OK, here's what I'm looking for.

A system that's browser based, something I can view over the internet
Record from my desktop, client based not 24/7
2 - 3 IP Camera's, they can be POE or locally powered
Under $500

I'm a total newbie so be gentle.

Thanks in advance.

I use http://www.blueirissoftware.com/ they have a great trial download that is good for 15 days and the upside is you can mix and match just about any ip camera you find. say, a wireless linksys camera for 50 bucks on ebay.. its good. a cheap foscam from china... good. a high end axis ip PTZ cam. good. most software is proprietary so they want you to use their cameras. this software is good shit the full version is like 60 bucks. if you only want 2 cams its like 30 bucks.

go on ebay and pick up some cheap-ass ip cameras from china and you are golden. probably can do a whole setup for what you are thinking.

I hate to ask, but can you possibly provide a link to something that looks decent? And Book that system was like $1600, I can't afford that, going to the range this weekend. ;)

hahaha.

if you want to cheap out, youre going to have to piecemeal it together darknesman. there are complete systems that you can buy for around 500, but they are prolly not going to be network aware.

download, but dont install until you get cameras. tomorrow, I will get a spare computer up and running with the program and some run of the mill IP cams and you can check them out in real time over the internet. you can see the tree in my front yard that Im too lazy to chop up into firewood and everything. it will be so fun.

GoD, meant to post this link for you the other day. Lots of good info on this forum.

Dedicated section on IP cameras. I agree with Low5 on BlueIris software being the standard.

OK guys, thanks for all the info so let me get this straight

DVR
Only needed if I want to RECORD any audio and video and I want power a camera via coax?

IP Cameras
1 - Locally power or
2 - Powered via coax but then you need a DVR

Now the Blue Iris software, I've read only good things about it.
1 - BUT, do I need to have a PC running the software at my house 24/7?

I work well with diagrams, I work with Visio all the time and can get it, if I see the layouts.

Thanks again.

Low_five

ip cameras dont use coax or need a DVR. a regular coax cam is cheaper but needs the dvr. you need to power them with the supplied 12volt plug-in. you can splice on speaker wire to extend the length as long as you want, and run the speaker wire along with your cat-5

blueiris- yes you need a computer running 24/7

General of Darkness
8th April 2010, 05:36 PM
So with Blue Iris this is what it would look like? Or I just need a wireless card in the PC?

maybe. it depends on the capture card you run. (the card you will insert into your computer) theoretically, it will work as a DVR in that manner. be warned, that most cheapy cards will not record at a frame rate you will expect. you may see very choppy recording, especially if you max out and use four cams

Get on ebay and buy a dvr pc-card with four camera inputs capable of adding more. Dont get the cheap stuff. You want a card thats about 200.00 that uses either AMD or Intel cpu's and at least 120fps. These cards can be used with pan/tilt/zoom camera's or stationary camera's.
Ebay has some nice new day/night low lux camera's on the cheap for night viewing.
If you want a good durable camera's then I suggest the black and white Panasonic wv-BP314. These are old, but good for night viewing. You will have to shut them down about a half hour after sun up as you will not be able to see anything but a white picture. You can really set the sensitivity on these old camera's to see at night with only a security light on.
Get a terabyte harddrive and get the hardwired camera's. Wireless camera's are not secure, cost more and easily hacked to see what they are viewing. Besides you have to run power to them anyway so just run some 18/2 gauge shielded wire along with the coax and install a wired camera. Get the RG-6 quad shield coax if you can afford it.
Build your own outside housings with some PVC pipe and pexiglass and paint it if you cannot afford something from ebay.
If you have an old PC laying around use it as a dvr camera system. It's all in the software these days for a good dvr and a good dvr card is all you need to view online from any pc anywhere in the world as long as you know the password and IP of the pc.

Can you name some good camera's the are night and day, possibly an ebay link? I really HATE asking for help, but I also HATE making poor decisions and not spending money wisely.

Low_five

not for cheap, man. youre asking for food that tastes good and doesnt make you fat. a car with lots of power, but good fuel mileage. A woman with big tits, AND not fat. doesnt come cheap. I really havent run across a good low-light cam that doesnt white-out in the sun. or a good day cam that works well at night.
I also concur with what 7th said.

Heres a good one.
http://cgi.ebay.com/1-3-Sony-HAD-Day-Night-Low-Light-Security-Camera-380TVL_W0QQitemZ370293449778QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_ DefaultDomain_0?hash=item563735a432
Its color at day and switches to b/w at night.
Dont get fooled on a straight color night camera unless you are willing to spend some bucks. A decent priced camera that switches to B/W for night viewing is the only way to go.
B/W is the best all round night viewing from my experience and why the big boys still make high end night viewing in B/W.
B/W is used because in dealing in shades the B/W is better in sharper images than color where a slight shade difference is not easily contrasted.

Heres what I bought and though havent completely installed it yet I've tested it and like it a lot.

DAMN, those suckers are big.

No not really, just normal everyday camera's.
Wait till you see some of the zoom lenses you can put on those babies.

Are you looking for something smaller?
If the intruder can see them its better that he does before doing any damage. Thats the whole reason isnt it?

7, I'm looking for 3 - 4 outside cameras. I really don't care if people see them, in fact seeing them might be deterrent.

Heres the bad boy of all CCTV.
This guys even throwing in a free PTZ controller...........................damn good price and a free controller to boot.
Cant beat it if you ask me.

I actually install and maintain these for John Deere.
I'm not sure about the fourth of the price he's claiming in the add, but half the price is more realistic.
