Mexico seeks US ban on assault guns

Fri, 21 May 2010 12:53:25 GMT

Mexican President Felipe Calderon says Washington should make efforts to stop the flow of weapons to Mexico, urging the US Congress to outlaw assault guns.

"There is one issue where Mexico needs your cooperation. And that is stopping the flow of assault weapons and other deadly arms across the border," Calderon said on Thursday addressing a joint session of Congress, Reuters reported.

Calderon attributed the skyrocketing drug violence in recent years to the 2004 lifting of a ban on assault weapons in the US.

According to the Mexican president the Central American nation has captured around 75,000 guns and assault weapons in the last three years. More than 80 percent of the arms, he said, originated from the United States. Calderon noted that there were more than 7,000 gun shops along the border.

"I would ask Congress to help us, with respect, and to understand how important it is for us that you enforce current laws to stem the supply of these weapons to criminals and consider reinstating the assault weapons ban," he said.

Since taking office in late 2006, Calderon, using the army, has waged an all-out war on drug cartels in Mexico. Since then, the drug violence has taken the lives of more than 23,000 people, with no sign of an end to the killings.

The drug runners get most of their weapons from the corrupt Mexican government. How about we ban "assault guns" from all governments (and not the people)?

I propose we make a deal with Mexico. They keep their illegals, and we'll keep our guns. We'll build a giant concrete fence along the southern border to make sure none of these dangerous non-automatic rifles get smuggled that way, and none of the illegal drug pushers and wetbacks make it this way. How bout it Mexico? Or, if you don't like that idea, why don't you keep that pie hole under your nose shut!

Here's a better deal... Calderon, secure YOUR damn borders!

I'm half Mex/Italian mix (don't ask it just happened, kinda like an Irish/British accident), and I still have family I visit now and then in CDJ-yes that hellhole) What p*sses me off is that even the U.S. Patrol/Customs is putting more effort into checking your car for weapons before you get to the Mexican side than the Mexican Gov't. Once you get to the Mexico port of entry (at least in CDJ anyways) it's all up to a little luck of a random green or red revision stop light you come to, get green (75% of the time) and you're welcome to Mexico with all the truck load of weapons if you have such luck...
Great war on the cartels Mr. Shill Calderon!!!! Pinche Hipocrita. >:(
