With 1 in 5 Americans out of work, Obama issues over a million green cards

The Department of Homeland Security has just reported that during 2009, they issued 1,130,818 new Green Cards to foreign nationals, allowing them to work legally in this country. That number represents the fourth highest number of cards issued in one year.

750,000 of the new Green Cards were given to the families of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.

The top four recipient nations are as follows:

-Mexico…164,920
-China…receiving 64,238
-Philippines…60,029
-India…57,304

How did USA get created? By immigration. Every freakin' each one of your family, except if you have blood of american indians, has immigrated here. So what now, I am here and it's good enough, close all borders.?

I know a number of green card holders. I was one at one point (I have a master's degree). A good majority of the ones that go through a program and who come from Eastern Europe are well educated. It is a common knowledge that you'd have to be a young professional, have a degree, or have an extensive experience in one of the professions that is in demand in US to get through this "lottery". Worst case - you can be a pretty young lady willing to pursue a degree. It is not a true lottery, it is a way around H1B and other work visas, it is a way to bring into the country more young educated foreigners - at least this is how it plays out for Eastern Europe.

I personally know several doctors and other medical stuff, a number of contractors and a bunch of skilled computer programmers who went through the program.
