Would-be robber pulls baseball bat on clerk, who pulls gun on perp

JEFFERSONVILLE – A man, armed with a baseball bat, who tried to hold up a pharmacy Wednesday afternoon, got more than he expected when he told the clerk to, “Give me all the drugs” and the employee pulled a licensed pistol out and asked him, “Do you really want to do this?”

The man, who was wearing a blue jumpsuit and dark ski mask, fled the Pharmacy at Route 52 in the Village of Jeffersonville. Robert Roach, 55, was found at his residence at 4726 Route 52 near Lake Jefferson.

Roach was charged with attempted robbery in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and menacing in the second degree. Roach was sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

Nabbed robber's 'Give money, I gun' note puzzled Fridley teller

"Give money, I gun."

That grammatically challenged note from a bank robber in Fridley got an ex-con's bank robbery off on the wrong foot -- and it only got worse for him from there.

The holdup of the TCF Bank in the Cub Foods at 250 57th Avenue NE. occurred Thursday and resulted in the less-than-cooperative apprehension and charging of Joe Nathan Michael, 47, of Fridley.

According to the criminal complaint:

Michael gave the teller the sparsely worded note, and she couldn't understand what he wanted. He told her to give him all the money and not to push any buttons.

As the teller fidgeted with the keys to unlock her cash drawer, Michael reminded her not to push any buttons and intimated that he was armed by putting his left hand in his jacket pocket.

"Do you want me to shoot you?" he said.

"No," she told him before opening the drawer and giving him $1,991, recorded bait bills and a concealed electronic tracking device.

Michael asked for a bag, but the teller said she didn't have one. He made do by jamming the money in his jacket and fleeing on foot.

Police, provided with a description, saw Michael about a block from the bank and standing at a bus stop. Officers ordered him to take his hands out of his pocket and hit the ground.

Michael refused, prompting the officers to take him down and cuff him. The money, bait bills and tracking device were found on him.

Michael appeared in federal court in St. Paul on Friday and was ordered held until a hearing Wednesday.

His criminal history includes convictions in Minneapolis for felony robbery, felony domestic assault, and gross misdemeanors for domestic assault and assault.

Eh, it could have ended better. I would have asked the crook "are you threatening my life?" and if/when said perp responded in the affirmative, then the light's green, shoot the bastard dead where he stands.
