How are you? I was in Turkey last 6 weeks and for some reason they have banned this site there. Did you miss me?

Welcome back! How was Turkey? When Sibel Edmonds was there, she said it was 24/7 lockdown and she was convinced they were going to force the vaccine on the people.

Good to see you back Bro. Do you guys do any sort of Thanksgiving type thing in Sweden? Funny thing I read: It seems that in Turkey they call turkeys 'American Birds'. How is your place coming along in Turkey? Did you get the solar installation complete? I seem to remember you saying it was something you were going for.

No lockdown now, you have to wear a mask outside and in shops, but Turks have a propensity to flaunt rules. I myself worked close contact with patients. Now I have a bit of soureness in throat. I think I already had the virus at end of March with main symptom shortness of breath some dry cough and light fever, I should get thoroughly immunized with a second bout. No fucker is going to poke me with toxic needle.

No thanksgiving in Sweden. In turkey they call them ”hindi” which implies that they think they come from India. In Sweden we call them ”Kalkon” which I recently learned is derived from German ”Kalikot hühne” or chicken from Calcutta... Perhaps in India they call then American bird?

I did get the solar panel system up and running, but I will complement with 4 more panels for morning and evening sun and a 1000 watt wind turbine

Can you recommend any literature to educate oneself on solar installation? I want to do it but I am like a babe in the woods.

Not really, but there really isn’t that much to it. The simplest system is a 12 volt system, where you have a solar panel which supplies a car or a motorcycle battery via a controller, and then you take the power you need from the battery. A slightly more complicated system is where you connect the battery to an inverter which takes the dc current from the battery and makes it alternating current to 60/50 hz and 110/230 volts. The inverter is a bit noisy because it has a fan and it uses a bit of power itself. You can have a square wave inverter which works fine for lamps or electronic equipment, but if you want to run an electrical engine like a compressor fridge/freezer or a pump its preferable to use a true sine wave inverter which are more expensive. Then the batteries you can use a normal car lead acid battery, but they would probably last shorter. Then you have a bit more expensive gel deep cycle batteries that will last more than 5 years perhaps 10 years depending on your use, and then you have lithium ion batteries that cost about double they are smaller and will probably last 10 years or more.

Welcome back Neuro! Good summary on 12 volt solar systems. I just did a battery inverter/charger install, and will be adding close to 1300 watts of solar. With solar, the charge controller is the "brains", so it's worth getting a good one to maximize your solar. The technology for charge controllers keeps getting better. I have 2, and can access them independently through bluetooth on my phone. I could be sitting here typing and look at how many amps or watts they are putting out.

Neuro, the batteries I went with are more expensive, but have a very long lifespan. They are the closest thing to lithium ion you can get without all the BMS bullshit. They are called Firefly batteries. I went with 4 group 31's for my house bank, giving me around 475 amp hours total. But, with the fireflies, I can discharge them past 50% without causing sulfation damaging them like lead acid, gels. Plus, they operate fine in a partial state of discharge, like lithium does. That's the killer of batteries, not getting a full life cycle charge. With the Firefly batteries, they are the best for off grid solar applications you can get (other than lithium).

EDIT: also keep in mind that with lithium, an EMP will kill the battery dead because of the battery management computer systems in them.

Hi Neuro,

What's the Euroword on the street, Or is there any street at all?

Sweden is fairly ok. But lots of Euro countries has hard commie fascist police state lockdowns. Like France people are allowed out for 1 hour within 1 km of home. Even more scary is the number of sheeple that actually support this Orwellian nightmare for something they can’t even see. How is synagogue of satan in Costa Rica doing?

They've decimated the tourist industry here, require person to purchase .gov insurance when visiting.

Local city enconomy still is chugging somehow, they have stupid ordinance like 1 day a week certain Lic. plate #s are not to be seen on roads, parks and community centers still 50% capacity.

The people are complacent, though are requesting tax refunds for their inconvenince.

My German buddy returned here for those reasons you stated, he was also involved in large entertainment functions so was furloughed there.

Woodman, one thing you can do to start, is find out how many watt hours per day you'll need to run everything you want. That will give you an idea on how much solar you'll need. There's a device called the kill a watt meter. If you plug in a freezer into the device, and let it run for 24 hours, it will tell you exactly how many watts the freezer is actually using. Do that with everything you want to run off grid, and you can build a system to fit.

Another good idea is to run a deep chest freezer only in daytime and do things like washing machine dish washer only on sunny days a few hours before sunset, so you can limit battery capacity needs. Small thoughtfull adjustments in lifestyle which can reduce your needs a lot.

Small thoughtfull adjustments in lifestyle which can reduce your needs a lot.The way I conserve is to have 24VDC thruout the house. I have a 24 VDC upright fridge and two Sundazer 24 VDC chest freezers. They use practically no power at all. The inverter, which robs 30 watts when it's on, is in "standby" 95% of the time. Indoor lighting is 24 VDC, also have 120 VAC lighting but rarely use it. My well pump is run off the inverter 240 VAC. I only run it on sunny days. It fills a cistern uphill and gravity feeds back down as needed. I have wood heat, propane stove, water heater and clothes dryer. Life is great.

I was suspicious of the inverter using a lot as it is quite loud (the cooling fan) and emitts quite a lot of heat. 30 Watts x 24 h is 0.72 kWh, which is more than the fridge and deep chest freezer I have use together in 24h, normally, at least according to the specifications... How big is your inverter? Mine has a 5 kW capacity...

I like your setup Hoarder, especially the sundazer freezers. I've been wanting one for awhile, but can't seem to find a place to fit it. I ended up recently ordering an iceco 12v freezer, which gets good reviews as well. It sips energy at 5 amps 12v when running, and has a very good compressor. I am hoping once down to temp it will use 30 amp hours a day. Not quite as good per the size as the Sundazer, but hopefully pretty close.

I have a 2000 watt inverter, that automatically switches on if I loose power. My water heater on board is new, 12 gallons, it runs on 120 but only has a 750 watt element. If I run it for 15 minutes in the morning on the inverter, I can have hot water all day. There's a diesel fireplace onboard, and also an espar diesel forced heater 12 volt. The espar's not working, missing the thermostat, but hopefully it would work if I get to installing a new thermostat. The espar is supposed to burn about 1 gallon of diesel a day, and it's the one they have in a lot of the big rigs. The diesel fireplace is gravity fed from a 5 gallon tank.

Hmm....the inverter probably spikes upon start up, but that seems high for constant running. I really don't know how much my inverter robs, but I am going to try and find out.

How big is your inverter? Mine has a 5 kW capacity...Mine is 4000 watts. I think over 90% of the off grid systems are set up to have the inverter working 24/7. It makes a simpler system. The problem is that there is no solar at night or when there is snow on the panels and the batteries drain too fast. One solution is to just have a larger battery bank. Lots of trade offs.
The DC fridges and freezers are much more efficient than anything you can buy that's 120VAC. I had a 500 watt system (also dual voltage) in my first cabin for a few years and it ran my upright fridge and chest freezer as well as the computer and all the lights in the house. I had to run the generator when I used the blender, washer or vacuum.

Costa Rica did not have any shipping container boats arriving at all from China for the last month. Me thinks it'd be better if team Biden does run the world, cause the next four years will make anyone look horrible.

Ps. What to do in Turkey with power or electricity anyway, you gotta casino there or something?
