A family member started farming in 1955 by renting 160 acres for $20 an acre.
In 1955 a dime was a dime. Ten cents.
In 2025 the same land rents for $400 an acre. The same 1955 dime is worth $4.50. That suggests that the rent in 1955 should be $900 an acre today ($20 x 45). So land rent at $400 an acre would seem a bargain basement price.
That land In 1955 would cost $225 an acre to purchase. Today it is closer to $20,000 an acre. ($225 x 45) works out to $10,125 an acre. Seems while recent rents are low the sale price today beats the 1955 price by nearly 100%.
These are Midwest prices. Florida swamp ground is still available for much less.
