Spyware/Virus protection help?

Currently I'm not running any protection. Could anyone recommend a good, free site that scans for viruses and spyware. I remember at the old GIM that there were many threads about them. Sine its deliberate destruction, my bookmarks are useless.

AVG has a free version - looks good:

AVAST.

They have a free home edition and it works great without bogging your system down. Register it and it will be good for a year, don't and it's good for 30 days.

Malware.com has great search engines

mybleepingcomputer.com is a good website when you are hi-jacked, as is (hijack this!)

Spybot.com, adaware (lavasoft.com) are excellent freeware sites

I could be wrong, but you internet provider MAY provide free anti-virus (Comcast provides Norton).

You may as well continue to go unprotected if you decide to use AVG, it's about as ineffective as Norton while loading your system down with crap you don't need.

Honestly, I bought the full internet security from Avast and while it has intercepted many attacks and I have remained infection free (Malware bytes scans always clean), the new version IS a fvcking resource hog and frequently runs in the background hogging CPU. I'm probabkly going to drop it when my renewal is up and go to Avast.

Avast and use Malware when I go somewhere I have no business going. I don't find Avast to slow the computer down much at all.

avira is THE bomb!...it gets the crap BEFORE it hits your system, not like avg which informs you you are infected AFTER the fact.

ccleaner, set to gutman, use the registry cleaner often as well....as book said defrag ( i use iobit)

I run CCleaner daily and at startup.
AVG uses CPU intermittently according to task manager, sometimes 30% or more and not during a scheduled scan.
I defrag the HD weekly.
I scan the registry biweekly.

I have been using AVG for 3 years and have had ZERO problems, either virus OR slowdowns. ZERO.

When my 2 year 'script expired, I went to free and lost my firewall, but I added Comodo free firewall and am happy as a clam for the last year.

Oh, and I also nabbed Ccleaner and run it every now and again.

CCleaner is great, I just wish it had a clean on shutdown or logoff option... why startup??????

Oh and if you are using ccleaner, be sure to manually add your flash cache directory.
