View Full Version : WTF - Second drilling rig overturns in Louisiana

I have a bad feeling about this.
(Reuters) - The Coast Guard said Friday it was responding to another oil drilling rig accident near Morgan City, Louisiana.
U.S. | Green Business
A "mobile inland drilling unit" overturned in the Charenton navigational channel south of U.S. Highway 90 near Morgan City, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
There were no reports of injuries, the Coast Guard said. The floating shallow-water rig was not immediately identified and the importance of the channel was not clear.
The vessel has a 20,000-gallon diesel fuel capacity, but the Coast Guard, citing officials on the scene, said there was no fuel leaking.
As a precaution, 500 feet of oil spill containment boom was deployed around the rig and an additional 500 feet were being brought in, the Coast Guard said in its statement.

Shit. Start looking for $5 gal gasoline this summer. Shit.

Not good. Weren't the initial reports of the other spill claiming there was no leak also?

FFs? There are too many things like this going on with the coal mines as well.
"Liberal" talk radio is going nuts over how we need to get off of fossil fuels (I agree, but first we need something to replace it.)
I think were headed for worse than expensive fuel.

it seems every major distaster in the last 10 years had really convenient timing. just when you think you're out... they pull you back in!

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave.
Just ruminating; does anyone think maybe there is some correlation between recent seismic activity and underwater oil rigs going awry?

I do. I have zero science behind it (obviously), but at the risk of sounding really dumb, here I go:
Think of the earth as human being. Now apply acupuncture. You can stick a needle in a toe and make something seemingly unrelated happen in the body. You can stick a needle in your ear to relieve back pain, or a needle in the hand to suppress the appetite.* Worse, we're drawing blood (oil) from this being and presumably the supply of blood will be depleted soon.
Or, maybe there is a whole underworld of creepy slimy beings living inside the core of the earth, and we are stealing their embryonic fluid, which to them is like our oxygen. Maybe they sent an incendiary device up a couple of the needles to try to put an end to it.
Could be either. Seriously. For the record, I was sober when I wrote this. ;D
* Just made up examples, I know next to nothing of acupuncture.

you guys are overreacting to that one...
I'd not rule out the possibility of a FF on the deepwater rig. But a bay rig? lol - no

THAT doesn't even sound like it was even set up over a well - more like it capsized in transit along the canal-
You don't drill in canals- same as you dont drill in roads.

I am stoned reading this but its a good read. Falls right in line with a show I watched tonight on the earth it it being the host and we the parasite. Theres also a book I read awhile back called the Gaia hypothesis, about the earth being a living breathing organism. Seems to me if it is the above then its pretty sick right now and showing it. From the waters to the weather.
Ok I'm off to applebees for a cheeseburger and a milkshake though. I'll contemplate this more on the ride :)

Either that or some sort of space ray? :imskerd:
Think of all the energy that was being consumed just a short year or so ago before the crash began.
Why wouldn't the underground goblins have attacked then?

Ooooh, second thought . . . because it last year, it set a world record for the deepest (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5h25r0uG9N2gVnNk6iyPR15OJ3QRQD9FDL9CO0) oil and gas well when it drilled 35,055 feet into the Gulf of Mexico.
The gooey goblins couldn't reach the other needles. They didn't go down far enough. And they've been plotting since last year.

So the one that blew was one of those really, really deep rigs like the Russians do?

Maybe this (http://www.nasdaq.com/aspx/stock-market-news-story.aspx?storyid=201004301652dowjonesdjonline000 630&title=congress-seeks-info-from-halliburton-on-sunken-rig-that-caused-spill) has something to do with it. Remember these guys?
Congress Seeks Info From Halliburton On Sunken Rig That Caused Spill
A U.S. congressional committee Friday requested that Halliburton Co. (HAL) provide information related to its work aboard a rig that caught fire and sank last week in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in a massive oil spill.
In a letter to Halliburton Chief Executive David Lesar, the Committee On Energy and Commerce requested a May 5 briefing with the oilfield services company and asked for company documents related to its work aboard the rig. The request is part of an ongoing investigation into the explosion and fire on a Transocean Ltd. (RIG) owned and operated rig that critically injured three people and left another 11 missing and feared dead. The rig was drilling a well for oil giant BP PLC (BP).
A report in Friday's edition of The Wall Street Journal identified the cementing process used to seal the well as a possible cause of the spill. The cementing process is supposed to prevent oil and natural gas from escaping by filling gaps between the outside of the well pipe and the inside of the hole bored into the ocean floor.
In a news release Friday, Halliburton said it continues to support and cooperate with the ongoing investigations into the rig incident. The Houston company said it is assisting in efforts to identify the factors that may have led up to the disaster, but that "it is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any specific causal issues."
Halliburton said that it had finished cementing a production casing for the well 20 hours before the rig caught fire and eventually sank and had tested the integrity of that production casing.

Remember these guys?
I imagine these offshore oil wells will eventually be abandoned by then-bankrupt Corporations and us taxpayers will be fighting the leaking wells then.
Oceans are now our septic tank.

UPDATE: Another Rig Has Turned Over, But It Was Defunct And Contained NO Oil

Second update: A spokesperson from the Coast Guard explained that a barge overturned while transporting a defunct rig to a scrap heap.
The only oil at risk is the fuel contained in the barge -- less than 200 gallons.
In other words, this headline from HuffPo is a bit much:
Here's what you need to know about the real disaster >
Update: Here's the Coast Guard's announcement:
MORGAN CITY, La. -- The Coast Guard is responding Friday to an overturned mobile inland drilling unit (MIDU) in the Charenton navigational canal south of Highway 90.
The MIDU has a 20,000-gallon diesel fuel capacity, and while there is no current estimate on how much fuel was on board at the time of the incident, on-scene Coast Guard pollution investigators have determined that the rig is not leaking fuel at this time. As a precaution, 500 feet of containment boom has been deployed around the rig, with an additional 500 feet arriving to provide a secondary string within the canal.
The Coast Guard has established a safety zone 1,000 yards on either side of the incident, prohibiting vessel traffic from entering the area without permission from the Captain of the Port. A salvage plan is currently being developed for Coast Guard approval.
There are no reported injuries and the Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
Original post: Hopefully this turns out to be a big nothing... But Reuters is reporting that the Coast Guard says it's responding to a second Louisiana overturned rig in the Charenton Navigational Channel.

Back in the mid 2000's I argued with a couple people that said oil would collapse our society. I offered the fact I believed we would have a financial collapse first. Maybe it's time for them to be right and oil will be our final undoing and bring us to the great war.
So many disasters, so little time left
