View Full Version : Wal Mart slashing prices on junk food and poison

NEW YORK – Wal-Mart is counting on $1 ketchup bottles and sub-$4 cases of Coke to get its low-price mojo back.

The sharp cuts at its U.S. Walmart stores, which came ahead of Memorial Day weekend, have already pushed rivals such as Target into price wars. And the markdowns are expected to keep coming throughout the summer.

They're one of the boldest moves the world's largest retailer is making to turn around sluggish business at its U.S. namesake chain and win back shoppers from rivals. The cuts aren't across the store but target 22 foods and other essentials at an average savings of 30 percent — splashy enough to get attention and perhaps change perceptions.

The world's largest retailer is also restoring items like certain soups and laundry detergent it stopped carrying when it tried to declutter its stores. It's also pushing more basic clothing such as socks and underwear after putting too much focus on trendy items that didn't sell.

Wal-Mart was one of the few beneficiaries when the Great Recession began, as shoppers traded down to save money. Now it's having trouble keeping customers in a slowly recovering economy. Cash-strapped shoppers are looking elsewhere for better deals such as dollar stores and local grocery chains. And some wealthier customers, feeling more flush, are starting to head back to the mall.

Wal-Mart, which generated more than $400 billion in revenue in 2009, has blamed stubbornly high unemployment and tight credit for adding even more financial strain on its blue-collar customers, some of whom have limited access to financial services and are running out of unemployment benefits.

But it also takes part of the blame for four straight quarters of declines in revenue at Walmart stores open at least a year. That's a key indicator of a retailer's health.

"Wal-Mart is all about price, and they're all about one-stop shopping. Those are the key ingredients," said Bob Buchanan, a former retail analyst who now teaches finance at Saint Louis University. "Now, you kind of scratch your head and wonder if either of them are true."

"Wal-Mart has made a lot of noise, but customers want to see it in the stores," he continued. "This action is long overdue. They need to drive that message hard."

Deloris Harris, 72, of Ridgeway, S.C., said she pulled back from food shopping at Wal-Mart in the last year because chains such as Food Lion were offering even better deals.

"Some of the stuff isn't that cheap," said Harris, who picked up 10 ears of corn for $2 and hamburger rolls for 99 cents at Food Lion on Friday. But the 24-pack of Coke for $5 at Wal-Mart caught her attention Thursday night on a run to buy Tylenol. She grabbed it and planned to go back Friday to pick up deals on cleaning supplies.

Wal-Mart acknowledged during its latest conference call with investors that its moves to carry fewer items went too far. It's now replenishing 300 it had dropped. Analysts estimated that Wal-Mart pared up to 15 percent of its inventory, sending shoppers elsewhere in search of their favorite brands.

Wal-Mart is still making big profits. Its first-quarter net income rose 10 percent, fueled by cost-cutting and growth overseas. Wal-Mart's thinking: Lower costs let it lower prices, which in turn should drive up revenue and that money would be invested to yield more cost savings.

In fact, Wal-Mart is bearing the cost of some of the deep price cuts, not its suppliers, according to Bill Pecoriello, an analyst who heads ConsumerEdge Research LLC, based on discussions with industry officials.

According to Pecoriello, on a basket of five food items, from Coke to Lay's potato chips, the total price was $11.23 at Wal-Mart, 24 percent less than it was a year ago. It's also almost 14 percent lower than Kroger and almost 26 percent lower than Safeway, according to Pecoriello's estimates. The firm gathers pricing data representing 15,000 stores across the country.

That doesn't include Wal-Mart's move to lower cans of name-brand Coke and Pepsi further in the past few days, from the announced discounted price of $5 to as low as $3.77 in certain markets. The original price was $6.98 for a 24-pack.

Pecoriello noted in his report that Target was selling 12 packs of soda for $2, roughly matching Wal-Mart's price, while Kroger was selling 12 packs for $2.50, less than a year ago.

Some Wal-Mart stores have sold out of the cans and suppliers are having trouble keeping up, Pecoriello said. He added he hasn't seen such low prices on soda in at least five years and estimates that the overall price of soda is down about 20 percent from a year ago.

Linda Blakley, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, declined to comment on sales and said it has the lower-price 24-packs only where it faces "regional competitors."

PepsiCo declined to comment, and officials at Kroger Co., Safeway Inc., and Coca-Cola Co. didn't immediately return calls.

Though it sells all kinds of items, groceries are what keep customers coming back, and hits hard on the theme of splashy low prices in recent TV commercials. One shows a friendly associate walking down the store aisle placing the discounted items, from Heinz ketchup to Breyers ice cream. The ads put the splashy low prices, such as the $1 deal for a big, 40-ounce ketchup bottle, at center stage. The original price was $2.42.

Wal-Mart has returned to advertising some of its deals in newspapers, the first time since June 2006, according to Michael Exstein, an analyst at CreditSuisse. In addition to its store circulars, Wal-Mart advertises in newspaper inserts like Parade, which have lower costs and require a longer lead time, Exstein said.

"We are working hard to bring our customers the best prices on items they need right now; and to share the news of these price cuts aggressively," Blakley said.

The "junk" food of today will be the God's food of tomorrow....... the way that you guys are thinking is like if you were horses wearing that stuff on the eyes where they can only look forward............think what junk food is made off and what people will do to get it tomorrow.

For example.........I have about $500.00 of nick knacks from the dollar store for trading later on, remember that I come from Cuba (as if you didn't already know that) so that I know what I am talking about, listen to the Cuban with the BIG ego and do as he says :oo-->

Go to the homes front yard sales and buy all that you can and just put it away..... like our friend Agnut is doing, I told him (and you) about finding a straight nail in Cuba it was like finding a dollar bill here in the states so that he is now buying all the bucket of nails that he can get in the garare sales.

Go to the Salvation Army and get all the clothing that you can, first for you and your family and then for trading..........DO IT.

Ponce's ego is getting so big that it no longer fits in his chair hahahahahhaha, thanks guy.

I started to take an inventory of the food that I have and after ten minutes I decided to quit.......it would take me at least a week to count everything.

Will they go bad? no idea, when the time comes I'll open the can or package and if it smell bad I'll burn it.

By the way, debit cards and silver are being pushed very very hard.....I smell a rat.

Well amigo all that you have to do is to go to different sites in the news and read, watch what they say on TV and radio..........go to different places in other countries rather than just in the US and then put it altogether.

Is like those buy and trow away phones, soon you will have to show and id when you buy one, your name and phone number will be sent to the government so that they can track you...........as they do with firearms.

Banks keep on pushing the "free" debit cads...(for your convenience)..and all it does is to keep track of your money and to see if you are spending more than what you earn.........soon to come the "Debit-Credit" card where everything that you earn will come from there and everthing that you spend will come out of there.

Yeah I got some nails too a few years ago. I imagined all the stuff I might want to build in the future... and doing it without nails would be frigging torture. What else can secure two pieces of wood together in seconds with no more skill or effort than hitting something with something else?

Junk food is junk at any price. Low in vitamins and minerals and whatever else your body really needs, they're just calories. What's in coke but calories? And if you're just buying calories, why not just go all out on cheapness and buy some sugar? Potato chips? Just buy some salt and oil instead.

People are out there buying food only to satisfy their food addiction, finding the cheapest way to not feel hungry anymore. If junk food had grown on trees for the last million years I bet we'd have developed with more specific hungers, cravings for fiber or protein maybe.

You got it, and that's one reason why I never get sick..........like when I was overseas serving in the army and others, while the rest of the troops were getting sick with the water I was doing A OK.

The problem with Americans is that they are too "sanitize" and one of the reasons as to why they get sick all the time and why most drugs no longer works..... there is nothing to fight.

Feed your body what it craves for (it will let you know) and not only with what is "right".

Might be getting a little carried away here Ponce.. Not bad advice but just a little overboard. I know where your from and I understand somewhat the problems they faced and face down there. Just remember that the US is a much larger place with a lot more stuff.

I do think things are going to crash, I dont think its going to be a repeat of the great depression. I also think any crash is going to be short lived. The reason is simple. Its all about control, if there is a crash and money is worthless they have lost control. They will do anything to stay in control. I think the best example we have to look at is Argentina. devalued the currency twice and still crashed but overall still a decent place to live.

You are looking in only one direction.........I judge more the people rather than what is going to happen because the people will make it worse than what it will really going to be..................also, what does the government really wants???, can you say MARTIAL LAW and the take over of the US?.

AndreaG--A good response to the teller's lecture is "I'm following Dave Ramsey's get out of debt steps. He says use cash" (search his books, I don't like a lot of his advice, but some is good old common sense!)

The second, and my favorite response is, "I don't have any debt because when I run out of real cash I know when to stop spending it. Do you?" I've also been known to say that when they stop printing paper dollars I'll think about that debit card . . . . I'm sure they have a few choice words when I leave the bank. Best option is to just keep away from them as much as possible.

Last time I went to my bank they keep on pushing the "convinience" of having a debit card and that it was for "free".

Read elsewhere that they are thinking of charging a 5% in the near future for its use.........so, you will have to pay them for them to keep track of what you spend to report it to the government.........may as will give them a pistol and asked them to shoot me.

Most tellers are very friendly and don't push anything on me but I had one tell me I could do everything with the atm (I go to a teller for everything, even taking out cash) and she sounded like she really meant it, like "don't bother me with this petty stuff, do it yourself". So I told her I know I can do everything with the ATM but I also know that if a week goes by that there's not a lineup in this bank than there will be 1 less teller working here or at least fewer hours for people. So I deposit my checks and take out cash from the tellers even though technically I could have direct deposit and use debit for everything and only need to visit the bank a couple times a year. Everything for me is free but I understand for other accounts they charge you more service fees if you use a teller instead of the machine.

The other thing about debit cars is the retailer has to pay about 50-150 cents per transaction so that's obviously going to get factored into the price of everything and it makes it all more expensive for everyone. And when the power goes out it sucks too.

Speaking of Wal-Mart, my local one finally had Federal 550 packs of .22 back in stock after 18 mths of never seeing any. $18.97 a box now. Made me cry, but I still bought 4 more boxes and 2 boxes of WWB 9MM 100 packs. Gonna keep stacking ammo until .gov no longer allows the sale of it.

More important than stockpiling poison is to become self-sufficient or as near to it as possible.

Ponce, your "Gods food" will still be poison except in an extreme circumstance like nuclear holocaust where growing food would be impossible.

And even then it will still be poison but it will be better than nothing.

Poisonous processed foods don't change their form magically, it will always be what it is.

Ugh, I know it. 30% increase on federal bulk and a 20% increase on wwb. I did notice that CCI mini mags were still $6.50/100.

Funny story...... Last week at Jesuit Fargo, my teller was pregnant. I asked her if she was going to vaccinate her baby? She about came unglued, I thought I was going to be escorted out of the bank.

amazing how people react.

i emailed 2 of my brothers the Youtube about Desiree, the woman in Seattle who was badly hurt by a vaccination.

one brother thanked me ... didn't hear a word from the other. they both tend to be very un-questioning of authority.

i'll have to try one of those sometime thanks!!

I just like using a teller as aopposed to something else as I don't want to deal with that technology and it is one less number i have to use / remember and worry about getting stolen
