I just want to say "Thanks" to everyone at the old website for the advice on debt and preps. I was never a big borrower, but you'all got mine and Mrs. Old's collective arses in gear and we paid down our mortgage agressively, partly by cashing out some of our "retirement." Today, I sent in my final payout amount. I got the check at the bank and the three tellers there said they were "jealous."

I'm 49 and no debt except what my town, state and federal governmnet borrow on my behalf.

It feels great! The bankers can eat my shorts.

That's awesome. The only obligation I have is $200K on a $700K home. I've been debating about selling and and just buying a house outright somewhere in the hills.

That is a very good move IMO. You can probably get a great property for 3-400k, not to mention 5-10k ounces of silver for the change...

Congrats Old Man Smith. :)

Hopefully in a few years from now, I will also be able to say that I am completely debt free.

Congratulations on escaping the yoke of slavery.

Do you really feel that what your town, state and local governments borrow is debt that you are responsible for?

You should be so proud! That is fantastic!

I've only got my mortgage, and I pay extra most months (unless I am not making enough money), so I will pay it off early, but I am far from being *really* debt free. I'm gonna say 15 years. Eeek.

49 and no debts - I am so envious.

No, I don't, but that doesn't mean that they won't try to make me pay it the buzzards.

Thanks for the kudos everyone, and I hope it doesn't seem like gloating. I figured that this was a good place (maybe the only place) to talk about it since the new GIm seems a bit stifled.

Many friends my age are so deep in debt, that if I were them I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

And this mean about 800 bucks a month that can go for real savings.

I just lit the fire (yes it is chilly tonight), and Mrs. Old and I are going to have a drinkey-drink and do a little bit of celebrating.

CONGRATS!

my neighbor, who's like 68 or 69, has been debt-free for 20 years. He's added a wood burning stove to his ranch house, and his winter bills do not exceed $120. That, and he gets plenty of exercise by chopping wood. Since then he told me he's owned a large boat, and now he owns a $20K Harley and a custom-made RV - these are all the money he saved by not giving them to bankers.

Near Knoxville you can buy a home for 50 g. Imagine you could buy a homestead for 100.

These sorts of threads are my favorites. Lots of talk here, but it is great to see when one of us walks the walk in real life. Good on you.

Since coming to GIM, and GSUS, (the second coming of GIM :)) I wrestled with paying off my mortgage like others here. Due to the great advice here, I focused my priorities and have my preps together, I just reached my PM goal and now my mortgage, small as it is, is square in the cross-hairs. My mortgage is my only debt and it is small relative to my net worth and income but it is a matter of principle (or principal). Thanks for the inspiration.
