Record number of Washington CPLs

Recently I wrote here about an MSNBC report that discussed the record number of American citizens licensed to carry in 48 states (there is no concealed carry in Illinois or Wisconsin).

On Thursday, word was received from Bruce Tanaka, Firearms Unit program manager at the Department of Licensing in Olympia that 258,381 citizens now possess Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL). This figure includes 45,853 women.

On a per capita basis, that places the Evergreen State in the Top Ten in terms of the number of concealed carry licenses in relation to the overall state population. Washington has been a leader in protecting gun rights, despite the presence of anti-gun liberal Democrats in the Legislature, which has been under one-party rule for quite some time. (Translation: Democrats can’t blame Republicans for the horrendous budget deficit, and they should be held responsible in November for the $800 million in new taxes we’ll be paying.)

Yet with all of these armed citizens, Seattle still has a far lower homicide rate than the similar-sized Milwaukee, WI and Washington, D.C.

This is a record number of CPLs, and the figure appears to be gradually climbing, although Tanaka said it bounces a bit depending upon renewals and expirations that are not renewed.
