Truly a masterpiece. Many people love this song but they're unable to articulate what the essence of this song is because they don't get it except perhaps on a subconscious level. It's subtle but definitely there.

My story is Pachelbel takes the boredom out of learning the scales. One of my favorites right after Clair de Lune.

Interesting take, I had not considered that. I'm making note of the gestalt of the song. It's a progression, but a progression of what?

Another version, this is an interesting mix of musicians -

Well I played b flat tenor trombone from 4 to 12 grade. So I'm 79 now and at the start of 4th grade my music books were really boring. That is roughly seventy years ago. Somewhere along the way my music books stuck in the Pachelbel theme, that made practice a little less dreary.
After graduating from high school, I never ever picked my trombone up again. It's stuck up in the rafters of my house right now

At age fifty I started playing the piano. Then carpal tunnel made me quit. About two years of piano playing kind of refreshed my music reading ability.

I was a mediocre trombone player, hated to practice, but did enjoy playing real music John Phillip Sousa style.
When I contrast my youtful experience to my adult experience, attitude is everything. Somehow I loved practicing piano.

As far as what I think you are alluding to is Pachelbel starts real simple and repeats the same style in ever increasing complexity. Which is a common theme many composers use.
