince Hall said. "Many of the people that we're seeing have never before sought food assistance. Many of them aren't even sure what the process is. We get lots of very fundamental questions: 'Do I qualify? Is there somebody more deserving than me?'"

Hall said he, too, is being forced to rely on purchased food more than ever. "We usually rescue about 12 million pounds of food per year from grocery stores across our county," he said. "Well, consumer demand has depleted those grocery stores. And now there is almost nothing left for us to rescue off the loading dock."

In the last 2½ weeks, Feeding San Diego has bought 36 truckloads of food. That's more than the food bank normally purchases in a year.

"Whatever constellation of economic factors comes to bear on them, they went from having a middle-class life to being in need of hunger relief services in a snap of a finger," Hall said. "And so that is all creating complex challenges for the food distribution system."

Around the country, food banks and pantries have taken on the challenge in different ways.

In New York City, the nonprofit food rescue organization City Harvest said 82 of the food programs it delivers to have shut down because of precautions or lack of staffing. Drive-thru distribution isn't an option for most New Yorkers, making it even harder than usual to find food assistance in a city where 2.5 million people struggled to make ends meet even before COVID-19 arrived.

To help offset the closings of other programs, City Harvest is continuing to run its "mobile markets" across the city, allowing New Yorkers in need to pick up produce on foot. The nonprofit said it's seeing a 30 percent uptick in attendance at those markets.

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a Meals on Wheels program that delivers to shut-ins has switched from delivering hot meals Monday through Friday to delivering frozen meals once a week.

And at the Harrison Food Bank in Harrison, Maine, where a large elderly population raises the stakes, volunteers and staff members drive more than 200 miles a day, six days a week, picking up food from pantries that have shuttered and crisscrossing the state to amass enough food to feed their community.

Like dozens of other food banks and pantries nationally, Hall's food bank in San Diego and Barks' food bank in Omaha are relying on skeleton crews of staff members and experienced volunteers for safety while trying to meet the unprecedented need.

"I've never been involved in anything so fluid in my life," said Barks, whose staff in Nebraska has a backlog of food assistance applications to process under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. "The goalposts seem to change, not just by the day but by the hour. And when you're in the business of trying to feed people who need food, it's really, really challenging."

At the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, volunteer staff members have also been pulled back, but the National Guard stepped in to provide emergency assistance.

"Now, as opposed to packing 2,000 boxes a day, with their help we're packing 3,000 emergency food boxes a day," CEO Lisa Scales said.

On Monday afternoon, at one of its drive-thru distribution operations, over 15,785 pounds of food were handed out every hour. The line of vehicles wrapped down a nearby highway and stretched over 2 miles long.

"We've been in operation for almost 40 years, and this is the most significant increase in need in a short of period that I've experienced. And I've been in food banking for 25 years. The vast majority of people we're serving these past several weeks are people who are newly unemployed," Scales said.

Like the organizations in Nebraska and San Diego, the food bank in Pittsburgh is expending vast resources to fill the gap left by donated and rescued food. Scales has spent $1.7 million on nonperishable food for March and April, up from $600,000 during the same months last year. But she's also having difficulty sourcing that food, as food banks, supermarkets and other businesses all vie for the same products.

"Just this week, we had four of our food orders canceled," Scales said. "And we heard that another four of our food orders are being shorted, which means that we're receiving less than what we were told we would get...The food is being bought out from under us by other retail businesses that are willing to pay a higher price."

Still, Scales is dogged in her insistence that the food bank will find a way. To her, the alternative isn't acceptable.

"It's what keeps me up at night," she said.

I see what Trump is doing to raise oil prices, he wants to make it profitable for US companies to produce oil/gas, etc., keep the millions of jobs in the oil industry and to keep the US energy independent. The US can't be energy independent without the industry.

If we are unable to produce oil at a profit, we will go back to relying on foreign oil producers, our industry will collapse, millions of US citizens will lose very good paying jobs. What good is that?
What's the alternative?

I believe we are all concerned in getting rid of corruption in government. Yet Trump done nothing to clean out the corruption in the DOJ or the FBI both of which are in the Executive Branch. None of the criminals in government have been indicted in 3 years. Shutting down private enterprise and signing an unconstitutional 3+ trillion dollar bailout for his corporate Wall Street and banking sector buddies while destroying the entire middle class by putting small businesses into bankruptcy which in turn puts the employees of those small businesses out of work isn't making America great again. I wasn't around for the last depression but am old enough to have listened to those who were while I was growing up. I believe what is sin store for us will make the Great Depression look like a picnic.

What good is being energy independent if there is no one employed to buy his higher priced fuels or pay for plane tickets to support the airlines. They can't buy groceries now soon they will have their automobiles and homes repossessed. The family farmers and bankrupt small businesses won't be returning to fuel the economy. It will be Amazon.con & Walmart and manufacturing will still be done in China. Manual jobs will be done by robots.

We are seeing the treasury being looted as we sit and watch.. Most on this forum have known this day was coming. All we can do is watch and try to be the leaders our local communities will need for defense, agriculture, trade etc. I've taken this time to prep as best I can, read as much as I could on anything I felt would be of use in a collapse scenario.

That does include Sun Tzu's art of war, this book that most only quote and never read is going to be a huge resource in the immediate future. Whether political or confrontational it applies in a lot of areas of life.

Yup, and I'm NOT SURPRISED!!! This government is completely CORRUPT!! Nothing but in your face tyrannical lawlessness--nothing happens to the criminals in govt.!!! They get away with all of their crimes, and they are constantly plotting against us. I truly don't know what we're supposed to do....Meanwhile, I live in a horrible state with a bunch of sheep who are all too eager to snitch on somebody for violating proper social distance (!!!!)....unbelievable that this is what has become of this country....I wonder how people are going to act on the 4th of July--are we still going to be under house arrest with no rights or freedom? Yes, I knew this day was coming--first woke up to the whole coming collapse back in '08, and I made major changes (got out of the DC area where all the criminals were!!!), and started prepping (sort of)--I have so much more to do, have to learn how to grow food when all I've ever done is kill houseplants.

I was fortunate enough to grow up on a farm. So growing food is easy if you have the right soil. Sandy soil really isn't all that good for growing anything outside of blueberries. Dark soil, dark brown / almost black is typically the best. Now that I am in the south, its pretty much all red clay here. Which seems to do alright but is a little acidic which can be neutralized with lime.

There is a lot of information you can read and I'm sure anyone here will help answer any questions you might have.

I've taken over 2 years worth of self defense training, hand to hand weapons fighting as well as weapons disarming. I hope I NEVER have to use it, but its good knowing I'm capable if I'm ever in that situation.

Just buy a weapon and do not carry it. I don't believe you need a permit to purchase a weapon, but to carry it. But NJ is a little "different" compared to other states when it comes to the 2nd amendment.

I never understood the concept of asking permission to do what is already an enshrined right. Governments busy themselves by plotting the removal of rights.

When he says "This was artificially induced. They said close it down." these are very important statements. He is no doubt talking about the lockdown of society; is he also talking about the virus? The virus is irrelevant because it is not the problem we are facing. The real problem we are facing is the destruction of our 'livelihoods' (if you aren't sure, look up the definition of livelihood) from this action of 'closing it down'. The second statement is very important too. 'They' said close it down. Who are 'they' and how is it that 'they' have the power to tell the president to shut down the country? Why didn't 'they' take actions that were timely? This guy is a freakin' idiot. He is a bumbling fool that has taken courses in public speaking and isn't even very good at it. I'm not arguing for Hillary or any other beasts the system has ready for any office. Is he better? Maybe, but we would be in better shape if we had a rock sitting in the oval office; a rock that says nothing and does nothing. If we had a rock for president, at least we would all realize that it is up to us, not politicians who answer to 'them', to make our decisions and take care of our 'livelihoods'. If you are not angry somewhere within your being, you are either not human or you are not intelligent.

I talk to the militia and many of them feel that this shutdown is somehow associated with a 'clean-up' of bad guys, a draining of the swamp if you will. The bad guys are being feted not vetted or indicted.

How much clearer does it need to be for those who are on the Trump Train? Trump is one of 'them'. He is a mere underling however. This is why he jumps when his masters speak. He has been put in place to destroy us. I said years ago that he was an actor, a reality TV star, a professional bankruptee, the perfect person to 'preside' over the intentional bankrupting of our nation. Most people fail to realize that when the elite (Trump is one of 'them') go bankrupt, it is not the same as when you or I do. It is not the last act of a failing enterprise or a broken and desperate person to protect their very existence; it is the 'first' act of a criminal corporation that has purposefully taken huge amounts of money and resources and misappropriated them. It is how 'they' hide their trail and grease each-others palms. Plain and simple, it is how they do business.

I believe there is a 'doglike' aspect to many people. I admire and love dogs, as I do people, but people should realize that we have elected another person to be our servant and not our master and this 'servant' is not to be given an adulatory stature. 'They' count on this adulation and use it every time to our detriment.

Deliberately destroying the economy, causing millions to lose their jobs and businesses, depriving us of our rights and freedom, is to protect us??? And I've been seeing comments that "Trump is taking down the satanic pedophiles who run the world" and "rescuing kids from DUMBs"!?!?! Where's the evidence of that? It seems like he has lost control of his own administration. He's done a lot of 180s on issues--reminds me of him on the campaign trail there was talk about setting up a vaccine safety commission w/RFK Jr. in charge, and then that seemed to go away. I have a question...
Since we know now Trump is just one of them, that Trump has spent his whole life building on and promoting his family's name, is all just a sham.

Going from my idealogical idea that the government follow the Constitution and We The People do our civic duty and enforce the Constitution to reality, well the general government of the United States known as the Federal Government has evolved into a monstrosity actually controlled by unelected bureaucrats and an entrenched military-industrial organization that far is beyond the control of Congress or the President.

Since Congress has passed their workload off onto this army of unelected 3 letter agencies they are free to spend the majority of their time raising campaign funds an campaigning for re-election. No matter who is elected Congress will enact legislation favorable to the highest bidder and the President will obligingly sign it into law Constitution be damned as just happened with the Care Act.

The progressives gained control of Congress sometime between the War Between the States and the turn if the 20th century and viola, we got the Federal Reserve Act, repeal of the 17th Amendment then the engineered Great depression Churchill and Roosevelt’s World War II then came Truman’s reorganization of the government and U.S. court system the BLM created by merging the General Land Office with the National Grazing Service and a host of others. Somewhere in that timeframe State sovereignty was overlaid by Federal Districts filled with U.S. Citizens subject to the jurisdiction of Washington D.C..

Trump nor any other person is not capable of undoing all the 150+ years of corruption embedded in the government of United States today.

CBS News reporter Catherine Herridge obtained an April 2 letter responding to Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley over four key footnotes in IG Horowitz’s report.

As TGP previously reported, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee Ron Johnson and Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Chuck Grassley Tuesday sent a letter to Attorney General Bill Barr asking him to declassify four footnotes in Horowitz’s report on FISA abuse.

The Senators stated that the classified footnotes contradict what is publicly available in Horowitz’s report related to Crossfire Hurricane, the CI investigation opened into Trump’s campaign in July of 2016.

Grassley and Johnson wrote, “The American people have a right to know what is contained within these four footnotes and, without that knowledge, they will not have a full picture as to what happened during the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.”

The DOJ declassified 3 footnotes with minimal redactions and kept the fourth footnote completely blacked out citing, “unique and significant concerns. The redacted information refers to information received by a member of the Crossfire Hurricane team regarding possible previous attempts by a foreign government to penetrate and research a company or individuals associated with Christopher Steele,” Herridge reported.

One declassified footnote revealed Comey’s FBI knew the Hillary Clinton-funded dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele was bogus Russian disinformation — but they used it anyway to spy on Trump’s campaign.

“The (redacted) stated that it did not have high confidence in this subset of Steele’s reporting and ASSESSED that the referenced subset was part of a Russian disinformation campaign to denigrate US foreign relations” — Catherine Herridge said.
