Crime in New Orleans spikes as unemployment checks and food stamps run out

May 7, 2010
All over the country in places like New Orleans unemployment checks are running out. Food stamps are in the same boat. Many families are trying to make ends meet. Workers nationwide who've exhausted their maximum 99 weeks of unemployment benefits face life with no meaningful income.

6.7 million Americans, nearly 46 percent of the nation's unemployed, have been jobless for 27 weeks or more. Another 1.2 million are still discouraged and no longer looking.

While that could change quickly in an election year, Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., who supported previous extensions, told Bloomberg News Service last week that 99 weeks is enough.

Perfect timing, just as the weather is getting nice. Crime always goes up, in the hot summer months.

This is going to be an interest summer.

Aren't food stamps & unemployment insurance independent of each other?

They are in Ohio. If you're on unemployment, you probably bring in too much money to get food stamps. Depending of coarse on your family situation.

Food Stamps don't run out, unless you get a job/other income or commit crime.

After unemployment benefits run out a financially broke person then goes on welfare. Exactly how that is handled is different county by county I think.

Food-stamp tally nears 40 million, sets record

May 7, 2010
1:28pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps -- the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update.

Food stamps are the primary federal anti-hunger program, helping poor people buy food. Enrollment is highest during times of economic distress. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent, the government said on Friday.

The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.

"This is the highest share of the U.S. population on SNAP/food stamps," said the anti-hunger group Food Research and Action Center, using the new name for food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Research suggests that one in three eligible people are not receiving ... benefits."

Enrollment has set a record each month since reaching 31.78 million in December 2008. USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

Black Blade: It would appear that the food stamp roles just keep growing week after week setting new records. This Obama Depression will get much worse as the unemployment rate rises reaching yet another new record. As the global economy collapses under the weight of the credit crises and the collpase of EU nations and the Euro, the United States is not far behind - in fact the US taxpayer will be paying for the European Union bailouts starting with Greece (through the IMF).

thanks blade, is too real.

Is possible the U.S. would be topping some list with those kind of numbers.

I know a distinguished individual that tried to get into the food program. While black america sat in the waiting room with their gold necklaces, brand new levi's with the tag still stapled to their asses, brand new cell phones discussing all the new (c)rap ringtones my friend was called to the cubicle. He was denied because he did not bring slivers of information that was not required, I can recall detail of his scenario but it was basically up to the worker to allow or deny. I guess if he had one if them new ring tones and a flashy gold necklace it would have made a difference. May I mention that he was white?

He says that he told her (the cubicle worker) he only brought in 185.00 for the previous month before tax but couldn't document it because he had not received payment only sent invoices. She told him to call churches and she will see what it available, have a good day.

He later received a denial in the mail that said he exceeded the income level to acquire into the food program.

I did see the paperwork he submitted and he clearly should qualify by the standards. I guess if your white and don't have a gold chain, diamond rings, the latest Nike shoes, the latest (C)rap ringtones you can't qualify.

I will bet that the food program is not counting the Caucasian, Asian, Japanese, and the many other (mexican) populations that do get into the food program, my story is just to enlighten you, it isn't real but think about them fictitious numbers again.

Cut the peoples food off and then testing will begin in a few cities and will be negatively spun on MSM.

Here in California, your last name has to be Hernandez to get food stamps or assistance.

I was behind a woman the other day at a Publix, buying all kinds of stuff,( the cigarette and booze she paid for in cash) paid with a FS Card, when I walked out into the parking lot to leave, she was packing everything into the back of a black Escalade..... :lol

The bottom line bare bones if even available Escalade is 98K, I don't think any were available without options unless special order.
