How liberty is eroded under the cover of providing 'safety'
Cash is one of the alleged banes of society that has long been in the sights of statist control-freaks everywhere. The debate over cash has recently received fresh input from none other than that paradise of socialism, Sweden. As reported in 'The Local', „Robberies raise prospect of retail cash ban“.
In it we learn that Sweden has something called the 'Work Environment Authority', one of the countless bureaucracies that tend to spring up in the modern-day State and then perpetuate themselves by constantly inventing new regulations.

Per the report in 'the Local':

“The head of the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) has raised the prospect of a ban on cash in Sweden's retail stores to help tackle the growing problem of robbery. The authority's director-general Mikael Sjöberg refused to rule out the drastic measure in an interview on Wednesday. "You can't rule anything out, it just depends on how risky the situation is. We have very extensive possibilities to explore," Sjöberg told trade union publication Handelsnytt. The authority is set to conduct an inspection of 3,000 small stores across Sweden to chart opportunities aimed at improving the working environment. "It is not acceptable that people go to work in fear and concerned that they could be subject to a robbery, which does actually happen in this sector," Mikael Sjöberg said. The Work Environment Authority has previously pushed through cash bans on buses in Sweden after a spate of hold-ups. Robberies against retailers accounted for 9 percent of all robbery cases reported in Sweden in 2007, according to statistics from the National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå). From just under 400 cases per annum in 1987, the number of cases had more than doubled by 2007 after a peak in 2005.“

We don't want to give them any ideas, but one might naively ask, why not forbid cars on account of the prevalence of road accidents? A poster named Molly on the EeeUser-forum has put together a number of arguments forwarded by Swedish politicians and bureaucrats in the past in support of banning cash.
While we could not independently verify this list of statements, it certainly rings true, and in part mimics the spurious arguments heard elsewhere before (Molly's own comments in italics):

I haven't read the list mentioned above about cash ban statements from Swedish officials, but I can confirm that this has been discussed for ages in Sweden. I think it is quite likely that Sweden will be the worlds first cash-less society, and then big brother will have complete control.

Same here Dy.........usually is the UK and then the US.

One more time........."Some day we will all have a Devit-Credit Card where all that you earn will go in there and all that you spend will come out of there"......and for your "Convenience" all taxes will come out of there, you won't even have to worry about it.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have." - Gerald Ford

Statism in the pursuit of welfare, warfare, security, etc. always enables a power-hungry government to potentially become tyrannical.

When will people learn?

It's the same story everywhere. Morons who believe money has value and are prepared to kill for it and no one with a gun to protect themselves from the morons. Now everyone is scared of morons.

In other news. Sydney Australia. 2 morons killed an armed security guard Monday morning during a early morning cash run. The robbers escaped empty handed.

I'm sure there are a few good guys left in Sweden. Now they'll have no choice but to use gold and silver!

Ban retail cash? I wonder how many home invasion robberies will result from that - assuming you will still be able to deposit their (remaining/savings) cash at banks. They'll have to go all in or nothing on this. Welcome to the NWO, where what you buy, sell and do is determined by the state.

I'm not religious but this is getting very interesting. I wonder if you'll need the mark of the beast to get food and fuel in the future.

No doubt they have a large proportion of the Swedish population that doesn't buy anything apart from with a card or even with a mobile phone, and they pay all their bills using Internet banking services, but they will get a substantial underground industry of cash payment if they try to impose a ban on cash transactions, and if they ban cash all out, people will start bartering w/o cash.

Like I said before........."They will not ban cash but every dollar that you use at the store the merchant will turn it in to the bank where it will go into the Twilight Zone........and then one day you will be out of cash and will have to use PM, bartering or the infamous debit-credit card".

I keep wondering about the fate of coins.......I hold a lot of them.

I like coins too, they seem to have a higher long term value than the printed papers do...

As I see it......that chip later on will be doing a hell more than what they are saying, for example......it will stop you from getting drunk, it will stop you from eating to much...........and later on?........it will stop you from committing a crime or allowing a crime to be committed........bad thoughts will trigger the chip.
