An official FBI Twitter account (https://twitter.com/FBIRecordsVault/status/1296144912497352705) published a copy of the Protocols of Learned Elders of Zion Wednesday, generating criticism for possibly legitimizing the famous anti-Semitic text by failing to include context.

The FBI Records Vault, which tweeted out only the label “Protocols of Learned Elders of Zion” and a link to the historical document, describes itself as the “FOIA Library, containing 6,700 documents and other media that have been scanned from paper into digital copies so you can read them in the comfort of your home or office.”

The vault’s account also tweeted out other, more mundane documents Wednesday using the same format, making it possible that this account is run by a bot that randomly releases documents.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the tweet had generated more than 3,000 likes, 4,600 retweets and 1,400 comments.

The text is “a classic in paranoid, racist literature” that “has been heralded by anti-Semites as proof that Jews are plotting to take over the world,” according to the Anti-Defamation League (https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounders/a-hoax-of-hate-the-protocols-of-the-learned-elders-of-zion).

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

For more than a century, the fabricated text “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion” has advanced a persistent anti-Semitic trope: that Jews are plotting to take over the world. From Hitler to Henry Ford, rabid anti-Semites have long shared the notorious text (https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/2006/04/22/protocols-of-zion-the-life-of-a-fraud-38/572ec583-3541-4524-8053-ef0603feac5d/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2).

On Wednesday, an FBI Twitter account did the same. An account called FBI Records Vault tweeted (https://twitter.com/FBIRecordsVault/status/1296144912497352705) out a link to a PDF containing the anti-Semitic tome as well as FBI documents related to it, with no other context, leaving critics baffled and outraged.

The FBI later apologized and clarified the account is automated and sends links to records that have been made public via Freedom of Information Act requests.

“Earlier today FOIA materials were posted to the FBI’s Vault and FOIA Twitter account via an automated process without further outlining the context of the documents,” the tweet said (https://twitter.com/FBIRecordsVault/status/1296219898797056001). “We regret that this release may have inadvertently caused distress among the communities we serve.”

But outcry over the tweet continued after the mea culpa. In a statement, the Anti-Defamation League condemned the FBI for not noting that the documents are “virulently anti-Semitic.”

“We have already received reports from many in the American Jewish community who are hurt by the irresponsible way this document was released,” the statement said. “We call on the FBI to correct this mistake now, and do better in the future.”
