Kids are leading the world’s transition to digital media.
This is in part because kids aren’t afraid of technology, and, in part, because kids haven’t spent years getting use to anything else.

So if you want to get a sense of where the world’s media habits are headed, it makes sense to watch what kids are doing.

The Kaiser Family Foundation did just that in a comprehensive survey released in January. Kaiser surveyed more than 2,000 families, and turned up all sorts of interesting information about the media habits of 8-18 year olds.

Some key points:

•Kids consume a hell of a lot of media–and more all the time. Basically, if kids are awake, they’re consuming media. And, increasingly, they’re consuming multiple forms of media at the same time.
•Kids’ print media consumption is tiny and falling.
•Kids’ digital media consumption is going through the roof.
No big surprise there. What is a surprise is how little parents seem to care about this. (Or, alternatively, how much parents encourage this media consumption by consuming a huge amount of media themselves.)

•In 2/3 of households, TVs are on during meals
•In 75% of households, TVs are on when no one is watching them.
•More than 70% of kids have TVs in their bedrooms
•Only 1/3 of households have media-consumption rules
No surprise, more media is consumed in households in which TVs are always on, where there are no rules, and where kids have TVs in their bedrooms.

And, no surprise, kids who consume the most media get the worst grades (is this cause or effect?)

It’s a long presentation, but it’s awesome.

I noticed the chart doesn't include cell phone/texting. Technically not "media" in the sense it is being used, maybe, but it IS a medium of communication, and the end result of overconsumption and use is still the same IMO.

No popular activity engaged in by all people is having a more detrimental effect by destroying the ability to effectively and understand language that texting/tweeting...

"You are limited to 140 characters, Comrade!"

a few of the more interesting charts imo

amazing that in just 5 years there was a 2 and a quarter hour increase in media...and in that same time frame i'm sure the "media" they are consuming has become exponentially more toxic, graphic, etc

A future where they will actually carry a micro computer in their person and will be plugged in directly to the same........ (Neuro-Comp) my name.

A future where they will live alone in one big room where all that they do will be by means of an advance type of comp that of yet has no name.

A future where in the above room they will live their fantasies and where like in Star Trek they will have all that they want or care to do.

A future where even sex will be by means of this advance comp because no one will be able to tell what is real or not.

A future where everyone will be smarter.................but..........when everything comes crashing down they will be blind and will be less capable than those living wild in the woods.

I read a lot on my comp but....... I will never allowed it to control me for what makes me what I am is my mind.

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, [a] they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

Man cannot escape the unintended consequences of chaos... it's built into the pie.

The perfect system does not exist as part of our known state of being. Man's machinations, no matter how inspired, no matter how worthy, no matter how complex - is no match for - and cannot include, exclude nor account for the effects of the unknown. For unintended consequences. For chaos. For the Lord.

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men ...

That's 'cause it's all been said and done before. We're just riders on a grand Merry-go-'round.

Only the ride never stops. We're born onto it and tossed off when our ticket gets punched... brass ring, or no.
