A simple solution. It should work. If it doesn't then a nuke should be employed to close the bore.

1. This is just a bigger version of the top hat attempt that failed.
2. Because of the underlying surface geology, mud, and this being a high-pressure well, you can't build a containment dome big enough. The oil and gas will always work their way to the edges and start gushing out from there.
FWIW - I am not a roughneck or petroleum engineer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express before.

I disagree. I submitted a suggestion to the BP suggestion site that involved building a containment dome with hundreds of perforations in it, much like you would envision an inverted sieve. At each of the perforations, have a mechanical connection point which, one by one, can be connected to surface routed hoses. This way, when the dome is placed over the spill, differential pressure across the dome wall will not be an issue. Once the hoses are connected to the perforations, the differential can be controlled by the rate of suction being established by the surface pumps. It is a multi staged approach to controlling the differential across the wall of the dome.
I'm not an engineer, but I think a simple sollution like this could be feasable.
