There is a major change being implemented on the 5th of May 2010. The last remaining Root DNS servers are being switched to a new version of DNS.
DNS - Domain Name Services. Basically this is the cataloging and direction finding system the internet uses. A Domain name server is kind of like a road map book or index that is refered to to determine the physcal location of web pages, files etc on the internet so they can be requested and then presented to the internet user.
The new DNS system creates more traffic on the Inernet which might cause slow downs on some networks.
Most devices that use DNS can handle this but some devices might need upgrading with a new firmware or OS to cope with the larger DNS traffic volumes.
Businesses might also have to factor in this increase in bandwith usage for their internet services. It will probably only affect larger companies in this way.
What can you do? Not much really.
But to be helpful you might want to flash your ADSL Modem with any new firmwares or look at any computers/servers you have that may need a DNS upgrade or they may just need a setting to be tweaked to cope with the larger DNS packets.
Alternatively you might want to treat it like Y2K and do nothing.
If you want to read more about it, this is all I have: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/itdojo/?p=1713&tag=nl.e040
Do I understand it..... hmmmm nope not really but if my customers have no internet tomorrow they might be in trouble because I am off for the day. :conf:
