OK. I give up. I am admitting that I am a total dumba$$ on the bagel issue. I am admitting my total ignorance on the bagel issue. Will someone please answer this for me..........

What do bagels have to do with Jewish people?

This is just an innocent question. I am not trying to start anything here. Apparently some people on this forum take offense to cream cheese and bagel statements when it relates to Jewish people. Like I said, I am admitting my ignorance here.

The bagel has been a part of Jewish cuisine for at least 400 years. According to Leo Rosten's The Joys of Yiddish, there are references to it as far back as Poland in 1610

Thanks for that. That is starting to make sense to me when I saw earlier posts talking about posters "smelling bagels". I really did not know that.

History for the Bagel impaired.

Bagels have become a popular bread product in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, especially in cities with large Jewish populations, many with different ways of making bagels.[2] Like other bakery products, bagels are available (either fresh or frozen, and often in many flavour varieties) in many major supermarkets in those countries.

Contrary to common legend, the bagel was not created in the shape of a stirrup to commemorate the victory of Poland’s King Jan Sobieski over the Ottoman Turks in 1683. It was actually invented much earlier in Kraków, Poland, as a competitor to the Bublik, a lean bread of wheat flour designed for Lent. In the 16th and first half of the 17th centuries, the bajgiel became a staple of the Polish national diet.[5]

There was a tradition among many observant Jewish families to make bagels on Saturday evenings at the conclusion of the Sabbath. Due to Jewish Sabbath restrictions, they were not permitted to cook during the period of the Sabbath and, compared with other types of bread, bagels could be baked very quickly as soon as it ended.

I wanted to be smited so bad because it makes me a stronger person each time that I get smited. I want to prove to everybody that smites do not affect me. It is more like a challenge to smite me because for some reason, I tend to be a "smite-challenged" poster and I have to work a little harder to get my smites. Since I started my "smite campaign", I am doing very well in getting my smites. My goal is to also become the greatest "smite whore" on GSUS. If I can get at least 1000 smites by December 31, 2010, then that will help me with my goal of being the greatest "smite whore" on GSUS.

In the end, the posters (and guests) on GSUS will ultimately judge me by my words on my posts. They will not necessarily judge me on the number of smites (and applauds) that I have accumulated.

I am a secure person and smites do not hurt me. I wear my smites with pride because I am a secure enough person to wear my smites with pride. ;D

Oh BTW Please smite me Awoke. Please help me reach my goal of becoming the greatest "smite whore" on GSUS. ;D

Boston.com: Passenger removed from plane at Logan
Man, 37, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct (http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2011/01/04/man_arrested_at_logan_airport_on_disorderly_conduc t_charges/)

[January 4, 2011] Flight 2025 was waiting to depart from Gate 21, headed for Reagan National Airport. Milatovic, who had been visiting family in Hudson, allegedly would not comply with a flight attendant’s instructions, refusing to take his seat and refusing to place his carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment, State Police said.

One passenger also reported hearing a noise coming from a plastic bag that Milatovic was carrying when he finally put it in the overhead bin. Another passenger also reported that Milatovic made a furtive movement and a quick phone call, stating, “I have boarded.’’

Troopers removed Milatovic from the plane.

A State Police dog checked the plastic bag he had put in the overhead compartment and his other luggage. The dog’s inspection had “negative results,’’ State Police said.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said there was “no indication’’ that the case was terrorism-related.

A search of the plastic bag uncovered a wallet, keys, a hat, a bagel with cream cheese, and other food items, he said.

Procopio said troopers and the airplane’s captain formed the opinion that Milatovic’s actions caused unnecessary alarm to the passengers and interfered with the ability of the crew to operate the flight.

TIME: Bagels: An American Tragedy (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2080346,00.html#ixzz1R3swNu9r)
June 29, 201

[June 29, 201]
...And yet it was corrupted. It was a displaced person, a refugee, and it lost its identity in its travels. It was compromised to its core, and what's worse, it advertised itself as a symbol of everything that it no longer was. Bagels are to this day referred to as New York bagels, which means Jewish bagels, though they are neither, denuded of all their tradition and taste. It's the story of the Jew who comes to New York City, builds a community, starts a hardware business, brings Yiddish to the gossip columns, and then his children marry blondes and send their kids to Choate. The bagel is a symbol of assimilation at any cost — which is one reason so many old-timers, like the great New York Times food critic Mimi Sheraton, are so passionately critical of them.

And H&H, rest in peace, was the most insidious force of all in the bagel's degradation. While it was understandable that Illinois moms might want big, puffy bagels to make tuna sandwiches on, no one in the 1960s would have foreseen a day when New Yorkers preferred puffy bagels and even (gasp!) knew no other kind. And yet that is the place we've come to. As part of the complete corruption of the old ways, the bagel has become not only bigger and softer, but sweeter too. The old bagel was a symbol of hardship and scarcity, its distinctive malty, salty taste inseparable from the austerity of its origins. The new bagel is an oafish, candied monstrosity engineered for children and lazy appetites.

The hamburger of old has come back, thanks to a spate of great new chains. Heritage pigs and heritage vegetables, those coelacanths of the culinary world, have returned. Is it asking too much for someone, somewhere, to bring back the small, dense, perishable bagels in their glorious original form in New York City? Then at least some good would come of the closing of H&H. It wasn't their fault, after all, that the bagel found success only by losing its soul.
