"I certainly didn't realize our police officers were making so much money," Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower says. "Most people are in a state of mind right now where they [will probably] think those kinds of salaries are just out of control."

The problem is that these guys were probably working 80 hours a week to get these massive salaries. A 60-70K job, add enough overtime and it can balloon into the 175K salaries in this article.

Overworked, over tired, just a bad combo. Departments need to be strict regarding overtime.

Too much overtime is not good for the department, the officers, and the public. They need to adust their staffing, hire more people. There's plenty of folks that need work.

WOW!!!!!!!

I think that the officers in my city are only making a fraction of the salaries that were mentioned in the article and we are also for on cops.

I think that it will be hard for a lot of local gov'ts to add staffing because the local gov'ts are cutting back on the budget as a result of the bad economy and some other factors.

80 hours a week of what? Donut shop cruising? getting blowjobs in their car by hookers?

With all the hookers and blow in Miami Beach, I'm sure they're more than happy to work overtime.

That's probably their salary they earn from The First 48. Seems like a lot of the shows are in Miami. Thank God they have so many murders down there or we'd never see such riveting tv.

Hell, look at what the Fire Fighters get, looks like they do a lot better.....

"Like Fernandez, Capt. Jon E. Hart also works as an Advanced Life
Support supervisor out of the Brickell Station. A 29-year fire
rescue veteran, Hart technically retired in 2006 but continues to be
one of the department's top earners under the state's deferredcompensation
retirement plan. Hart collected more than $157,000
in base salary and grossed more than $101,000 in overtime in 2009,
as part of an estimated compensation package that cost the city
$311,000. That doesn't include the $118,000 annual pension he
started collecting in 2007."
