A former roommate is the main suspect in a disturbing assault that has a former Winnipeg man in hospital in Regina, recovering from gruesome injuries, the victim's mother says.
'He has a very long road ahead of him.'—Renee LaFortune
Dustin LaFortune, 26, has been in Regina General Hospital since April 16. It is not known how he came to be in Regina, as his last confirmed home was in Calgary where he worked for a moving company.
LaFortune's mother, Renee LaFortune of Victoria, said her son was held captive for months and tortured.
"He has been beaten, he has been mutilated and starved," she said.

Another relative, who didn't want to be identified, confirmed this. "His statement indicated his roommate did it," the relative said Saturday.
Renee LaFortune said the roommate had called one of her son's relatives just two days before he was dropped off at the Regina hospital. That person claimed LaFortune was fine and was in Leduc, Alta., just south of Edmonton, she said.
LaFortune's family members have been in Regina almost every weekend since learning of his injuries. According to the family, the man looks as if he had been tortured.
He was burned and stabbed, and portions of his lips and tongue were cut off. He has also suffered significant weight loss.
Relatives said LaFortune was not able to tell police how he got to Regina, nor where he was assaulted.
LaFortune is battling an infection and recently had a bout with pneumonia. However, he's reported to be getting better and asking for food. He is on a feeding tube.
Winnipeg family
His family hopes LaFortune will soon be well enough to move to Winnipeg, closer to family and friends. LaFortune has a daughter from a previous relationship, as well as three brothers.
He has been co-operative with police, despite concerns raised by some family members that he would be reluctant to talk about what happened.
Regina police will say only that the case is under investigation by its major crimes unit, and they are proceeding on the basis that LaFortune was the victim of an aggravated assault.
He has no gang or other connections to the criminal underworld, his mother said.
"He is never going to be the same … he has a very long road ahead of him," she said.
