Interesting book. I am only part way through it but it makes some sense. I did watch him discuss the topic on YouTube though.

Prevailing wisdom is that overgrazing destroys grasslands and tends to produce deserts. This is false. Herds used to be much greater in size but would move more freely. Their hooves would break the crust, produce fresh seedlings and allow water to be retained.
The problem with domestic livestock is the management.
I suppose an analogy could be drawn between desertification and the type of society the U.S. has evolved into. Properly managed society would be much different.
