MEXICO CITY, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A total of six policemen and one civilian died on Friday during a shooting in Ciudad Juarez on Mexico's border with Texas, the United States, local media reported.

A police officer told the local media that a group of policemen were attacked in the southeast of Ciudad Juarez when they were inspecting suspicious cargo vehicles allegedly transporting criminals.

One civilian was also killed in the exchange of fire, and there could be more deaths, the officer added.

Ciudad Juarez, located in Mexico's Chihuahua state, is considered the most violent city in the country, constantly affected by organized crime and drug trafficking.

More than 22,700 people have died in suspected drug-related attacks since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched military action against organized crime after taking office in late 2006.
