It’s been awhile but today was a good day at the flea market. 53 pieces of silverware and 8 butter knives. All marked “Sterlingâ€. The silverware without the butter knives weighs 65 troy ounces. I think that’s a little over $1000 worth of silver, I paid the guy $50. I found the shoebox in another box he was unloading. I pulled it out, opened it and saw the silverware, checked it and saw it was all the same pattern, flipped a piece over and saw “Sterlingâ€. I asked him how much? He replied “How about $50†I offered $40 and he said no. So I handed him two $20’s and a $10, said thank you and went and locked it in my truck! It’s Kirk and Son silverware and it’s the Winslow pattern. It’s most of an 8 piece place setting. Next week it goes on ebay.

Awesome score mtnman. :)
I think that I will have to start checking out flea markets in my area. Maybe it is possible that I can find an awesome score on a silver art bar there.

:o WOW! :o
I wish I had that kind of luck. The best I have ever gotten are a few grams of gold jewelry for about 20% of spot at a yard sale.

What I cant believe is a guy as smart as you, being able to find deals like this from suckers, becomes a sucker yourself and actually uses ebay to resell it thereby losing a big chunk of your profit to a greedy consumer unfriendly corporation.
Put it on craigslist or just keep it, it is silver afterall and better than paper.
Nice score anyway.

Wow mtnman, what a great score ! I have collected sterling silver for many years and have NEVER gotten a deal such as you just have.
I still enjoy pulling out and looking at the fascinating artwork; especially of some of the pieces that are over 100 years old. I have dinnerware, cups, bowls, candle holders, jewelry and even some scrap sterling. It’s all good. Most I got from eBay auctions.
I believe in diversification and therefore rounds, bars of .999 are one. 90% silver coins is another. And sterling silver is a third.
If silver prices were to rise to astronomical prices, I wonder what the govt will want to tax the “profit†upon sale. Will sterling silver jewelry and dinnerware be heavily taxed ? Confiscated ? Nobody knows for certain. After all, they are artwork and NOT bullion. When Roosevelt “confiscated†the gold in the 30s, there was no mention of gold jewelry as far as I have read. Did the gold jewelry command the higher price when it was sold ? I would have imagined so. So it would follow that future sales of sterling silver would be in alignment with spot silver prices at the same time in the future.
I think you see what I am getting to. May not happen that way but I like the odds.
And don’t forget the ladies; all the ones I know absolutely love sterling silver in its many forms.
So it may be wise to have some sterling silver around to barter with in the future. Just my opinion.
Best wishes,
Agnut
P.S. Ponce squealed and it was then easy to hunt you down. Again, congrats.

Yea thatsd definitely a great find and a deal of the century, I love to collect sterling silver flatware like that and have been for years, I dont think I have ever found a deal quite as good as the one you did but I have found some pretty good ones at thrift stores and flea markets as well. I would say I find 2 or 3 sterling silver (not plated) forks or spoons at the various local thrift stores per week for 25 cents each, they often slip through the cracks and the workers toss them in with the junk flatware so you have to dig around a bit but they are in there for the taking now and then of you bother to look. I have foudn several hundred pieces over the last few years doing this, a few a week, 25 cents here and there, and have managed to put together a pretty nice collection of odd patterns. Neat stuff for sure.
I just hate to see people get robbed on ebay, they take so much profit and the people running that company are greedy idiots IMO, they screw both the sellers and buyers all the time and I dont know why people keep using that place as badly as it is managed.

Some of the guys who set up flea market tables happen upon these deals at tag sales or by cleaning out attics.
I may begin a new daily work of cleaning out attics if I have to quit my job. ;)
If Obama(No)care goes thru, I will either be able to opt out, go to jail, or quit my job. At some point they will usher in 100% digital money. I will not be participating. When every aspect of your life is racked through the computer (beast) system, it is past time to "come out of that unclean thing".
