Putin is in charge, there is no doubt there. However, he let his term end when election time came to let Medvedev take the PM position, assuming a vice-pm role. Its tough to say you have a democracy when you are dictator for life. No need to step from behind the curtain n this age of television.
Medvedev is the former ceo of gazprom iirc, and Putin is high level FSB.

Poland's finance minister Jacek Rostowski has attacked (http://moneymorning.com/2010/03/31/invest-in-poland/) the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for encouraging governments to engage in excessive "stimulus" in 2009
...the finance ministry (http://www.iii.co.uk/news/?type=afxnews&articleid=7827873&subject=economic&action=article) said the measures the central bank proposed to meet Poland's obligations towards IMF, were "inappropriate (http://www.iii.co.uk/news/?type=afxnews&articleid=7816253&action=article)"...

Interesting that it was a plane crash. I remember reading somewhere that a persons chances of dieing in a plane crash is something like 1 in 10.5 million. Now for an abnormal person like a President who flies more often it may be higher. Regardless if it is 1 in 5 million or 1 in 10 million the chances are still tiny.

Russia angry over US missile shield (http://english.aljazeera.net/news/europe/2008/08/200881514010734640.html)
Friday, August 15, 2008
Russia has reacted angrily to a deal signed between Warsaw and Washington to station a missile defence system in Poland.
Moscow on Friday said the US had shown that Russia was the true target of the defensive shield, as tension between the two powers continued to rise over the conflict in Georgia.
"The fact that this was signed in a period of very difficult crisis in the relations between Russia and the United States over the situation in Georgia shows that, of course, the missile defence system will be deployed not against Iran but against the strategic potential of Russia," Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's Nato envoy, said.
General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of Russia's general staff, warned that Poland was making itself a target for Russia's military "100 per cent" by hosting the defence system.
"It becomes a target for attack. Such targets are destroyed as a first priority," Nogovitsyn said.
apparently the airfield the plane went down near was a remote military one.

Brilliant Polish strategy, load all your leaders into the same pillbox.
The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland's political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Polish plane crash highlights 'lamentable' fleet
WARSAW (Reuters) - The crash of a Polish official airliner that killed the president and dozens of top officials on Saturday highlights the condition of the government's air fleet, called "lamentable" by many critics.
The government has debated whether to replace its fleet of Soviet-era airplanes used for official visits, the oldest one of which is some 40-years old, but did not take the step fearing a voter backlash over large expenditures.
"We all know these planes were in lamentable condition," said Adam Rotfeld, a prominent Polish diplomat and former foreign minister said.
"This is an enormous tragedy, but it reminds us that top state representatives should really be travelling in the safest machines available."
The Tupolev Tu-154 which crashed on Saturday in Smolensk, claiming 97 lives, was manufactured in 1990. It underwent a major overhaul last year after it was grounded several times due to technical troubles.
The government also owns a second TU-154 and four smaller Yak-40s, along with 11 helicopters.
The larger Polish planes consume much more fuel than modern airlines and need to refuel at least once on longer routes, such as when flying to the United States.
A government helicopter carrying then Prime Minister Leszek Miller crashed in cold weather in 2003 due to heavy icing. All onboard survived, but Miller had to wear a backbrace after his hospital stay.
Due to frequent groundings, Kaczynski and Prime Minister Tusk had feuded several times over who would use the second TU-154 on several state visits and European Union summits.

(CNN) -- Polish President Lech Kaczynski's plane, which crashed Saturday in western Russia, killing Kaczynski and scores of other people, was overhauled last year, according to the general director of the company that performed the service.
Alexei Gusev, the general director of Aviakor Factory, told CNN that the plane, a Tupolev-154, received major refurbishing and repair in December 2009. The work included rebuilding all of the engines, he said.
His company also provided the Polish government with repair and maintenance parts for the next six years.
"The plane has been in use very little since that major repair," Gusev said. "Speaking openly, we believe that this tragedy could not have been caused by equipment failure."

The plane that crashed Saturday was 20 years old, just as old as the current Air Force One. The Pentagon is developing plans to purchase a new Air Force One fleet.
The Pentagon is considering buying a new fleet of presidential planes, known as Air Force One when the U.S. president is aboard.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates
on Wednesday told at a House Appropriations Committee hearing on the Pentagon budget that it's time for an upgrade.
"There clearly is a need for a new presidential aircraft," Gates said. "We actually have some money in the budget in 2011 to begin looking at a new Air Force One. That money will clearly ramp up in the -- in the next few years as we move in that direction."
Air Force One, with its presidential seal and white and blue paint job, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States of America and is the first impression the president makes at every visit abroad. The presidential aircraft carry the tail codes 28000 and 29000. The Air Force designation for the plane is VC-25A.
Over the last 10 years, Air Force One has flown an average of nearly 200,000 miles per year.
It is literally a flying office for the commander in chief for his delegation with advanced secure communications equipment. Just like a normal jetliner, Air Force One has a crew to fly the plane and attendants who prepare and serve meals and clean the aircraft. These crew members are carefully screened military personnel, with exemplary service histories.
But the fleet of planes now used to transport President Obama
-- two highly customized Boeing 747-200B series aircraft -- is aging. The first of the current aircraft were delivered 20 years ago during the administration of President George H. W. Bush.
Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan., a member of the committee and a former aerospace executive, noted that there are fewer than 20 747-200s -- the commercial model Air Force One is based on -- still in service. Tiarht said the president's aircraft is nearing a point where the operation and support costs will exceed the value of the existing planes.

Ok, a very basic rules on how agencies would do it.
If russians needed to remove polish president, they posses technology to bring it down on someone else's soil or above water. there was no need to shoot themselves in the foot by bringing it down on their own soil.
If however some foreign agency needed to knock a polish president out, it would be very VERY convenient to bring it down on russian soil. you kill polish leader AND blame the russians. non-russian intelligence agencies also have a technology to bring plane down in another country.

'Russia engineered air crash that killed President Kaczynski,' claims Polish MP (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1265482/Leck-Kaczynski-Russia-engineered-plane-crash-claims-Polish-MP.html)
By Mail Foreign Service
Last updated at 8:09 AM on 13th April 2010
The Russian government prevented the Polish president's plane from landing four times to divert him from a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, according to an MP.
Artur Gorski said the Russians 'came up with some dubious reasons' that the aircraft couldn't land because they feared President Leck Kaczynski's presence would overshadow a similar event hosted by the Russian prime minister a few days before.
And their alleged plan ended in disaster when the Polish pilots made one final and disastrous attempt to land, killing Mr Kaczynski, his wife, and 94 others on board the plane.
'One version of events says that the plane approached the airport four times, because every time the Russians refused it permission to land - they wanted to send the plane with the president to an airport in Moscow or Minsk,' Mr Gorski claimed in an interview published in the newspaper Nasz Dziennik.
'They came up with some dubious reasons: that there was fog over the airport, and that the navigation system didn't work as it was under renovation, and that airport had a short landing strip.'
The claims were made as shocking new details emerged of the final minutes of the flight before it crashed into a Russian forest on Saturday morning.
One of the Russian air traffic controllers involved in the tragedy said he believes the Polish air force pilot Arkadiusz Protasiuk, 36, was under severe pressure 'to land at any cost' so that the president would not miss the commemoration of the death of 22,000 Poles slaughtered by Stalin.
But he claims there were also serious language problems between the control tower at the military airport near Smolensk and the crew as the aircraft began its descent, and final approach, 'without our permission'.
The crew failed to report to the ground their altitude readings, said Colonel Anatoly Muraviev, a former pilot.
He believes the captain 'was desperate to land because of the high ranking passengers he was carrying. It killed both the crew and the passengers.'
It was known that Mr Kaczynski once fired a flight crew when they refused to land at Tbilisi - and flew to another airport, he said.
'Now try to imagine yourself in chief pilot's shoes. Fear, false shame, thinking that going to another airport is a disgrace - all this led to the fact that the crew died and killed all the others. I am a former pilot myself, I understand all this very well.'
The tapes of the conversations with the flight crew have not been released - so it is unclear if there is specific evidence of an order to the captain from either the president or the military top brass on board.
Polish investigators said they will probe whether there were 'any suggestions made to the pilots' from other people aboard the plane.
Colonel Muraviev claimed there were a number of specific causes of the crash - 'weather conditions, maybe a mistake of the pilot who did not watch his altitude, and also the pilot's wish to land at any cost'.
He said the controllers and flight crew stumbled in Russian and broken English to understand each other in the final decisive seconds of the flight.
Col Muraviev claimed that the fog 'was worsening' as the Polish president's plane came into land. One flight had landed earlier but another had been redirected to Moscow.
Of Kaczynski's flight, he said: 'At first it was descending OK, according to the rules, no problems. Soon our air traffic controllers began to worry. The head of our group three times ordered the pilots to stop this attempt to land, and try one more time, while also preparing to fly to another airport because of bad visibility.
'The crew did not listen to him. So the traffic control warned them about bad visibility and the necessity to fly to another airport.
'The crew did not obey, so the controllers had only one thing to do - to carry on leading in the plane and see what happens. There was only one attempt to land and the plane crashed.'
Because it was a civilian flight, they did not have the authority to order them to another airport, he said.
He said 'mainly we spoke Russian to the crew, partly bad English. Understanding was hard.'
The Polish pilots 'began to land without our permission' and 'did not report to us with their altitude data', he added.
Another controller Pavel Plyusnin confirmed the understanding was '50-50' as the plane approached its tragic end.
'It was hard to guess here if the pilot understood us properly,' said Col Muraviev. 'The language barrier did not help of course. I think it could have affected the result of this flight along with other circumstances.'
The Polish air force yesterday defended father-of-two Captain Protasiuk, saying he 'often flew with the president and other VIPs'.
A spokesman said it was 'ruled out' that the president could have forced the pilot to land at Smolensk.
The body of Poland's first lady Maria Kaczynska was identified yesterday by her wedding ring - with her husband's name inscribed on the inside - and the colour of her finger nails. Many of the bodies are so badly mangled they will require DNA matching.

Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16466522)
A Polish military prosecutor has shot himself in the head after cutting short a news conference in his office, officials and media reports say.
Col Mikolaj Przybyl was defending a military investigation into media leaks related to the air crash that killed the Polish president in 2010.
He asked reporters to leave so that he could take "a break".
Upon hearing a loud thud, the reporters returned to find him on the floor with a pool of blood around his head.
Mr Przybyl, who was in his office in Poznan, western Poland, is now in hospital in stable condition. His life is not in danger, according to hospital officials.
One of the reporters present told Polish television: "We heard a loud thud and we went back into the room thinking one of the cameras had fallen over. Then we saw the prosecutor motionless on the ground in a pool of blood, his military gun beside him."
In television pictures of the news conference, Col Przybyl is seen reading out a statement to reporters: "During my entire service as a civilian and later military prosecutor, I have never brought shame to the Republic of Poland and I will protect the honour of an officer of the Polish armed forces and prosecution. Thank you, please give me a five-minute break, I need to rest."
He then walks out of shot and the sound of a gun being cocked can be heard followed by a loud bang.
At the news conference, Mr Przybyl had denied prosecutors in Poznan, western Poland, had eavesdropped on journalists who were investigating the crash, AFP news agency reports.
Concern Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said in a statement he was "concerned" about the incident and had asked the head of the national security bureau to monitor the situation.
The plane taking then President Lech Kaczynski's delegation to a memorial service for the victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre of Polish officers by Soviet secret police crashed in thick fog in Smolensk, western Russia, on 10 April 2010.
As well as MR Kaczynski, his wife and 94 senior officials also died when the jet tried to land.
Investigators blamed pilot error.

Poland found explosives on wreckage of president's plane-report (http://af.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idAFBRE89T0KC20121030)
WARSAW (Reuters) - Polish investigators found traces of explosives on the wreckage of the government jet that crashed in Russia two years ago, killing Poland's president and 95 others, daily Rzeczpospolita reported on Tuesday.
Without citing sources, the newspaper said prosecutors and explosive experts who examined the remains of the plane in Russia found signs of TNT and nitroglycerin on the wings and in the cabin, including on 30 seats.
Traces of explosives were also found in the area where the Tu-154 crashed during its approach to a sma
ll airport near the Russian city of Smolensk on April 10, 2010, the daily reported.
Poland's military prosecutor's office plans to respond to the report later on Tuesday, its spokesman said.
Russian investigators had blamed the Polish crew for trying to land in heavy fog, while their Polish counterparts also said the airport controllers should not have allowed the plane to attempt an approach.
Some rightist groups in Poland, including main opposition party Law and Justice, had rejected the findings and suggested the crash could have been an assassination of President Lech Kaczynski and political and military leaders who flew with him.
In their official reports, investigators said they found no proof of the involvement of third parties.
The investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the traces of explosives come from unexploded bombs dating back to World War Two that could have remained in the area where the aircraft came down, the newspaper said.

Great last line to the article. Got to have down play.
The investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the traces of explosives come from unexploded bombs dating back to World War Two that could have remained in the area where the aircraft came down, the newspaper said.

Yes how fucking likely is that, somehow some unexploded explosives in the forrest, exploded 70 years later at the exact same time as the polish president was flying over them...

I took it as the plane just happened to crash in a heavily saturated area of 70 year old left over bombs. Plane malfunction or pilot error was the cause. Kind of like finding a passport on top of rubble from a scary muzzie on 911.
I just noticed this too.
World War Two
Who writes about that war zionist chess game like that? I have seen WWII and World War II, but never with the II spelled out. Spell check?

Polish paper fires editors over article on presidential crash
* Paper said traces of explosives were found in wreckage
* But prosecutors denied the report
* Daily fires top editors, author of controversial article
By Chris Borowski
WARSAW, Nov 6 (Reuters) - One of Poland's best-selling newspapers fired its most senior editors on Tuesday over a "flawed" article that triggered a political row when it said traces of explosives had been found in the wreckage of a presidential jet that crashed in 2010.
Polish prosecutors denied a report last week by the Rzeczpospolita daily which alleged they had found traces of TNT and nitro-glycerine on the wings and in the cabin of the jet, which killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others when it crashed in Russia (http://gold-silver.us/places/russia) two years ago.
The report, which cited unnamed sources, prompted the late-president's twin brother and opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski to lash out at Prime Minister Donald Tusk over his handling of the affair, which he called a "heinous crime".
In a statement in Rzeczpospolita's Tuesday edition, its supervisory board said it had recommended that Editor-in-Chief Tomasz Wroblewski, his top deputy, and the two leaders of the national section be dismissed.
"The reporters associated with the publication did not have the grounds to state that traces of TNT and nitro-glycerine were found in the wreckage," the newspaper said. "We deem the text to be flawed and inadequately documented."
The board also asked for the author of the article to be fired after he failed to provide any written proof to back up his sources.
Grzegorz Hajderowicz, Rzeczpospolita's owner and the head of its supervisory board, confirmed the sackings had taken place.
"Consequences have to be paid for wrong decisions, hence the dismissals and disciplinary firings," he said in a separate statement on the paper's website.
Rightist groups led by Kaczynski's Law and Justice party have accused investigators of failing to unearth the real reason for the crash with many suggesting that Warsaw and Moscow have colluded in a cover-up.
Official reports say the jet crashed into the ground after losing one of its wings when it clipped a birch tree on its approach to a small airport in Smolensk, western Russia (http://www.reuters.com/places/russia?lc=int_mb_1001).
Russian investigators blamed the Polish crew for trying to land in heavy fog and misjudging their altitude, while their Polish counterparts said the Russian airport controllers should not have allowed the plane to attempt such an approach.
Polish military prosecutors said evidence of high energy particles had been found in the wreckage, but cautioned such material often yielded false positives, saying the samples would require further testing to determine whether there were traces of explosives too.
Prosecutors have admitted that at least four victims in the plane crash were misidentified and given to the wrong families to be buried, fuelling conspiracy theories.
