Homeless mother of 15 says she needs help, justice

http://www2.tbo.com/exposure/ar/659/372/2010/04/21/42725_angel-adams.jpg

By KEITH MORELLI | The Tampa Tribune

Published: April 21, 2010

TAMPA - The din of a room at the Economy Inn on East Busch Boulevard is nearly deafening at times.

Twelve children ranging from teenagers to toddlers to infants are here, scrambling across the floor, bouncing on beds. With eyes filled with resignation, they are hungry and dirty and they wear the same clothes they wore the day before and the day before that.

Mom is asking for help, saying she is homeless and hopeless. A relative paid for the hotel room for a week, and after that, who knows. Her fiancé is in prison. Her 1-year-old is named John The Baptist Brown.

Angel Adams is indignant when asked about her situation, saying somebody owes her. The lifelong Tampa resident says she wants justice from the Hillsborough County sheriff's child protection team that took her kids away from her two years ago and from Hillsborough Kids Inc., which got her kids back six months ago.

"What do I do?" she says. "I have no answers. My family has been railroaded. Someone needs to pay.
"Nobody's helping me."

Inside the dingy motel, Adams hands out a list of her children and their ages. Across the top: "Three fathers. One Mother. Fifteen Children."

Food is donated. They get Cuban sandwiches and packaged noodles. There's a microwave and mini refrigerator. No stove. One sink, one toilet, one shower. Everyone's barefoot, walking on a dirty, stained green carpet.

The dull smell of dirty diapers fills the room. Jerome, 11, gives Andrew, 6 months, a bottle. "This is not comfortable," Jerome says.

The baby coughs and spits up.

"The girls sleep on one bed," Adams says. "The boys sleep on the other. I just crash on the floor."

The 12 kids are the youngest of 15 altogether, she says. Three have "aged out," meaning they have turned 18 and are on their own, no longer a part of the child welfare system.

"I can have as many as I want to," she says. All her kids, she adds, "are gifts from God."

The 37-year-old mother doesn't work. "This is my work," she says gesturing toward the throng of children. "I do this all by myself."

She says she has needs and she wants Hillsborough Kids to take care of that.

"I need a house," she says, "a big enough home to be comfortable. The kids are scared. I'm scared."

She says she had an $800-a-month, two-bedroom apartment that was paid for by Hillsborough Kids, but she was evicted last week.

So, she sits amid her children, wondering what will happen next week.

"I don't know what I'm going to do," she says. The system, she says, "is not hearing me. This is a revolving door going nowhere."

Hillsborough Kids spokesman Elaine Olszewski said that's not the case. There is a system of support at work behind the scenes and by next week, she says, Adams likely will be in a home that will be big enough to accommodate her children.

Case managers have been in constant contact with Adams, she says, and the case is about to close. To close a case, social workers make sure all the requirements of a safe wholesome environment exist for the children and a judge signs an order.

Hillsborough Kids, which manages child welfare in the county, is working with Metropolitan Ministries to arrange a place to stay for Adams and should have one ready by next week.

"They are working on it," Olszewski says. "As far as we are concerned, this really isn't a story."

She said the children were taken away by sheriff's deputies two years ago, but were reunited with Adams six months ago, when she was set up in an apartment off North Boulevard near of Columbus Drive. A home-study report was completed to the satisfaction of everyone involved, she says.

"A judge ruled the situation sufficient," Olszewski says. The eviction involved "other issues, not having to do with us," she says.

Typically, single moms in similar situations have frequent visits by case workers, who work with charities in the community and coordinate grant money to pay for services.

"It's on a case-by-case basis," she says. "It's not that we would financially support them, but we are connected to community partners that provide assistance."

The goal when children are removed from the home is to get them back with biological parents, she said, and caseworkers try to work to that end, she says.

"Children always are better with their biological parents," she says. "Once we determine they are safe and everything is appropriate, there's a six-month period when they still are technically in the system. We continue to monitor the kids."

She says all the children of school age are enrolled and going to school, although Adams says they have not gone to school since she took up residence in the hotel. She says she can't get them to school.

"There's a lot of support out there," Olszewski says, "and we kind of direct them. She has the support from the community, churches and family members."

Once all requirements are met, a court hearing is scheduled and a judge signs off on it and the case is closed, Olszewski says.

"It was supposed to have happened last week," but something came up in the courtroom, she says. "It should be this week."

She can have as many kids as she want because they are 'gifts from god' but someone got to pay?

I feel really sorry for the situation these poor kids are in. Their mum is a sandwich short of a picnic and has a serious case of entitlement mentality.

She says she needs to be given a house big enough for all of them. Clearly she thinks if she can pop enough children out, she will be entitled to a free mansion.

the sad reality is that she probably will get a free house, car, money, food, etc. from somebody now that this is on the news. people in that community will not want to be branded as uncaring, racists. she'll get exactly what she wants, and a bunch of 40k a year earners will get taxed more to give it to her.

this what pisses me off most about these kinds of stories. if somebody is that big of a retard, their kids should just be taken away at birth.

Yeah somebody is paying for those kids. It's the taxpayers.

So she says she needs a house big enough for her and all of her children eh? Well I want a $100 million dollars in cash but guess what? Nobody is going to give me $100 million dollars and there is no way that I am going to get $100 million dollars unless I can hijack Ben Bernanke's helicopter. ;D

I might be very wrong here because I am not a religious expert but I think that the Holy Ghost possessed her to have all of those children. She said something about the children being "gifts from GOD". Then again what do I know? I am an agnostic. Another possibility for her having all of those children is that Octomom talked her into having all of those children. These are all just WAGs because I have no idea what possessed her to continue to have children that she cannot afford to take care of.

For anyone living in Florida, you all better hide your purses and wallets because the Florida gov't goons are going to be on the prowl for more money from the Florida taxpayers.

I think most people are so self-absorbed and spoiled that they can't imagine sacraficing their toys to care for and pay for 15 kids.

When I first started working at the company I work for, they had a "college hire" program where all the college hires kind of collaborated (basically I worked with 5 people my own age) for awhile. The subject of children came up, I was the only one married (23) at the time. They asked if we were going to have kids and I said yes, maybe 3-4. Who knows, maybe more. Their eyes went all wide and they asked how on earth we were going to pay for those kids, "you know kids cost like $50,000 per year. EACH" I told them they were crazy, kids can wear hand-me-down clothes and clothing from Goodwill or the Salvation Army. They told me I was cruel to be making my imaginary kids wear "old" clothes and not stuff from Abercrombie and Gap. It was quite the wake up that I had moved somewhere that I was out of touch with! HAHA

I was saving my money, cooking at home, and paying down debt. They were spending their paychecks at the bar and inviting me to dinner EVERY NIGHT. Spending $50k on your children every year is irresponsible!

I don't like to use the word scum, but.... this woman disgusts me. The fact is as a worker and someone who actually contributes to society, I could not afford to support all those children or aspire to a home like this leech will have.

I have no doubt this story is true, but is it being pedaled as a propaganda piece? Give excessive handouts, push stories like this in the media, wait for the legitimate rage of working individuals, then use it to severely cut welfare, even for those who legitimately need a hand despite their best efforts?

You are exactly right. I've been working on a local housing authority project and the entitlement mentality that this lady is showcasing is the rule, not the exception. Most of the bums living in the free/subsidized housing think this way. We're currently in the final phase of a four phase renovation project of a large group of subsidized apartments (funding compliments of Obama stimulus), and the apartment units in the first phase are already being trashed. We toured one of the finished units recently and some of the furniture/appliances were missing (probably sold), trim was pulled off one of the doors, and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned once since it was finished. And EVERY TIME I go out for a site visit, every one of the bums who sees me starts demanding (not asking, demanding) that we do something for them, they need this, they want that, with an added "how do you expect me to live like this"? One time I noticed a lady who needed a hand carrying her groceries to her door; I dropped my tools and helped her with her bags. Instead of a thank you, I got a "when are you people going to give me my new windows?"

Instead of a thank you, I got a "when are you people going to give me my new windows?"

i used to live in south dakota, quite close to some reservations and gov. housing. i could tell stories that you would swear i'm making up.

one time, they opened a cul-de-sac development of res. housing on a friday, 6 or 7 houses. i had to deliver some equipment to one house on the cul-de-sac the following tuesday. the houses were completely destroyed. every piece of copper piping, water heaters, toilets, everything had been gutted and sold for drug + liquor money. holes in wall, busted windows, completely destroyed in 4 days. within about a month, the whole place was a ghost town. the people moved in, gutted the houses, then just moved back to their old shitty trailers. amazing.

I believe you, Chad. Was there any comeback for these people, or were they still 'entitled'?

Any more stories?

Jesus Christ it's called a condom. I know wearing one inst all that great but come on... If I were to risk having a child with out being economically able to support it (which I am not now) I would spend the $1 or 2 on a condom. Allah in heaven this shit is ccrraaazzyyyy!!!!! Don't worry she will have that new house run down and next to uninhabitable soon enough. I have seen it happen over and over in the ghetto sections of Wash DC.

Housing project is new... gets destroyed... rehabbed to better than new... destroyed once again.

The ultimate consumers... as that is all they do.

You shouldn't call her a lady! Did you tell her to ask Obama for the windows?

Why are women delaying having children or opting not to have them at all?

For many couples, the answer is pure economics. Researchers who study these trends note that the drop in birth rates and the rise in the average age of first-time parents coincides with the beginning of the recession. The economic slump has meant that some people in their 20s are getting a slower start to their career track or they cant find a job at all. Other young couples report that they are delaying having kids because they fear the could lose their jobs at some point in the future.

^^ Blacks and browns don't have to worry about stuff like this, because Whitey is still paying them to have 17 kids. It's the working White families that are the ones delaying reproducing.
