Man kills himself after 'racist' joke backfires
10:35 AM Monday Apr 12, 2010 Facebook

A British lab technician shot himself in the head after being suspended over a 'racist' joke that was overheard at work. Photo / Michael CunninghamIt started as a harmless joke between friends, but ended with a lab technician putting a bullet in his head after his company suspended him for being "racist".

When Roy Amor, 61, saw immigration officers outside his clinic, he joked to a black colleague, who was a close friend, that he "better hide", according to the Mail on Sunday.

The black colleague was not offended, but someone in the office overhead the comment and made a formal complaint to the company, Opcare, which makes prosthetic limbs.

Mr Amor, from Lancashire in the United Kingdom, was suspended, and was said to have been devastated.

Five days later, he received an email from his bosses.

Without even being able to get through the whole email, Mr Amor sent back that he could not deal with the matter because he was too upset.

He shot himself that afternoon.
"Roy made a joke along the lines that his friend had better hide in case the officers found him," a friend told the Mail on Sunday.

"It was nothing more than a good-humoured joke but apparently someone overheard it and made an official complaint because they thought it was racist.

"Roy was devastated when he was suspended and was worried he might lose his job."

Mr Amor left three suicide notes describing his despair.

His black colleague is understood to have attended Mr Amor's funeral.

Opcare's chief executive, Michael O'Byrne, confirmed that Mr Amor had been suspended over the joke.

"It's an enormous tragedy and we are all in mourning. I knew Roy personally and he was an excellent technician."

Asked if he had any regrets about suspending him, Mr O'Byrne replied: "I don't want to comment further."

Mr Amor had worked at the clinic for 30 years and leaves his wife of 39 years and a grown up son and daughter.

Where did he get the gun?

I'm sure if he didn't have a gun he would have lived.

This only goes to show you that there is a need to get a license for suicides. If they required licenses, the government could make sure they were safe.

crying "racist" kills! Something must be done NOW to those who use racial guilt to cause mental stress and harm to otherwise law abiding citizens.

Political correctness as run amok all over the planet. I used to think this kind of sh*t only happened in the US.

You're your best friend and worst enemy.
Sad but true.

I hope that someone in the office that overhead the comment and made a formal complaint to the Opcare company, shoots themself in the head.

I thought "close friends" were supposed to step forward and explain it was all just a joke. Cut the guy a break it doesn't sound like he was even aware.

Anyway, I hope the office snitch is suitably guilt ridden.

Yeah, that's what I would have done. Sounds like he decided to top himself almost instantly upon reading the message.

With political correctness the way it is in the U.S., a person just has to be careful of what they say and to who they say it to as well to whoever might be listening.

And since you know once guns are made illegal . . . guns no longer exist . . . then that means this story never happened. :sarc:

And I agree with what EE_ said and gave him some positive K for it.

I must disagree SA, I for one am long tired of watching what I say and to whom I say it as well as to those snooping ears that are eager to report to whatever agency my speech applies to. I'm sorry my friend but Fvck the PC BS and especially the bringing in of the thought/speech police.

Thankfully I'm self-employed. I can only fire myself. ;D

I say screw the world. If they can't take a joke then why would anyone want to be miserable looking over their shoulder while working for a bunch of PC Nazis.

The freedom of speech can be ugly sometimes but people are not strong enough to hear it and when they do not like what is being said about them or the group that they represent, then unfortunately the consequences can be severe for the person who is saying things that are not "politically correct".

You can call a spade a spade but are you willing to deal with whatever consequences of calling a spade a spade?

I can be outspoken on a few occasions but I have to be ready to suffer the consequences of speaking my mind. If I know in advance that I am not able to deal with the consequences as a result of speaking my mind in a given setting to a certain group of people, then I have to remain quiet.

Proof that guns are the best defense against racism.

Wait.... What?
