Dugin’s Eurasian council included the 'Supreme Mufti of Russia Talgat Tadzhuddin, Rabbi Avrom Shmulevich...even the Supreme Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar sent a congratulation’: CPRF

Alexander Dugin is a far from unambiguous figure and, as they say, contradictory in many ways. This is easy to see if you look at his eventful biography and stormy political life, analyzing the evolution of his views from the late 80s to the present day.

The founder of the Russian geopolitical school, the author of the fundamental textbook "Fundamentals of Geopolitics", which became the main teaching aid on this subject at the General Staff Academy and many other military educational institutions. Since the early 80s, Dugin has been one of the first researchers of such an ideological movement as Eurasianism. And yet, despite all this, the Russian press is literally replete with mentions of his name in a variety of contexts, sometimes completely unrelated to politics as such. Despite his formal non-affiliation with government bodies (with the exception of the modest position of assistant to the Chairman of the State Duma), Dugin is still, in the terminology of the media, a "newsmaker" deserving the widest attention and assessments, and the range of opinions regarding this person is so wide that sometimes one suspects whether this is one person or perhaps another collective image. Indeed, it is hard to comprehend how one person can manage to make his mark in all areas of political and public life, write and publish two or three books a year, countless articles on various topics, and also accommodate such diverse views and preferences in his consciousness. Take, for example, the fact that Dugin first gained fame as one of the leading experts in the field of metaphysics. In 1991, he published an entire book devoted to these issues - "The Paths of the Absolute", where he laid out in detail (as far as is generally possible within the framework of this topic) the main aspects and essence of the metaphysical worldview.

It is also known that he devoted a lot of time to Ariosophy, publishing the book "Hyperborean Theory" - based on the theoretical developments of the German scientist Hermann Wirth; various kinds of mystical phenomena, sometimes in combination with elements of occultism, to which he devoted a series of television programs "Secrets of the Century", filmed for the first channel in 1993. Today it turns out that Dugin is an authoritative figure in the Islamic world, which, with the exception of perhaps not so numerous Sufis, treats such occult-mystical views with great hostility. Despite this, Dugin actively cooperates with all Islamic authorities, from the Supreme Mufti of Russia Talgat Tadzhuddin, to the leader of the Muslims of the mountainous Chechnya Khozh-Akhmed Nukhayev, with whose active participation in 2001 he even held an international Islamic conference, which was attended by representatives of Muslims from all over the world. There Dugin stated that "Russia needs to seek allies among the peoples of the Islamic Ummah of Eurasian orientation, contrasting them with the Islamic peoples oriented toward America. According to A. Dugin, it is Eurasian Islam (including Islam on the territory of the former USSR) that has the greatest religious potential..." (Strana.ru 06/28/2001). And yet, we should not forget that the Islamic world is far from homogeneous and includes, for example, the same Arabs, including those living in Palestine. Everyone knows what kind of relations have been established there between the Arabs and the Israelis, and not only there. Nevertheless, Dugin, with his "Islamic authority", somehow managed to find a common language with the Jews. Moreover, representatives of both became part of Dugin's "Eurasia" Movement, which was subsequently transformed into a party with the same name. "The political council of the Movement included the Supreme Mufti of Russia Talgat Tadzhuddin, Rabbi Avrom Shmulevich, <…> Even the Supreme Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar sent a congratulation." ("Versiya", No. 19, 2001). But this is not the limit for Dugin.

If we look back to a time not so distant, we can find out that already at the end of the 80s, "Dugin began developing and introducing Eurasianism ideas into Russian politics. It should be noted here that for a long time these ideas were under an unspoken ban and anyone who tried to talk about Eurasianism automatically turned into an extremist. It is not surprising that, trying to delegate these ideas to various political forces and leaders, Dugin involuntarily became the ideologist of the entire patriotic opposition of the Yeltsin era. The authorities sharply rejected all these ideas, the opposition happily accepted them" ("Versiya", No. 19, 2001). It turns out that despite his good relations with the Jews, Dugin is also a Russian patriot who stood at the origins of the Russian patriotic movement as such, and it is well known what most Russian patriots actually represent: sharp anti-Semitism, with rare exceptions mixed with mediocre intellect and very modest mental abilities, which has been repeatedly ridiculed and criticized by Russian liberal Westerners. However, here Dugin stands out from the crowd with his intellect, academic title, knowledge of philosophy, history of religions, etc., and, in addition, fluently speaks the main European languages, which is something that even some of the so-called Russian "Westerners" can hardly boast of. Let us add to this that Dugin is an apologist for such paradoxical phenomena as conservative revolution and national Bolshevism.

From all of the above and far from complete picture of Dugin's interests, passions and views, it is quite difficult to draw a conclusion about his true essence. Politician or philosopher, radical or centrist? Dugin himself constantly talks about the need for a fundamental approach to any topic, to resolving any contradictions. In his works, he constantly refers to the original tradition, which is again the foundation of the main religions and cultures. However, assessing all of his passions, you involuntarily come to the thought that the fundamentality that Dugin speaks of is not so obvious. The only thing that can be said objectively and with confidence is that in all of his theoretical developments there is a risky synthesis. Having combined all of the above, it remains to make only one assumption - Alexander Dugin is a typical product of the postmodern era, - where everything that is possible is mixed, the incompatible is connected and the priceless is valued - the era in which we all live today ...
