US has 5,113 launch-ready nukes

Mon, 03 May 2010 21:51:50 GMT

The United States has officially announced the size of its nuclear arsenal, saying it now possesses 5,113 operational nuclear weapons.

"Increasing the transparency of global nuclear stockpiles is important to non-proliferation efforts" and more progress on arms control, AFP quoted a Pentagon statement as saying on Monday.

The figure only refers to operational warheads and excludes outdated nuclear missiles and nuclear weapons slated for dismantlement, which are estimated to number around 4,600, Reuters reported, citing the figure from the Federation of American Scientists.

The US government says it has reduced its nuclear weapons stockpile by about 84 percent from its maximum level of 31,225 warheads at the end of fiscal year 1967.

The US government last revealed the size of its nuclear arsenal in 1961.

Who says the U.S. dollar isn't backed by precious metals. Just happens to be plutonium.

So back in the day, the maximum level of warheads we had was 31,225? At that level, we could nuke every country in the world over 100 times! I remember a few years ago hearing that WA state had more nukes than China, England and France combined. I wonder if we'll ever start using them again?

I hope not as I don’t exactly fancy myself as a tiny little glass crystal shard.

Still with 5,113 nukes still operational how many times can we nuke the world over I wonder.

The only reason we have less today is because the package delivers a bigger punch. We simply don't NEED 31K warheads when 5K will do the same job.

And who says .gov is inefficient? :sarc:

Nukes aren't a one size fits all device, there is a specific size to suit a rogue nations needs.
Say Israel needs to buy a nuke to remove a sovereign nations right to produce nuclear power...they will purchase an X kiloton nuke.
Or if this state needs one to just burn women and children just for pleasure, X kiloton
And if they need to protect thier fiat printing press against the Goy, and so on...

Plus with all the crap to knock them out of the sky you have to figure most of them won't get to their intended destination.
