EOG Well in Pennsylvania Had ‘Blowout,’ State Says
June 4 (Bloomberg) -- A Pennsylvania natural-gas well operated by EOG Resources Inc. had a “blowout†last night, sending flames and drilling fluids 75 feet (23 meters) into the air, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection said.
“The event at the well site could have been a catastrophic incident that endangered life and property,†John Hanger, the department’s secretary, said today in a statement. “This was not a minor accident, but a serious incident that will be fully investigated by this agency with the appropriate and necessary actions taken quickly.â€
EOG said in a separate statement the well experienced a “control issue†at about 8 p.m. New York time yesterday and was secured by 12:15 p.m. today. No injuries were reported, the company said.
The well is located in the Marcellus Shale gas formation in Clearfield County, about 11 miles from Penfield, Pennsylvania, EOG said.
EOG, Range Resources Corp. and other natural-gas producers in the Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania and neighboring states fell in New York trading.
EOG dropped 6.1 percent to $102.99 at 4:05 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Fort Worth, Texas-based Range slid 5.3 percent to $48.30, and EQT Corp., based in Pittsburgh, tumbled 6.6 percent to $38.10.
The Federal Aviation Administration authorized a temporary airspace restriction above the well, the environmental department said.
The restriction, which is in effect until further notice, prohibits flights within a three nautical mile radius of the well site, the department said.
