Too unfit to run: Two-year-old who smokes 40 cigarettes a day puffs away on a toy truck.

Comments (-) Add to My Stories Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver.

But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself.

The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate.

Truck on bad habits: Ardi Rizal sits smoking on his favourite toy at home in Musi Banyuasin, Indonesia
But, despite local officials' offer to buy the Rizal family a new car if the boy quits, his parents feel unable to stop him because he throws massive tantrums if they don't indulge him.

His mother, Diana, 26, wept: 'He's totally addicted. If he doesn't get cigarettes, he gets angry and screams and batters his head against the wall. He tells me he feels dizzy and sick.'

Ardi will smoke only one brand and his habit costs his parents £3.78 a day in Musi Banyuasin, in Indonesia's South Sumatra province.
But in spite of this, his fishmonger father Mohammed, 30, said: 'He looks pretty healthy to me. I don't see the problem.'
Ardi's youth is the extreme of a disturbing trend. Data from the Central Statistics Agency showed 25 per cent of Indonesian children aged three to 15 have tried cigarettes, with 3.2 per cent of those active smokers.
The percentage of five to nine year olds lighting up increased from 0.4 per cent in 2001 to 2.8 per cent in 2004, the agency reported.
Gun smoke: Four-stone Ardi puffs one of 40 cigarettes he smokes a day while toting a water pistol
A video of a four-year-old Indonesian boy blowing smoke rings appeared briefly on YouTube in March, prompting outrage before it was removed from the site.
Child advocates are speaking out about the health damage to children from second-hand smoke, and the growing pressure on them to smoke in a country where one-third of the population uses tobacco and single cigarettes can be bought for a few cents.
Seto Mulyadi, chairman of Indonesia's child protection commission, blames the increase on aggressive advertising and parents who are smokers.
'A law to protect children and passive smokers should be introduced immediately in this country,' he said.
A health law passed in 2009 formally recognizes that smoking is addictive, and an anti-smoking coalition is pushing for tighter restrictions on smoking in public places, advertising bans and bigger health warnings on cigarette packages.
Puff baby: Ardi blows smoke while trundling around on his truck
But a bill on tobacco control has been stalled because of opposition from the tobacco industry.
The bill would ban cigarette advertising and sponsorship, prohibit smoking in public, and add graphic images to packaging.

Benny Wahyudi, a senior official at the Industry Ministry, said the government had initiated a plan to try to limit the number of smokers, including dropping production to 240 billion cigarettes this year, from 245 billion in 2009.
'The government is aware of the impact of smoking on health and has taken efforts, including lowering cigarette production, increasing its tax and limiting smoking areas,' he said.
Mr Mulyadi said a ban on advertising is key to putting the brakes on child and teen smoking.

'If cigarette advertising is not banned, there will be more kids whose lives are threatened because of smoking,' he said.
Ubiquitous advertising hit a bump last month when a cigarette company was forced to withdraw its sponsorship of pop star Kelly Clarkson's concert following protests from fans and anti-tobacco groups.
Always having a break: Ardi, who is rarely seen without a cigarette, insists on the same brand, costing £78 a day
However, imposing a non-smoking message will be difficult in Indonesia, the world's third-largest tobacco consumer.
Tubagus Haryo Karbyanto, a member of the National Commission of Tobacco Control, said Indonesia must also address the social conditions that lead to smoking, such as family influence and peer pressure.
'The promotion of health has to be integrated down to the smallest units in our society, from public health centres and local health care centres to the family,' he was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Globe on Friday.
Health Minister Endang Sedyaningsih conceded turning young people off smoking will be difficult in a country where it is perceived as positive because cigarette companies sponsor everything from scholarships to sporting events.
'This is the challenge we face in protecting youth from the dangers of smoking,' she said in a statement on the ministry's website.

If parents are buying their two year olds cigarettes, they have more problems than cigarette advertising.

Banning smoking for children under the age of at least 16 would be a good start, IMO. Education is key, adults who choose to smoke are one thing, but buying your two year old cigarettes? :o ??? wtf?

If cigs are so bad(And they are) why not just make them illegal? They made pot illegal. Must be the billions they take in in tax revenue

This is disgusting. There really are people in the world who don't know not to give your kid cigarettes?

Worst yet, they are offering the family a new car just to do what is common sense by making their 2 year old quit smoking.

Totally fucked up.

One of the most important thing Christopher Columbus was interested in was tobacco. People crossed oceans and founded new countries to get reliable sources of tobacco. How come it's in such disfavor now?

Spare me the emotional arguments. The question is why is it only in the last fifty years that it has fallen from favor.

It's not true. it's fukkin photoshop and BS. I can find a lot of sources on Google for Onion articles too. Or even celebrity gossip.

Just because it's on Google doesn't make it true.

A two year old bitching about headaches because he needs a smoke??

Gimme a fukkin break. Sorry, two year olds aren't generally able to make connections like that.

Smoking has had its PR problems before, especially because of the smell. I believe $$$$. Pharma companies can make a ton of money on smoking cessation products in addition to selling lots of additional drugs to old folks who might not have lived so long had they smoked lots of cigarettes.

It can't be that, they could make billions in taxation revenue from the legalization of drugs if they wanted.

Cause the tobacco industry including all the farmers have a strong lobby, and besides, congress doesn't listen to the public, only when they want the votes, the other 360 days of the year; it's all the lobbyists talking in their ear

Cigs had to be demonized to be taxed, just like alcohol.
This made taxes possible. You are committing a state sin. Now pay up. It's for the children.

Amazing! These people must believe in a very literal interpretation of reincarnation. Unlike the abstract sort we think of here in the west.

I've never seen a cynical and jaded baby before.

One good thing is the little dude seems to have excellent eye hand coordination. :)

It seems to me that some people here are hell-bent-for-leather to deny the possibilty that this could be real.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a legitmate piece of documentation, I'm just saying that unless you can disprove it, why get so involved in trying to convince other GSurs that it not real?

The video shows it's real. Plain as day. That little toddler is smoking like a 50 year old.

After watching the video, I suspect the child is revered by the family as a direct reincarnation of some well respected ancestor.

From my western perspective I imagine the kid is reflecting the beliefs and expectations of the people around him.

Interesting... the toddler really does seem old way beyond his years, even though he can barely talk in language, he shows a sort sardonic casualness to the world around him. Aware but indifferent.

Maybe it has something to do with this:

Even from the WHO:

Although i could argue that 'Tattoo' (Fantasy Island) probably doesnt have internet, or cable tv. So this marketing theory might not work in this scenario.

I cant help seeing the uncanny resemblance...

I stand corrected.

While I'm not sure about the "old soul" theory, it does make a certain amount of sense to me.

I don't know why it would be such a hard thing for me to believe at first... considering my friend and I used to steal packs of his mom's Parliaments and smoke them out in his yard...

...in kindergarten.

AND is the digital consumer division of Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), operating the digital assets of Associated Newspapers Ltd. and Northcliffe Media, as well as key online classified sites such as Jobsite.co.uk, FindaProperty.com & Primelocation.com.

Formed by the merger of Associated New Ventures, Associated New Media and Northcliffe Electronic Publishing in May 2006, AND has 240+ websites, with a monthly reach of 40% of the UK internet population.

Seems like a legit news outlet to me.

An old soul... this is the exact feeling I have. His mannerisms just seem odd for 2yr old. I agree, the family must believe he is a reincarnation. Heck, I think I'm starting to believe it.

That kid started smoking at 18 months old. 18 months... When I was 18 months old I had just discovered words and was still too busy chewing lead paint off the bars of my crib to even notice the smoking cigarettes hanging out of my parents mouths a they coochie cooed me into my lifelong belief in a central parental autocratic authoritarian big Daddy government dependency.

This is one powerful mythology at work. We westerners tell our babies right from the very beginning, "ooh you precious little baby you, you know nothing. You are so stupid and delicate and dependent that we can't even look away for a second. We parents must protect you, we must make everything around you safe, safe from your stupid grasping little hands."

And if a parent does happen to look away for a second and Jr. dies, the parent is found guilty of negligence by the community, as well as by themselves and imprisoned back to the crib, where they collect welfare sustenance for a lifelong mental disability. :oo-->

Nah! What the hell am I saying? Our particular western religio-socio-political problems are all caused by the Joos.... :)

The story is real. I have my doubts that the kid is only two, as he looks older. He may already have a thyroid condition, which is causing him to retain water, and makes him look bloated, especially his head.

There are no words to describe the irresponsibility of his parrents. This must be some kind of new low that does not involve direct violence, but it most certainly is abuse, or worse.

His parrents should be sterilized.

TRUE STORY:

An old friend of mine (50) said, when he was a boy his grandpa was in the doctors office being examined, he was in his 80's at the time and lived to be 96. He had been smoking all his life and the doctor scolded him about his smoking habit and how BAD it was for his health. Grandpa turned to the doctor and said (in typical old man voice) "You mean I'm going to die?"

My friend started laughing out loud as the irony hit him and was given a dirty look from both the doctor and nurse.

Maybe smoking is bad for your health, but not everyone.

That's sickening. I've never seen a jaded baby before. You get the impression his parents cater to his every whim, maybe even worship him. With parents like that, smoking at 2 years old may be the least of his problems.

I'm having second thoughts about this video. This kid handles a cigarette far better than any 5 five year old could ever handle a crayon. Two year olds don't have this level of manual dexterity.

Something isn't on the lever here! I'm changing my bet to B.S. - - what we're seeing here isn't being presented to us straight up.

It is such an outrageous joke, they should show this kid drinking a beer with his right hand or his foot, while he seems to be smoking.

I'm not buying it.
