BP Plc has decided not to attach a second blowout preventer on its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico and efforts to end the flow are over until the relief wells are finished, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Thad Allen, who spoke at a press conference today.

Is this AFTER they've cut off the kinked riser which was (somewhat) restricting the flow???
If so, these jokers are fucking brilliant!

Ridiculous, a large corporation like BP can't figure out how to stop the gusher with all the money and resources they have, they can't stop it? Bull !!! apparently they aren't trying hard enough.

Has anyone read any other article about this or just the one in the op? :) :conf:
To answer the previous posts:
They have stopped efforts to HALT the flow. They will now just concentrate on COLLECTING/DIVERTING the flow until the relief wells are finished.
The current activity is to attach an LMRP to the top of the BOP. To do this they will have to cut off the bent riser and DP.
Their planning had been that if the LMRP plan didn't work they would go with trying to attach another BOP to the top of the existing one.
They have decided to scratch that part of the backup plan and use that BOP for the 2nd relief well - which had been temporarily stopped but has now been restarted. I wonder if this means that there are only two BOP's available in the entire world?
The next sequence in the recovery plan was that if everything else had failed they would try cutting the existing damaged BOP off of the wellhead and attaching a new one. I would assume this step has now been scrubbed as well.
I would also assume the nuclear option is also off the table, at least until the relief wells have failed and/or the flowrate increases substantially.

Is there still a chance of the oil blowing by the pipe while waiting for them to dig this relief well?
