North Korea accuses South of shooting across border

Tensions rise in the Korean Peninsula as the North accuses the South of opening fire towards its side of the land border.

Pyongyang said on Sunday that South Korea's military had opened gunfire towards a civil police station in the North on the eastern sector of the border.

In a report, North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the alleged shooting as a "planned provocation."

“The gunfire from the South was a serious threat to the safety of our police guards who were carrying out their normal border duty,” said the report. “It triggered an explosive situation on the border.”
The KCNA report also charged that the shooting was “designed to create tension” within the demilitarized zone, calling on Seoul to take measures to ensure such incident does not reoccur.

South Korea, however, has denied North's allegations, asserting that it has no knowledge of the incident.

The report came as South Korea's Navy began salvage operations for one of its vessels which sank near the North Korean maritime border on March 26 following an explosion that has not yet been explained.
