All of the “no” votes came from Republicans. I don’t know if this is the Ron Paul effect or the Donald Trump effect or some combination of things, but a decent segment of the Republican Party has turned towards being less interventionist in terms of foreign policy.

Unfortunately, it has gone the other way with the Democrats. It is especially disappointing to see someone like Barbara Lee – the only dissenting vote in approving the use of force in Afghanistan in 2001 – support this spending bill that funds the military industrial complex and will likely serve to only prolong the war in Ukraine.

Even if the U.S. government hadn’t helped fund and plan the coup in Ukraine in 2014, and even if the Ukrainian-backed militias hadn’t been slaughtering innocent ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine over the last 8 years, and even if the U.S. wasn’t entertaining the idea of admitting Ukraine into NATO and placing missiles on Russia’s doorstep, it still wouldn’t be an excuse to intervene in the matter in Ukraine.

Again, it will only serve to prolong the conflict there. If anything, it will lead to more deaths, especially on the Ukrainian side.

If anyone in the United States or anywhere else wants to voluntarily donate their time or money to the cause of helping Ukrainians, they should be free to do so. But we should not be forced through taxation and inflation to fund this.

Thomas Massie tweeted: “Counting last night’s rushed vote, Congress has now spent more money on Ukraine in six months than we spend on all US roads and bridges in a year.”

Donald Trump Jr. tweeted: “You can’t find baby formula in the United States right now but Congress is voting today to send $40 billion to Ukraine. Let’s put America First for a change.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is heavily demonized by the establishment, pointed out something similar in her Twitter feed. She was arguing with another Republican in the House, Dan Crenshaw. The establishment won’t directly admit this, but they especially despise Greene because she goes against the establishment narrative, and she isn’t a war hawk.

The establishment media is calling this Ukraine spending a bipartisan effort. On this, they are mostly correct. As I like to say, whenever you hear that something is bipartisan, hold on to your wallet.

So while gas prices are hitting all-time highs and inflation is vastly outpacing wages, the American taxpayer is being forced to send funds to Ukraine and the military-industrial complex.

The establishment media, of course, supports this. They are shills for the regime. There are a few exceptions on Fox News like Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham, but almost everybody else talks as though there could be no legitimate reason to oppose this spending on Ukraine.

This is actually a winning issue for Republicans who are willing to stand against the war hawks. Most Americans don’t want to see people getting killed in Ukraine, but it also isn’t on their priority list of issues and they intuitively understand that more government spending won’t help anyway.

The Ukrainian shelling began late morning, resumed in the afternoon, and continued heavily for another two hours in the evening, a deafening series of blasts throughout the city, terrorizing residents and targeting apartment buildings, civilian infrastructure, industrial buildings, a gas station, hospitals, schools and a kindergarten.

Locals say this was some of the heaviest bombing of Donetsk since 2014.One of the hospitals targeted was a busy maternity hospital with dozens of patients inside, an Uragan MLRS rocket going through the roof. Thankfully, they had taken shelter in the basement when the shelling started earlier in the day, so none of the women were killed as they might have been if in the delivery, gynecology or other top floor departments. Even now, three days after the June 13 bombings, there is little mention of the maternity hospital or even of Donetsk itself being bombed by Ukraine.

Keep in mind this is the same western corporate-owned media that shrieked for weeks in March that Russia had bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol, killing three. The reality emerged that Ukrainian Nazi Azov forces had expelled the hospital staff in late February (so, prior to the alleged air strike), militarized the hospital, and staged a hoax, including setting off explosives to incriminate Russia.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called for a fight against rising Muslim and left-wing anti-Semitism in Europe, hours after the government published a report that said the far-right posed the greatest threat to Jews on the continent.

Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on International Holocaust Memorial Day, Netanyahu said that right-wing anti-Semitism in Europe was well established, but that a recent rise in anti-Zionism was driving anti-Jewish and anti-Israel sentiment across the continent.

“On Friday, vandals smashed the monument to the Jews of Thessaloniki who perished in the Holocaust. I strongly condemn this, and call on the international community to act against emerging anti-Semitism, especially the emerging anti-Semitism in Europe,” the prime minister said, according to remarks released by his office.

“Anti-Semitism from the right is not a new phenomenon there. What is new in Europe is the combination of Islamic anti-Semitism and the anti-Semitism of the extreme left, which includes anti-Zionism, such as has recently occurred in Great Britain and in Ireland,” he said. “What a disgrace.”

Last week, the Foreign Ministry reprimanded Ireland’s envoy to Israel following the advancement of a “scandalous” bill criminalizing Israeli products from areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War.

The prime minister’s remarks were at odds with a report on anti-Semitism released by the Diaspora Affairs Ministry earlier on Sunday, which showed a worldwide increase in attacks against Jews last year, and the highest number of fatalities in anti-Semitic attacks around the world in 25 years.

“In contrast to previous years, when Islamist anti-Semitism was the main and most dangerous threat to Jewish communities, in 2018 there has been a turnaround and now anti-Semitic incidents emanating from the far-right are the main and most dangerous threat to Jewish communities, especially in the United States and Europe,” the report said.

The physical violence in 2018 was led by neo-Nazis and white supremacists, the ministry added.

Netanyahu, who also holds the position of foreign minister, has come under criticism for developing ties with far-right European governments and parties.

Last year, Conference of European Rabbis president Pinchas Goldschmidt called on Israel to end its engagement with far-right parties in Europe, warning lawmakers at a meeting at the Knesset that cozying up to nationalist groups in Europe was putting local Jewish communities at risk.

“It is not worth a short-term endorsement or for Israel to receive political support, only to put the Jewish community at risk,” Goldschmidt said.

U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called Russian President Vladimir Putin the “grand godfather of this global brand of extreme nationalism,” speaking at a campaign event in Nevada.

The former U.S. Secretary of State devoted her speech to so-called “alternative right” ideology and the danger of rightist political forces seizing power.

She was criticizing her Republican opponent Donald Trump for supporting Putin's policy: “He talks casually of abandoning our NATO allies, recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and of giving the Kremlin a free hand in Eastern Europe more generally. American presidents from Truman to Reagan have rejected the kind of approach Trump is taking on Russia.”

The U.S. media has long connected Trump’s campaign to the Kremlin, pointing to his pro-Putin advisers and Russian business ties. Several of Trump’s advisers were reported to be sympathetic to the Kremlin, and his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort served as an adviser to Russian-backed former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Putin himself has been forthright in his praise of the Republican candidate.

"Fear has won the election," wrote the Spanish paper El País last Wednesday after Israeli voters once again made the right-wing Likud the country's strongest political party. "In Israel, fear is king and the one occupying the throne is called Netanyahu." Other papers across the continent were equally disheartened. "Netanyahu's victory pushes a dignified settlement of the Palestinian conflict far into the future," wrote Le Monde. In Germany, Tagesspiegel wrote: "At the end of the tunnel, only a tunnel can be seen."

But one growing faction in Europe is welcoming Benjamin Netanyahu and his re-election with open arms. On the ultra-conservative periphery, among the xenophobic, nativist fringe, right-wing populists are unabashedly rejoicing. For them, Europe is engaged in a battle against encroaching Islam – and the hardliner Netanyahu, they believe, is doing yeoman's work on the front lines. "Benjamin Netanyahu's victory is a good thing for several reasons," Geert Wilders, the vociferous anti-Islam incendiary from the Netherlands, said in an emailed statement. "We share his criticism of Iran . . . and his opposition to a Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria."

"We are very happy," agrees Filip Dewinter, a leading member of Belgian right-wing party Vlaams Belang. "It is a good thing for Israel, but also good for right-wing parties in Europe because he understands that the first danger for Europe is Islamisation." David Lasar, a foreign policy co-ordinator for the Austrian Freedom Party, echoed that sentiment. "For sure, I am very happy," says Lasar, who has worked hard in recent years to develop ties with staunchly conservative parties overseas. "It is a very important step that Netanyahu has won the election."

From the perspective of a European chauvinistic periphery that has increasingly been striving for mainstream legitimacy in the recent past, the enthusiasm is understandable. As groups like the Austrian Freedom Party, France's Front National and the Swedish Democrats have long histories of anti-Semitism, recent years have seen them attempting to refocus their enmity on Islam and Islamists. With that shift has come a recognition that Israeli conservatives, with their rejection of a Palestinian state and hardline approach to Islamism, are their natural allies.

The Likud party has been cautiously returning the admiration. Many Israeli conservatives feel that the political mainstream in Europe has become increasingly antagonistic toward Israel in recent years. They point to Sweden's official recognition of Palestine and to the fact that other EU countries have discussed doing the same. European reaction to Operation Protective Edge, which saw the Israeli military invade the Gaza Strip last summer, was likewise critical. "A part of the centre-Left still sympathises with us," says Michael Kleiner, a senior Likud member. "But the younger generation is more guided by Muslim votes. Left-wing parties are tending more and more to compromise between moral values and the need to be nice to the Muslims."

Sentiments like that are music to the ears of European right-wing parties. "For me, Netanyahu is quite a positive choice," says Aymeric Chauprade, a member of European Parliament for Front National. "He is very strong against terror and against Islamists." Kent Ekeroth, a Swedish parliamentarian with the right-wing Swedish Democrats, agrees: "It is far better that Likud won," he says. "The Left doesn't take the security situation seriously and, because of that, they are far more likely to appease the Arabs."

Ekeroth was careful to insist that he wasn't speaking on behalf of his party. But his message chimes with the increasing number of right-wing populist pilgrims heading to Israel for talks with West Bank settlers, Likud parliamentarians and other conservative leaders. Ekeroth, Dewinter and Lasar have all made the trip, as have Austrian Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache and Wilders. Even Front National leader Marine Le Pen, whose father and party founder Jean-Marie was considered vehemently anti-Semitic, has expressed interest in visiting the country.

Right-wingers are attracted to Israel for other reasons. Ties with the country serve to distance the populist Right from neo-Nazi groups. And that differentiation could be crucial to the parties' successes at the ballot box.

In a January survey, the Austrian Freedom Party came in first place with 28% support. The Swedish Democrats polled close to 18% last December. "The Swedish Democrats and the Austrian Freedom Party have very questionable pasts. They are still perceived as racists and anti-Semitic by many," says Yehuda Ben-Hur Levy, a visiting fellow at the Centre for European Reform and a long-time observer of the European far Right. "This is to some extent a way to legitimate themselves – saying, 'If we go to Israel, you can't really claim that we are anti-Semitic'."

Thus far, the right wingers' visits to Israel have not been given the official stamp of approval. While delegates have often been received by parliamentarians acting independently, they have never been received by a Foreign Ministry delegation or given an official government welcome. But there is some hope on the right that Netanyahu's re-election may change that. "The understanding between right-wing parties and Israel can only get better under Netanyahu," says Dewinter of Vlaams Belang. The Austrian press even speculated in December that Strache might soon receive an official invitation.

Such optimism may not be misplaced. Many conservatives in Israel now see the European right wing as being the only reliable partner on a continent where, they say, anti-Semitism has become rooted in the political mainstream. Right-wing parties, says Kleiner of Likud, "are better at recognising the real danger that Europe is facing from the Muslims . . . . They are less naive than the Left."

While not explicitly embracing the Right, Netanyahu has been vociferous in his criticism of growing anti-Semitism in Europe, particularly in the wake of the January attacks in Paris and Copenhagen. He urged European Jews to emigrate to Israel and intimated he saw Europe as an unreliable trading partner: "Western Europe is undergoing a wave of Islamisation, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. We would like to ensure the state of Israel will have varied markets around the world."

Such comments endear Netanyahu to the Right. "I am quite happy," says Fiorello Provera, a senior member of the Italian right-wing party Lega Nord and a former European parliamentarian. "I think that Netanyahu is the right man for the difficult situation." Provera then made a plea for the Israeli prime minister to not completely turn his back on the continent. "Since the left has abandoned Israel," he said, "what is left for Israel are the right-wing parties of Europe."

Good evening! I would like to welcome everyone here tonight to the Oxford University Chabad Society’s second Joseph Graham memorial lecture. Tonight’s lecture is hosted in memory of Joseph Graham, the grandfather of Elliot Shear. We are very grateful to Elliot and his parents for joining us tonight and for sponsoring tonight’s lecture.

Joseph Graham is someone who came to England from Germany in 1939, leaving behind his entire family who perished in the Holocaust. This is part of a series of lectures we host in memory of people who died in the Holocaust and it is in these lectures and the general perpetuation of Jewish life that the memory of these people live on and we dedicate tonight’s lecture to Joseph Graham.

Tonight’s lecture will be delivered by Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar. We are honoured to be hosting him and we thank him for coming out to Oxford despite his extremely busy schedule. His lecture is the second Joseph Graham memorial lecture which follows the previous lecture given by former Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau.

Tonight we are also honoured to be hosting the Honourable Nathaniel Rothschild, who is here with us tonight as Guest of Honour. We thank him very much for coming.

We are also honoured to be hosting the Head of the Russian Studies Centre at St Antony’s College, Professor of Russian Studies at Oxford University, Professor Robert Service.

We are also hosting the Honourable president of the Oxford University Chabad Society, Melissa Friedman, and all the esteemed guests who are with us tonight.

The subject of tonight’s lecture is “Jewish life in Russia: Yesterday and Today”. We will proceed with an introduction by Professor of Russian Studies, Professor Robert Service, who has agreed to offer some introductory remarks on behalf of the university.

It is a great pleasure to have been invited to help to introduce Chief Rabbi of Russia Rabbi Berel Lazar.

It is impossible to understand the history of Russia, the USSR and Russia again, without understanding the relation between Russians and Jews, Russians and Ukrainians and Ukrainians and Jews. It was complex and tormented. For most of the 20th century it was extremely tormented.

Often we think of the years of the 1930’s as being the nadir of Jewish religious life, Christian religious life, Muslim religious life and all religious life. But in fact, one of the greatest persecutors of religious faith in the USSR was the successor to Stalin, namely Nikita Khrushchev.

In other words, the decades of religious persecution, the decades in attempt to eradicate religious belief, religious organisation, religious practice, were very long indeed and then vastly outlived Joseph Stalin.

We are talking about a theme that is now possible to talk of as historical. There is now something like religious tolerance in Russia but it is contested religious tolerance in Russia. It is not completely simple matter to be a religious believer in the Russian federation today. All sorts of political, cultural, social, as well as religious questions are involved. It gives me really much pleasure in introducing the speaker tonight. He is Chief Rabbi of Russia, recognised by President Vladimir Putin. It is a great honour to have the pleasure to help introduce Rabbi Lazar, our speaker, tonight.

My only qualification for speaking tonight is that I am very good friends with Rabbi Lazar. I thank Elliot Shear for sponsoring this event and I thank my friend and business partner David Slager for sponsoring this centre and making it a reality.

I have been going to Russia since 1992, when I was still a student in Oxford. When I began visiting Russia regularly around 2001, I didn’t have much idea about the resurgence of Jewish life. However, I met Rabbi Lazar in Switzerland at the World Economic Forum in Davos and I was struck by watching this figure and we eventually connected and started talking, and from there began a friendship and I started visiting his centre in Russia, many times a year.

For me it was an incredible experience to watch it grow and his efforts in this. It has over 140,000 members, serves over 1,000 meals a day and helps 15,000 elderly people. It is a place where Jews and non-Jews visit. It has a synagogue and swimming pool and there is work a foot to build a Jewish museum. At the same time Rabbi Lazar is a great unifying force in Russia. I have met some important people at his centre, including a leading Muslim businessman n Russia, who is now a close friend.

I have only wonderful things to say and I am very honoured to introduce him here tonight.
