But because of depth and dispersants, this disaster is different. Its true horror lies under the surface. While the local economy will be shattered by an impact that will continue for months and years, it is what lies beyond that worries me.
Marine life here will ebb away, dragged down by the toxic load, and generations to come will not know what it was once like. They will have nothing with which to compare it. The record-breaking fishes, the wonder of the deep coral gardens, the teeming, healthy productivity of the oyster and shrimp grounds will all slip into a somehow unbelievable past.
