BEAVER CREEK, Minn. - A South Dakota banker became a hero this month when he saved a Minnesota farmer who was on the verge of suffocating in a grain bin.
Seventy-four-year-old Everett Vande Voort was working on his farm in Beaver Creek when he climbed inside a grain bin to correct a problem. He got things working and tried to climb out. That's all he remembers.
Within minutes, corn had piled up around his neck.
Meanwhile, farm lender David O'Hara of Sioux Falls, S.D. was in Vande Voort's kitchen for an appointment. When the farmer was late, his wife and O'Hara went searching and found Vande Voort in the bin.
O'Hara jumped in and shoved corn away from the farmer's face, keeping him alive until emergency workers could free him.
Vande Voort tells the Argus Leader it's a miracle he's still alive.
