In response to multiple inquiries regarding the status of unemployment compensation claims, Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees issued the following statement:
"Each and every claimant has a different situation, and we realize that. Because of the multiple extensions passed by Congress over the past two years, claimants are in various phases of receiving benefits.
Since Congress recessed last week without renewing additional unemployment compensation benefit extensions, all additional benefits are set to expire next week.
However, there is a phase out period, which means that claimants will be allowed to complete the tier of benefits that they are currently receiving. We encourage all claimants to continue to file for unemployment compensation benefits in the same manner that they have always done. This will allow DIR to pay all applicable benefits in a timely manner should Congress pass the renewal upon reconvening."
Since the beginning of the recession, Congress has passed four separate extensions for unemployment compensation benefits. The first tier extended benefits for an additional 20 weeks, the second 14 weeks, the third 13 weeks, and the fourth six weeks.
These extra weeks are added to the regular state benefits of 26 weeks. Congress also passed a law adding an additional $25 a week to each claimant's state benefits.
All of these measures are set to expire April 5, 2010. DIR will be notifying claimants by mail as their benefits expire.
