Jefferson County geometry teacher uses wrong example to teach angles --- assassination of President Barack Obama

By Marie Leech and Carol Robinson -- The Birmingham News
May 18, 2010, 6:30AM

A Jefferson County teacher picked the wrong example when he used asテつ*sassinating President Barテつ*ack Obama as a way to teach angles to his geomeテつ*try students.

Someone alerted authoテつ*rities and the Corner High School math teacher was questioned by the Secret Service, but was not taken into custody or charged with any crime.

"We did not find a credible threat," said Roy Sexテつ*ton, special agent in charge of Birmingham's Secret Service office. "As far as the Secret Service is concerned, we looked into it, we talked to the gentleman and we have closed our investigation."

Sexton said he generally doesn't discuss threat cases, but confirmed his ofテつ*fice investigated the inciテつ*dent. No federal charges followed the probe.

The teacher was apparテつ*ently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.

"He was talking about angles and said, 'If you're in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,' " said Joseph Brown, a senior in the geometry class.

Efforts to reach the teacher for comment Monテつ*day were unsuccessful.

Superintendent Phil Hammonds said the teacher remains at work, and there are no plans for termination.

"We are going to have a long conversation with him about what's appropriate," Hammonds said. "It was extremely poor judgment on his part, and a poor choice of words."

Caroline Polk, the parent of a ninth-grader at the school, said she doesn't beテつ*lieve the teacher ought to be fired.

"We all make mistakes, and we should be able to learn from our mistakes," she said. "What he said was just wrong and inappropriテつ*ate. Everyone's got their own opinions, but we have to be aware of our surテつ*roundings. At this point, it just needs to be handled in a way that it won't be reテつ*peated."

I bet if the same teacher used the same example for the last administration, it wouldn't be considered "wrong".

I am not sure what else I can post here without having someone knock on my door, so . . . I'll just stop there.

hahahaha student "I'm not getting this whole angle, parallel thing" teacher "well for example imagine if you were trying to ass assinate the president..."

What an idiot

Parallel lines and angles are all fine and well, but without factoring in things like elevation, weight, muzzle velocity, and trajectory his calculations wouldn't hit the side of a barn 100 yards out. No wonder this country sucks.

Cant forget about wind, humidity, temperature and the spin of the earth too! ;D

Windage, Elevation and Temp, and of course knowing your weapon's ballistics

I've never imagined ass assassinating the president. Sounds kinky.

Why not? He's ass-inated ours pretty well - and he's just getting started.

well, maybe history will repeat itself and some teacher will use both Bush & Obama in a geometry example.

the teacher showed bad judgment. i think this belongs in a history class, not a math class. it's hard enough to learn trigonometry without the extra confusion of a politically charged example.

i wonder if it's possible to get a picture of what he wrote on the blackboard, or a picture of the assignment. or a recording.

because it was turned into the proverbial "Federal case", they end up burning up a whole bunch more gasoline chasing this around. i would say that's bad judgment too.

Should have just used the Kennedy assassination - the 'other' white bread....

You can't have every Tom, Dick or Harry planning to assassinate the president. Those kind of decisions are left to the CIA. ;D

This must be one of the last Geometry teachers who even bother to try and teach students Geometry. Well I am sure he learned how to approach Geometry with his pupils from the secret service encounter...
