Dragons

Guys, give me a few references why "dragons" are such popular topic. There's currently 3-4 movies about dragons, animated etc. including Avatar, and including Disney, so it's gotta be propaganda.

Are they related to the gargoyles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargoyle)?

(actually I'm not sure... I haven't seen any movies like that advertised, but I don't watch TV either)
