as of today. it's been continually sending out 24 tones per minute, 24/7, uninterrupted, since 1982. it's rumored to be the "readiness & availability" signal of the russian dead-hand nuclear system.

today it stopped.

What's the uvb-76? A Russian nuclear system? Is it based in Russia?

no one really knows what it is. it's the real life version of the button-reset thing on "lost," i guess.

most spooks think it's a signal that relays that the russian "dead-hand" nuclear launch machine is still available and working.

it's kind of creepy if you listen to it long enough.

Just saw a thread about it on a HAM board - prevailing opinion seems to be an upgraded system may have replaced it.

There is speculation that Russian strategic forces (specifically, subs) use a binary coding system, with UVB-76 broadcasting 1/2 of the necessary code for orders.

never heard of this, but it sounds very like the woodpecker (linked to at the wiki entry, too). some kind of HAARP-type installation to affect consciousness? i don't see any mention of the frequency being broadcast from a quick look around, ELF/VLF is known to negatively impact people.

Kinda cool! First I've ever heard of this, read the entire wiki article on it! How neat!

I like a good mystery, and OLD mysteries like this are even more fun.

A little off topic:

Woodpecker aka Duga-3 aka Steel Yard was shut down in 1989, in the wake of Chernobyl. The main array remains standing in the Chernobyl dead zone.
