Easy on the sugar!

This Summer Tomato blog offers many eye-opening facts on the sugar content of common foods.

She writes:

"Refined sugars and high-fructose corn syrup are considered by many experts to be the biggest contributors to obesity and poor health in Western civilization.

In her book What To Eat, Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition at NYU, suggests that any food that contains more than 15 grams of sugar per serving is closer to dessert than anything else."

Here is a partial list of the foods Summer Tomato posted:

1. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut -- 10 grams

2.Ben & Jerry’s vanilla ice cream -- 16 grams

3.Starbucks caffè latte grande (16 oz) -- 17 grams

Reminds me of the latest Jamie Oliver programme “food revolution” in which he went off to this school in America in Huntington, VA. Just in the sugar content of the strawberry milk alone, if memory serves, there was an astronomical amount of sugar in it. And that over the child’s life from kindergarten to like 6th grade they would consume a heaped wheelbarrow of sugar just from the flavored milk alone.

sure was an eye opener on just how bad the state of the food is, or rather what passes as food these days.

I am sure there is a video floating about out there but cannot find a link for it from work at the moment.

What's even more amazing is the variety of sweets that don't even have actual sugar in them. They're made with a cheaper substitute that is not actually food.

That's the sad part. Kids are developing tastes at that age, and this is when they're bombarded with artificial crap that isn't food. Cherry Koolaid, does not taste like cherries at all. The body craves tart flavors for the nutrients like vitamin C, instead we feed our kids this flavored crap that sates the cravings but starves the body.

I cringe when I hear parents say they are feeding their kids a healthy snack because there is aspartame or splenda in it. How about just giving them an orange?

Sorry for the hijack and the rant :P.

Not a rant, RJB, and it's totally relevant. It amazes me how many of the products on the list advertise themselves as 'healthy'. Yogurts, 'mineral waters', superfoods...

Margarine is another classic. Butter is much more healthy, and given how much more flavour it has, you don't need to use it in excess.
