In many ways I also hate facebook. Their actions regarding privacy are barbaric.
But I did sign up last year. The reason? To connect with some long lost childhood friends. Facebook helped me succeed in doing so, and I'm very grateful for that.
Now it helps me keep in touch with family all over the world. Many of my family members are not very tech savvy, but they don't seem to have too much trouble with facebook. Even my beloved grandmother uses it.
So I won't be deleting my account. There are many people, family included, who I would likely not have any contact with again if I did.
Here's the trick: I don't put any personal info on there. My real name, a few pictures, and city location are there, but that's it. And all the privacy options are activated (yes you have to dig for them a bit, but not really, though I do agree they should be activated by default). You can get more private info on me by looking in a phone book or searching 411. And I don't care if people I know have access to a low resolution photo or two of me (only people I explicitly add as a friend can see any of my pictures).
So whatever. If a good alternative comes around I will check it out and consider switching (i.e. Diaspora). Until then I really don't care.

That's how I've done it SB. Activate all the privacy options. I can't be searched out, and nobody can see my page unless I give them permission first.

Really?
For us it comes down to two things: fair choices and best intentions. In our view, Facebook doesn't do a good job in either department. Facebook gives you choices about how to manage your data, but they aren't fair choices, and while the onus is on the individual to manage these choices, Facebook makes it damn difficult for the average user to understand or manage this. We also don't think Facebook has much respect for you or your data, especially in the context of the future.
So they are quitting because they are too dumb to use the software? or because it isnt 'fair'?
How about quitting for this reason:

Facebook has always been intrusive! I couldn't believe that they ask people for their password to their private email so that FB can send out an invitation to them! Why would you give a computer much less anyone your password? Crazy!!!!
One of my alias' does indeed have a FB account. She shows up with privacy settings so tight no one but the two family members can see anything! They know my nickname and laughed at all the fluff and crazy responses to nosey questions like favorite tv show. I guess they weren't expecting the vintage answers.
As far as searching for the real me on the net . . . Good Luck! 8)

Farmville... lol
The privacy settings really are not user friendly, at default anyone can get to everything you publicly write.
Very easy to accidentally spread your information across facebooks other applications and not even know it.
Same deal with youtube, your privacy can stop at your name but a lot of people have it all laying out there.
